The mudslinging has already started for the 2006 midterms. Vernon Robinson is attacking Congressman Brad Miller's sexuality even though Miller has been married to the same woman for 25 years.
Politicians who have nothing to offer and nothing solid to run on resort to mudslinging, nasty attacks and outright slander to get attention. Remember in 2004 how the Swift Boat Veterans maliciously attacked John Kerry, a man who volunteered for service in Vietnam and won two Purple Hearts, while George W. Bush's service record is still in question.
In 2000, Bush called John McCain unpatriotic, and literature distributed in his name suggested that McCain has an illegitimate African American daughter. McCain spent five years as a prisoner of war in the infamous Hanoi Hilton. His daughter was adopted from Bangladesh.
Bush also helped unseat Max Cleland, another Vietnam vet who left both legs and an arm in the jungle, calling him unpatriotic. One may have problems with McCain or Cleland on various issues, but their patriotism is beyond question.
The Bush campaign ran on mud and is now drowning in it.
Let's hope the Robinson campaign does not succeed in rousing the darkest in American hearts and chokes on its own dirt.

John Kerry served in Vietnam?
Nice tactic Jo. Bring up Vernon Robinson in the '06 election as an intro to the real intent of the letter, a Bush basher. You guys are creative.

Robinson has left the plantation behind and is not bowing at the feet of Calypso Louie and Jessee Jackson. This is what the liberals fear most, imo. Nothing worse than a black politican that doesn't toe the line.
He's got my vote.

I found the letter to make some very valid points. It took a real spinmaster to make Kerry, McCain and Cleland look "unpatriotic" and Bush a hero.
I think that those protesting and questioning the war in Vietnam and Iraq are the patriots. They love their country and see what war does to the country we are attacking and to our country.
We see now that when the support goes down, non-issues are raised, ie amendment to ban gay marriage.
It breaks my heart to see the hatred many display for others. May God lead us all to a better way of life.

Neither Robinson or his office will contact constituents when same make contact. I know first hand! That tells me something about what kind of person and politician he really is; a professional one.
Remember, he is the one that has sought to force religion in Winston-Salem political life! Remember, he had a granite monument of the 10 Commandments placed at, I believe, City Hall in WS.
Be wary, very wary!

GASP! A statue of the 10 commandments at City Hall! What a travesty! What is the world coming to? What's next? Pledging Allegiance to the flag in schools? What are these people thinking?
Talk about non-issues.
Here's my take. I agree with the letter writer that much of the campaign rhetoric is just that. It gets vicious. And it's a real turn-off to me, but it seems to work with some voters. But let's not be so blind as this letter-writer who only mentions the political mud-slinging from one side of the aisle. It goes both ways and to imply otherwise is just silly. She turns a very valid complaint into a partisan gripe. Which is unfortunate.
IMO, Both Clinton and Bush found ways to avoid Vietnam. Personally, I judge neither. Most of what I've heard about Kerry hasn't attacked his service as much as attacked what he said after he came back.
I would much rather see campaigns on issues instead of personal lives.

Yvonne, I'm not blonde but my wife is. You aren't insinuating that blondes are stupid are you? That's not PC.
Yellow brings up a good point, this letter is so slanted to one side it makes the Leaning Tower of Pisa appear upright.
Anyone remember the 2000 campaign? Remember James Byrd, the black man who was horribly dragged to his death behind a truck by some white supremacists in Texas. Anyone remember the ad linking this murder to George Bush? Remember the ad saying if Bush were elected prez then more deaths like this would occur? By the way these guys rightfully received the death sentence.
Remember the ad that said black churches would burn? Remember the Moveon ad that compared Bush to Hitler in '04?
Politcal campaigns are always nasty these days, on both sides. To say it's only on the side of Republicans is dishonest.

