Coulter fashions her opinions from lies

The following is a Counterpoint
By Christopher C. Tew

Michael Crouch's review (Ideas, Aug. 13) of Anne Coulter's latest assault on truth, justice and the American way proclaims that anyone uncovering her lies and absurdities is a charlatan. So as not to disappoint, I offer such comments as this space allows.

Coulter accuses liberals of stifling open discussion of controversial topics in public schools and the body politic. Parson Weems' controversial version(s) of Washington's life is seldom discussed, nor are the ''Protocols of the Elders of Zion'' or the accounts of holocaust deniers - without liberal stifling. Few people object, because competent historians know these historical oddities are based on inaccurate information, intentional fabrications and crude distortions. They are lies.

Similarly, American public schools shouldn't teach ''scientific creationism'' or ''intelligent design'' in science classes because competent scientists know those are based on inaccurate information, intentional fabrications and crude distortions. They are lies, even when pimped by an occasional Ph.D.

Evolution, in contrast, has been honed by constant testing according to the scientific method and is supported by 99-plus percent of scientists active in biological and earth sciences.

Coulter dredges up old, shopworn creationist lies that never held water. Behe, whom she cites, never did any laboratory research on blood-clotting cascades or bacterial flagella.

His assertions about ''intelligently designed'' systems were shown wrong long ago, though he still argues them past the point of intellectual integrity. Behe made literature searches that were incompetently designed or intentionally designed so as to avoid inconvenient results. Behe admits that 10 years on, he hasn't done the experiments that he knows would disprove ''intelligent design.''

Darwin wrote a thought experiment about the evolution of complex eyes from light-sensitive cells. Modern scientists have confirmed the essential accuracy of Darwin's proposal through examples from living organisms. Other research has shown each step requires few genetic changes. Genetic research has discovered the crucial gene all eyed organisms inherited from an ancient common ancestor. Coulter dissembles about this entire topic.

Far from being a careful researcher, Coulter uncritically apes dishonest and unreliable sources. Her meager credibility depends on willingly and willfully ignorant people preferring her agreeable lies to sometimes uncomfortable truths.

The writer lives in Greensboro.

My eldest daughter is tall, thin, blond and very opinionated. There are times when she reminds me of Ann Coulter.

I don't know whether to plan on putting her through law school, or into psychological counseling.

Coulter is blunt, stubborn, arrogant, condescending, and intentionally inciteful.

Although there are times I'd like to strangle her I love reading her columns and have read all her books.

I see her as the additive inverse to Leonard Pitts, both so self assured in their opinions as to be at times nerve wracking, but both still worth reading.

Nobody's wrong ALL the time. Theoretically at least.

And in her meek little "nuclear weapon in a zoning dispute" manner, Coulter often makes some excellent points.

My daily routine involves the perusal of quite a few commentary websites, including everything from Jewish World Review to Al Jazeera.

Now, thanks to Mr. Christopher C. Tew I can free up a couple of hours in my morning schedule. Inasmuch as he is the final arbiter of truth I can quit wasting time reading any diversity of opinion and simply wait for his divinely inspired missives

God Bless you Mr. Tew for allowing me a glimpse into your infinite wisdom. Providing of course that there is a God.

Please let me know soon.

Let me guess, Tew is aliberal. So anything said by a concservative is lies, distorions and falsehoods. Guess what, Darwin's theory is just that, a theory, scientist have latched on to his theory an ran with it. There is NO 100% proof that Darwin's theory is accurate. Scientist change the mind on things all the time. There are some scientists that believe in the theory of creation, but because it conflicts with the theory of evolution, it and they are dismissed as unscientific.

Twenty years ago, the same scientist that are crying global warming were saying there was going to be a minnie global ice age. They are just guessing with the information and science we have at the time. Theories are changed and dismiss all the time. As better ways are found, theories change.

For one to say that creation is wrong, is just as closed mind as those as those who thought that the earth was flat.

