Here's a brief account pertinent to the article "Mergers may hurt travelers at PTI" (Dec. 14).
Last week I traveled to Baton Rouge. Had I flown from PTI, the ticket price would have topped $350. Instead, I drove to Raleigh (1 hour) and flew to New Orleans, rented a car and drove to Baton Rouge (1 hour from New Orleans). The plane ticket was less than $200 and the car rental was about $50 for two days. So, I saved about $100 at the cost of two hours of driving and a minor amount of fuel.
Not only that, but the airport experience in Raleigh is better than at PTI: better traffic patterns, better parking (thought $4 more per day), better food, and so on. Now I've flown from all three airports in this region. Raleigh is the hands-down winner.
The problem for travelers from PTI stems not only from airline mergers and other shenanigans, but from PTI's general operations.

Does PTI set the fares for flights flying from their airport? I'm sure there costs are a component but it may be that the airline shoulders some of the responsibility.
The car rental rate seems low. I've usually paid quite a bit more than $50 to rent a car for 2 days.
I guess it comes down to how much you value your time and just how rushed your schedule is. Faced with a drive to the Raleigh airport (more than an hour for me) and another drive after arrival, I might very well be willing to cough up the extra money.

BTW,
If you live in Climax, a drive to Raleigh Durham would take, on average, about an hour and a half. Unless, of course, you were going 90 miles an hour the whole way and never ran into a traffic jam. And, of course, we know there are never any traffic jams on I-40 near the Raleigh airport.
Just nitpickin again.

I don't think you're picking nits, Nitpicker. It's 70-plus miles to Raleigh for me, and, having driven from New Orleans to Baton Route, I know that's 80-plus miles one-way.
Gottsegan has a point. Prices are slightly higher, but he puts a pretty low value on his time if he's willing to put in 300-plus miles of driving to save $150.
All the same, I guess I'm proving his point, because I just made reservations yesterday to fly Southwest out of Raleigh, not so much for the money savings, but to get much more convenient flight times (10:30 a.m. versus 6 a.m) to Las Vegas next month.

Parking is easier at RDU compared to PTI? That's a hoot.
Last time I flew out of RDU I had to remember which color/letter coordinated LT parkplace my car was in, upon my return I forgot and took me two different bus rides to locate it. At PTI, just a few steps and you're at your car.
Agree, RDU has more competitive rates but in your case you appear to me to be pennywise and pound foolish.
Airports don't set Airline rates, though I'm certain the landing fee as well as gate rentals the airports charge all figure into the ticket rate.

Mark,
Great LTE. Love the work you've done in the Art Department at UNCG. Hope the two kids are doing well, and that dear wife of yours too! Happy Holidays!

Same opinion Jon, parking at PTI is a breeze compared to RDU and cheaper. I quit doing the shuttle buses at RDU, too time consuming, and park in the garage near the terminal. More expensive but worth it.
The security at GSO is much easier to get through as well.
I fly out of RDU about 75% of the time. Last flight I took to ATL last week was $450 from GSO, $136 from RDU. There is usually a significant difference. If it's a minor difference then GSO is more convenient.
Just hope and pray US Airways hostile bid for Delta doesn't fly (pun intended), you can watch fares climb into the stratosphere.