You have to love our community of Vernon Robinson loving Republicans. Lest we forget, neoCON has bellied up to the Robinson bar of hate and given Vernon a big thumbs up! But others have not:
In one North Carolina congressional district, for instance, Republican challenger Vernon Robinson has aired a radio ad attacking Democratic Representative Brad Miller with mariachi music playing in the background: ``Brad Miller supports gay marriage and sponsored a bill to let American homosexuals bring their foreign homosexual lovers to this county on a marriage visa. If Miller had his way, America would be nothing but one big fiesta for illegal aliens and homosexuals." Miller voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2004, saying the matter should be left to the states.

And if the Senate's time wasn't enough, now the House is taking up lame legislation to try and jumpstart ratings that have been in the basement.
Howard Coble, an unmarried, member of Congress is all over this one. You can't make this stuff up! Why isn't Vernon Robinson playing mariachi music for Howard? Because he's a Republican!
One of my favorite posts:
We’re in the middle of a disintegrating war in Iraq. Oil prices just hit 73 dollars per gallon on news that Iran plans to halt fuel production if there are sanctions by the United States due to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Global warming is accelerating, and so are the winds of the hurricanes lashing at our coasts. Our government is going bankrupt.
So, with all these real problems going on, the United States Senate is shutting down its ordinary schedule of business in order to spend weeks considering two frivolous amendments to the United States Constitution.
1. Making desecration of the American flag a crime, though nobody can seem to remember the last time that anybody actually saw somebody else desecrating a flag.
2. Reducing the number of people who get married by creating an underclass in America that does not have equal access marriage rights.
Polls show clearly that, outside Washington D.C., only a tiny right wing fringe element has much interest at all in promoting these amendments. Yet, the Republican Party is held captive to the most radical ideological agenda from the Religious Right, out of touch with mainstream America, which cares more about getting the business of the nation done with.
Voters, Democrat and Republican alike, see these amendments for the desperate and crass attempt to distract us from the real issues of the day. The leaders of the Senate ought to be ashamed of themselves for filling up the schedule with this bitter fluff.
Note: It may only be a small right wing fringe group in the context of America, but on this blog, it is a trifecta if ignorance!

Correction: last sentence in my last post should have read "OF ignorance" not if ignorance.

Last words taken from Republican Blog:
Meanwhile, perhaps President George Bush needs a reminder.
It seems he originally ran to be the President of the United States of America.
But he increasingly governs as if he wants to be the President of the Disunited States of America.

I still think our leaders want a dis-United States. If we were united, they couldn't get by with the wasted money, unwarranted war, out of control debt, etc. They have us where they want us, ignorant and fighting among ourselves.

Dan,
No, I was not implying blonde's are dumb. Had I thought that, that is what I would have said. However, I'm not sure you will appreciate my explanation any better.
I was blonde myself, before the gray-haired fairy beat my hair into a gray pulp. People say a lot of things about me but dumb is not one of them. Opinionated, outspoken, principled, compassionate, giving, strange, not normal, liberal, wise, understanding and fair are a few.
As a younger blonde, I was quite gullible. It is my observation the youth/blonde combination creates an amazing propensity for gullibility. This is one reason people view blondes as dumb when, in fact, they are just plain gullible.
It is my opinion you share this trait with blondes sometimes.

Yvonne, I thought you asked if I was blonde due to my question "John Kerry served in Vietnam"?
That was a joke. Kerry mentioned in every other breath that he served in Vietnam.
I doubt you listen to Rush, but most times he mentions Kerry he says "John Kerry, who by the way served in Vietnam, ........."

neoCON,
How do you reconcile Jesus's teachings with Vernon Robinson's rhetoric?

June 9, 2006 6:38 PM
Demented Deacon, how do you liberals reconcile Jesus' teachings with the rhetoric from the left, yet ignore them when it suits your agenda? For instance - 'love thy neighbor' becomes 'support the welfare state'. But you turn a deaf ear to 'thou shalt not kill' when discussing a woman's right to 'choose'. This is the defination of hypocricy.

June 10, 2006 9:46 AM
Demented Deacon, I don't reconcile what is said by politicans with Jesus' teachings. I am not a particularly religious person.
I answered your question. Answer mine. Why do hypocrites on the left bring up Jesus' teachings to support their love of the welfare state and turn a blind eye to the murder of the most defenseless among us, the unborn?