"Coulter accuses liberals of stifling open discussion of controversial topics in public schools and the body politic."

My take on Coulter's observation:

Liberal response to Swiftboat vets against John Kerry: "How dare you attack a man who won 2 purple hearts" (Nevermind the issue at hand)

Liberal response to criticism of Sen. Max Cleland: "How dare you attack a man who lost two legs in vietnam while serving his country"(Nevermind the issue at hand)

Liberal response to critisism of Cindy Sheehan: "how dare you attack a grieving mother who lost her son in a war" (Nevermind the issue at hand)

Liberal respons to criticism of a 1/2 dozen 9/11 widows who somehow become political celebrities overnight: "how dare you claim these women are gaining fame because of their dead hubands"

Coulter was pointing out that it's been a liberal tactic to trot out victims as issue spokespersons and then belittle any critics for "attacking" a victim.

JH:

I agree that there are some gems of wisdom in Ann's Rants, as there are in Sean's, Hannity's, and Billy's. The problem is one has to wade through the crap to find them, and most are too lazy or worse to do so .. and the Rants get taken as closs to reality.

You want some proof? See Bobby's follow-up post.

Mr. Cole: FYI (that means "For Your Information"): it is now the 21st century, and guess what. The theory of gravity is just that, a theory, scientists have also latched on to this theory and run with it.

JDR
Sorry that won't wash. Scientist are human, they make mistakes and are subject to restrictions of the technicality at hand. If you are saying that they know every theory they have is 100% right, I think you are full of crap. I'm sorry, but I have always gotting better that that from you. I guess I expected to much.

Gravity is the theory that explains my overbearing attraction to green eyed brunettes, so in that regard it's one I can live with.

Unless of course I ever start to fall off a cliff, in which case I'd be overjoyed to see it disproven.

I agree James that the perception of Coulter's - or any other columnist's - written works is not often accepted for it's proper value. People tend to accept as accurate those "facts" which are stated within the framework of their preconceived notions and dispute those which are not. Generally speaking we seldom apply an equal burden of proof across the board.

As I feel you would agree, that is one of the major handicaps to rational discussion of most issues addressed in public forums such as this.

WOW!

If Coulter upsets them THIS MUCH, I've got to get that book!

Liberal love "freedom of speech" just as long as they talk, and you shut up and listen.

Regards,
Marty

JDR,
Maybe Bobby can jump off of a ten story building just to check the "THEORY" of gravity-----who knows, those scientists are only human?
**********************

Ann Coulter might be good "eye candy" but she is such an unappealing person in a broader sense. I agree with others here who have said that you have to wade through the crap to find any pearls.

By the way Hugh, John Kerry received more than the purple hearts---maybe they should "swift boat" John McCain.....that prison life in North Vietnam couldn't have been too bad....heck they called it the "Hanoi Hilton" and he looks okay today??? Do you even see how ridiculous that is?

Bottom line: Why should Ann Coulter even be spoken of in a positive light after being exposed as a "plagirist"!

" Do you even see how ridiculous that is?"

I took that as you projecting about your own comments.

Bottom line: Why should Sen. Joe Biden even be spoken of in a positive light after being exposed as a "plagirist"!

Marty,
Where does anyone say they are against freedom of speech here? NOWHERE! Seems you are just upset that those darned "lie-bruhls" are exposing another "lying liar and the lies that they tell". LOL

Hugh,
I'm not defending Biden, but he admitted to it years ago and Coulter is in denial. One way she could make her current scandal go away is to admit she took what did not belong to her---contrition is good for the sould.
How's old Vernon Robinson working out for you?

Ann Coulter is actually the best advertising for liberalism there is. All the slogans conservatives come up with to sell their brand --"kinder, gentler" and "compassionate conservatism" -- are revealed as blatantly false advertising whenever she is allowed to be a spokesperson for the movement. She is just plain mean. And, by the way, I would have been kicked out of my college immediately if I had resorted to the lazy plagiarism exposed in her recent writing.

