Dudley parents need to be accountable, too

I just read the article, "Graduation rate dives at Dudley," (Dec. 7). Hmm. Does anyone actually have to think this through? Why are we blaming the schools for everything? When are we going to hold the parents and students responsible for themselves?

I am a parent of a high school senior. She knows the rules at home, she knows the rules at school and she knows she is responsible for her own actions.

My job as a parent is to encourage her to do her best and when the going gets rough, suck it up and keep going, but I'll be there right beside her for strength.

My daughter knows the importance of an education and graduating. I've instilled those values in her. The parents and students at Dudley need to get involved to save their future.

I couldn't agree more.

Mr. Froning,
Is there a reason you didn't mention where you send your daughter to high school? Did it make you feel bigger and better to speak these words to the parents at Dudley? Do you feel superior now, for your admonishment to them?

*************
I am sure some poor soul will say that it wouldn't matter to them if it were Greensboro Day or Bishop McGuiness, they'd still feel the same way. Yeah, right. Well clean up your own backyard first. Or better yet, try to help others in a postive way rather than agreeing with Mr. Froning's hubris.

The article she was addressing was about Graduation rates at Dudley. That may be the reason she addressed parents and students at Dudley. I think the advice applies to all.

Those who always seek the worst in people are seldom disappointed.

If the students and parents are held accountable, then there is no outside entity to blame for failure/s. Therefore, it is the fault of; 1) teachers, 2) school administration, and 3) district administration when the STUDENT fails!

It is amazing at how students are taught to take responsibility for their actions, yet they receive a subtle message from school administrations that it is the fault of the above referenced entities when said student fails.

The sole solution is to hold ALL people accountable, regardless of what school one attends.

Shalom

I don't see it as everyone's responsibility when student's fail. Or necessarily the school boards or the teachers.

The school board, teachers and administrators will provide a certain level of education at Dudley. This educational opportunity is available to each and every student that graces the walls of that school.

I believe that the faculty at Dudley is AT LEAST as good as at any other high school in the state. In the course of my life, I have had more than a little contact with various personnel at dudley and, to a person, find them intelligent, dedicated and caring. To all of their students.

This education that is offered, however, can either be accepted or rejected. When students reject educational opportunities and offers of assistance from educators, they are to blame. No one else.

If I get fired due to poor performance or shoddy attendance, I am the one at fault, not my boss for failing to come up with innovative and creative ways to structure my job around my desires as an employee. School teaches students more than just what appears in textbooks. School is also a way to learn life coping skills. A way to understand the degree of conformity, uniformity and socilization that will be required to survive in the work force.

If kids don't attend school regularly, don't listen in class, don't do assignments, and disrupt others....they will fail. I will bet my bottom dollar that those who fail fall into this description...not rocket science, just common sense and 25 years of teaching experience. You decide whose "fault" this is.

Great comments Carol.

The problem we have as a community is the DD's of this world. They are driving the public Education system down the toilet.