I keep hearing people admit, but yet forgive, her cruel excesses -- like one would excuse the ramblings of a crotchety old relative -- because she says something coherent every once in a while. I'm sure the same could be said of just about any representative of any evil there has ever been.

So, far-right conservatives can keep applauding her and keep speaking of her brilliance (which I have yet to witness), but after a short while her act amounts to little more than David Duke in drag. If she represents where conservatives wish to take the country and the world, then I can take comfort in the fact that more than likely the electorate will eventually reject such a mean-spirited course. And if not, all I can say is God help us.

Bobby: Here's what the "Intelligent Design" and other contempory relegious based faux-sciences reminds me of:

“…in the twelfth century Muslim orthodoxy reawakened, spearheaded by the cleric Imam al-Ghazali. Al-Ghazali championed revelation over reason, predestination over free will. He refuted the possibility of relating cause to effect, teaching that man cannot know or predict what will happen; God alone can. He damned mathematics as against Islam, an intoxicant of the mind that weakened faith.

Islam choked in the vice like grip of orthodoxy. No longer, as during the reign of the dynamic caliph al-Mamun and the great Haroon al-Rashid, would Muslim, Christian, and Jewish scholars gather and work together in the royal courts. It was the end of tolerance, intellect, and science in the Muslim world. The last great Muslim thinker, Abd-al Rahman ibn Khaldun, belonged to the fourteenth century.”

Hugh
you shouldn't be using DD's words against him, you'll hurt his feeling. Thats all he has, feeling, not facts. Kerry caused his own Swift Boat" problems by his own actions. You just will be an youthful idiot to his cause. Kerry told the truth and everyone else lied, Give me a break.

Hugh hang in and keep up the good fight, we have a long way to go.

The NYT wrote the book on plagiristism, and it is still the liberal bible.

How is this significant? At one time, Muslims from the Middle East were the leading scholars. They gave us decimal systems including the numbers zero through nine. That one thing changed the world.

It was a Muslims Mathmetician from the Middle East that figured out that we see things not because light emits from them, as the Ancient Greeks had taught, but that light bounces off of them. That leads to an understanding of perspective, which can be seen in the dramatic change from Dark-Age Art to Art created during the Renaissance. Hello Light. Any Art history majors in here? That one thing changed the world again, and for those who care (which may be only me) is also the key concept in the Theory of Relativity.

Because Islam allows the image of shapes but not of annimate objects, they packed their bags and headed back to the Holy Lands.

DD, it nice to see VR is so heavy on your mind.
JDR, you use one religion to try to prove your point, and you pick the most venomous one to boot. I am a christian, therefore the creation theory is my belief. Until you can go back in time to when mankind was introduced, you and no one else can say how it began. That is a fact, not a theory.

You on the left have as your truth detectors, Moveon.org, Micheal Moore, Cindy Sheehan, etc.
So grade them for us on their truthfulness. I'll take Ann anyday to yours.

How about this (condensed version):

Galileo "perfects" the ground glass telescope and discovers the moons circling Jupiter. the Pope doesn't like it and Galileo spends his last decade or so isolated from society. Others see this action by Catholic church and take there studies to the Protestant North. The Catholic Base is left behind.

All true by the way, no Ann Coulter Spin here.

Bobby:

You have never and will never hear me quote Moveon.org or Cindy Sheehan, so cut the crap.

After Farenheit 911 I did some research on Michael Moore's claims - and found them accurate. Spun sure, but not BS. Aside from that statement, which I've made in here previously, you have never and will never hear me quote him, so cut the crap.

I've never read Coulter, but have heard Rush and Hannity on numerous occassions, O'Really more rarely. I have in here pointed out several incidents where they have proved to be deliberately lying bastards. As with Coulter, they have legit' points, but they are so full of BS, the worthwhile ideas get lost.

Over

Instead of trying to convince me that carbon dating actually works, why not spend some energy and find a cure to the common cold. Or alzheimers, cancer, diabetes, AIDS, or the vast other ailments we suffer from.

Science is a useful tool but only if it is used for something useful.

Quite frankly, I don't care if the world is 6000 years old or 6 million. I think it is quite possible that carbon-dating could be completely inaccurate after a few thousand years. Perhaps a breakdown of some sort that we can't understand. Without any recorded history from a million years ago, I choose to put my faith somewhere besides what some human being thinks, including Ann Coulter.

Okay, I've got to admit it.

You guys have me laughing my wrinkled rectum off here.

The use of mean spirited comments to accuse someone of being mean spirited is tantamount to shooting yourself in the foot while unholstering your sidearm.

As I said earlier, I enjoy Coulter's columns and books, but that doesn't mean I always take her seriously. I could in all honesty say the same thing about Molly Ivans.

Trust me on this, there is no shortage of cruel excess in the rhetoric coming from both the farther edges of the main political idealogies in this country.

"David Duke in drag"? I love it, nothing "mean spirited" about that, it's simply an accurate assessment or her physical existence portrayed in an honest and open manner and is representative of the highest level of intelectual discourse.

I can't pretend to emulate the abilities of my recently retired secretary, but here's my best shot at her style of criticizing someone whom she thought of the way you apparently do Coulter:

Ann's history as a commentator represents one of the best modern examples of the never ending American Dream, a dream which allows anyone, even those of microscopically immeasurable ability, to reap fame and fortune if possessed of a sturdy work ethic and legs that seem to go on forever. Her testosterone based femininity, radiant barbed wire compassion, myopically huge openmindedness and absolutely paralytic ability to render fair analysis on any given topic are only surpassed by her unequaled adroitness in the use of statements previously written by others that are later tenderly converted into those of her own. With a face of such beauty that it is less often compared to Helen of Troy than to that of Helena Montana, and a talent rarely seen since the death of Attila, Ann is and will continue to be a needed voice speaking out for the unneeded, unwanted and obnoxious among us."

There, nothing "mean spirited" about that.

Off to RDU, ya'll have a GREAT weekend.

P.S. The kids are going with me to meet a prospective buyer for my business. Rather than being "wined and dined" I fully expect to be "shopped and dropped." Gotta' love it.

Speaking of the wonders of science, it was reported yesterday that I was taught wrong throughout my entire education.

See, I was taught by countless science teachers that Pluto was a planet.

Apparently, it isn't.

Of course, calling Pluto a planet or mini-planetoid doesn't really change a whole lot in the scheme of things, does it?

I guess the kids will be happy in that they only have to memorize 8 planets now.

If I had my vote, I would have got rid of Uranus for the name alone.

imho, Nitpicker - understanding as much science I can, learning where it came from and why it was important, and knowing what marvels it has led to and what the near term potentials are out there, is far more interesting than anything Ann Coulter - or myself (lol) - could ever say.

James,

I must admit I barely even know who Ann Coulter is. I've never heard her or read anything she has written. I think I have seen a picture of her once. I guess that is one of the benefits of only subscribing to basic cable.

As far as science goes, I'm astounded by the things in my daily life. I'm still stooped on how my television and microwave actually work. Or even how I can record sound and vision on a magnetic strip through a VCR. Don't even get me started on DVD's.

Although science is fascinating to me, I don't have the patience and mindset for the details involved. I've always been an English and Math student.

I appreciate science and what it has to offer. I can even appreciate the theory of evolution. However, I don't believe science has disproven the existence of God (as some like to suggest). In fact, the complexities of nature have only strengthened my belief in a higher power.

Nit, quick and dirty microwave lesson. Everything in nature has resonant frequency at which it will vibrate. If that frequency is duplicated and directed at an object, the object will start to vibrate. Example, two tuning forks of the same key, start one and place it next to the 2nd and the 2nd will start to vibrate as well.

The Microwave oven simply creates a radio wave of the frequency at which a water molecule vibrates. The vibration of the water molecules in the food creates heat which does the cooking.

"The use of mean spirited comments to accuse someone of being mean spirited is tantamount to shooting yourself in the foot while unholstering your sidearm."

But that should mean I have 5 shots left.

After the lengthy debates here about the Israel/Lebanon conflict, I thought it had been established that it is fair to shoot back in self defense. Ms. Coulter is the one who is playing initial aggressor here. She is the bully who picks on people, some rather innocent. It is not hypocritical for a peaceful man to fight back when attacked.

I saw Coulter on TV where she saw fit to label my side of the political spectrum as "Godless" (an insult I take personally), and she claimed Democratic politicians who went to church only did so for votes. She offered no qualified positions on those statements. She then proceeded to dispense additional vicious insults without any filter whatsoever.

So yeah, she is fair game. I, just like many of you good conservatives here, was taught not to cower from bullies. And I won't. Not in here either.

Jan, you can coat it in all the sugar you like, and pretend you engage only in high minded discourse, but your reply to my comments was condescending and patronizing, and thus, "mean spirited" as well. I can see the blood dripping from your boot too.

And by the way, my David Duke in drag characterization makes a valid political point. Like David Duke, Coulter's antics may very well create a black eye for the Republicans in some swing voters' minds. If it's considered an insult to her, well, that's just icing -- because like I said, she deserves it because she started it.

Scott_Free:

From the one photo I've seen of Coulter, I must say she's much better looking than David Duke would be in drag. Just goes to show that if you are pretty enough, you can say any dang thing you want.

Agreed, Nitpicker.

I meant my analogy in political terms, not physical appearance terms. I fully own up to the vitriol I was pouring out about Ann Coulter's ideas, but I regret the physical appearance connotation. I do not believe in belittling ANYONE's appearance. I apologize to Ann Coulter and her fans for that.

Settle down, Scott.

You know good and well that both sides of the fence play dirty. It's certainly not right, but they do.

You were so offended when Coulter called your side Godless, huh? If you think so low of her opinion, why do really care?

Do you get equally offended everytime someone characterizes Bush as a Nazi? Or is that OK? What about a chimp? I've seen and heard that one before too?

Look, step back from your righteous indignation for just a second and look at the issue clearly. If Coulter is such a buffoon, why even worry about her? Many people feel that Michael Moore is an equally large a buffoon, so that goes for him to. Let them make their little movies, write their little articles and do their thing. Neither have ever done jack for me.

What sort of connection does Coulter have on your life? I'm guessing none. Then don't bother with her, my friend. She doesn't know squat about you, or your beliefs, so look at her Godless comment as ignorant ramblings and don't take it personally. When certain persons on this blog post hateful, ignorant and baseless attacks, I always just consider the source and laugh at the foolishness, rather than getting upset like they want you to get.

In fact, if you really think that she is the best advertisment for liberalism out there, why don't you want her spouting off more?

janherman,
I too, am laughing my wrinkled rectum off at Bobby's posts---surely he can't be serious????! Noah's Ark is out off of HWY 421 near Sanford....wait, that's a Christian book store! Sorry!

Guess those vestiges of toes on horses, dogs, cats, etc are not evolutionary after all....they're just spare parts! LOL!

Nitpicker & JDR,

Bobby is probably marveling at his

Thermos jug----It keeps hot things hot, and cold

things cold....he's probably thinking,

"But how does it know?"

Scott, Regarding the Coulter book, you're the first liberal I've heard who was offended at being called Godless. Everyone else including those in print and media have been screaming about Coulter and the 9/11 widows instead.

You are a rare find.

I've read this book and on a scale of 1-10 I give it a 12. I highly recommend it.

It's easy to see why the liberals are so upset with Coulter: She speaks the truth about Darwin's THEORY of evolution and also explains why liberals are so entranced with it...it demands no standard of behavior since we are all just a product of a worm that has 'evolved' over the past few million years. The theory of evolution is the perfect religion for those whose morals are out of the mainstream - and the counter-culturists.

She also addresses the inept public education system we have here in the US and this will certainly win her no accolades from the liberals as this is their indoctrination system that I have been speaking of for 30 years now.

How many conservatives are launching pies at Michael Moore?

http://www.anncoulter.com/cgi-local/article.cgi?article=50

Ahhhh, typical of rabid liberals who can't even aim straight, well typical of the DNC, rabid liberals who can't even aim straight.

BTW, if a conservative DID launch a pie at Michael Moore, he would catch it in his mouth and swallow it with one gulp, tin included.

DemonDecon writes:

Which just goes to show you that he is in complete denial about the radical left (i.e. "democrats") shouting down conservative speakers on college campuses, throwing pies in their faces, blocking Condeleza Rice from speaking, and calling anything on the radio except AirAmerica and NPR "hate radio."

Sure... they are ALL FOR freedom of speech for Ward Churcill, Hugo Chavez, or any random terrorist prisoner at Guantanamo..... but they mount campaigns to prevent people like Coulter, Sowell, Rice or Horowitz from speaking.

DemonDeacon... this is PRECISELY what I was referring to when I said it was a oneway street for them. If you don't see this, then you must remove your blinders first.

Freedom of Speech implies freedom for all. Not just for the rabid radical left.

Marty

Try this link. Interesting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84EjWeTMBZs

Carol: She is like many - here and elsewhere: no concern for the basis of claims - make 'em and the sheep will follow.

Neo: If Carol's link shows Ann's grasp (hey, maybe it's doctored .. I'd sure like to see her "truth" about Darwin's THEORY of evolution. Gotta link? 'cause I'm not gonna wade through her book without advance sexual favors from her (maybe she's good for something - key word Maybe).

ALSO - and fyi, Evolution makes no claim that we are a product of worms 'evolved' over the past few million years. If she believes that, it is proof the video was not doctored.

Hello World - If you believe that Evolution is about man evolving from worms over the past few million years .. then no wonder you do not believe it. YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT ... and trust me on this one, Ann Coulter is the last place to start looking.

cRock-o-feller, I didn't read the book to 'research' Darwin. That was required research when I was a captive member of the public indoctrination system and had no choice in the matter. A dissenting voice there would guarantee a "F" and most likely an extended stay in the center's library until you 'got your mind right'.

Coulter makes good points in the book about the morals of those who have embraced Darwin and his THEORY of evolution.
For example: Hitler and Karl Marx were devout evolutionists and justified their actions as 'the survival of the fittest'. Ditto Mussolini. (No higher authority to answer to)

As for the "sheep" theory, the same can be said about liberals and their citing of NPR, CNN, and about 99% of the other 'information' outlets in this country as the source of their information. (If it's on the "Diane Rehm" show it IS the unbiased truth). What a crock. Yet, she has her sheep trailing along behind gobbling up every bit of info to be relayed to the masses who inhibit this blog as "proof" of some liberal point.

Have you ever listened to Diane, neo? She NEVER presents only one side of an issue. She always has guests who represent both sides. She asks great questions. She doesn't yell, scream, call names, or use sarcasm. She is calm and rational. So now, you just leave Diane alone. She rules.

Point made

One more time: Have you ever listened to the show? Yes or no. If yes, please offer examples of "liberal bias". If not, you know not of what you speak.

Carol,
Give up on neoCON. This is not a nice thing to say, but he gives us all the proof we need:

NEOCON IS A TOTAL IDIOT!

As the late night host Tom Snyder would say, "There I said it. Now get outta here"
