U.N. was built on ideals but practices poor policy

With John Bolton's departure from his position as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, reviewing the utility of this international body seems appropriate.

While the United Nations was founded on ideal principles, its current application invites question as to its capacity to continue to function as a legitimate, beneficial world organization.

In 2001, the U.N. Human Rights Commission passed a vote that refused to grant the United States another term on the commission. But, in that same vote, Sudan was appointed as one of the African representatives.

A Reuters report put it as such: "The commission (is) turning into an 'abuser solidarity' group with more and more countries with questionable human rights records gaining election and then voting as a bloc against singling out individual nations for human rights abuses."

Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that questionable countries such as Russia, Libya, Syria, China, Cuba, Vietnam and Indonesia have found a way onto the panel. Those are countries whose citizens do not enjoy a fraction of the legal protections and freedoms that we Americans take for granted.

With Bolton gone, I'm anxious to see who will take his place and what reform he or she can bring to an organization gone awry.

"With Bolton gone, I'm anxious to see who will take his place and what reform he or she can bring to an organization gone awry."

Hey David, How about changing that to "With Kofi Anan gone....."

Are you actually blaming all of the problems of the UN on Bolton? How long has Bolton been there, 18 months? How long has Kofi Anan been there? Who was in charge? Was Bolton there in 2001 during the Human Rights Commission vote?

What you say is true, the UN is a mess, but please put blame where blame is due and that is not in Bolton's lap.

Kofi Anan has been a disaster for the UN, good riddance. Notice he travels to US soil, in the heartland of MO to deliver his final US bashing speech.

I notice those who constantly call Bush incompetent never mention the same of Kofi Anan. Go look under "incompetence" in the dictionary and you will see a photo of Kofi Annan.

Hopefully Ban Ki-moon will be an improvement. His top priority according to the N&R article today: "the restoration of trust in the world body that has been tarnished by corruption scandals".

The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace. The UN will bring world peace.

Repeat 1000 times.

Dan,
Funny how George Herbert Walker Bush used the United Nations brilliantly to create one of the greatest coalitions in history, to oust Saddam Huessein from Kuwait. He worked the phones, calling dictators, potentates, kings and the like. But now you and the other "Little Enos" supporters cry foul about the United Nations. Reminds me of the father who posted "rules of the home" on the refrigerator for his kids...first rule was, "If you don't know how to operate it, don't turn it on".

Poor little W just doesn't realize that once you pee into the well, you can no longer drink from it. His diplomacy is non existent but his arrogance is still there.

Dan,

I didn't intrepret the letter as blaming Bolton but I can't say I'm sure exactly what the point in naming him was.

However, I agree with the remainder of the letter. From my perspective, the UN, in its current state, has an agenda that does not promote individual freedoms and seems to do alot to try to undermine the US's role in the world.

The thing that frustrates me is that the US is primarily responsible for the UN's existence. If we had pulled out of the UN years ago, I believe it would have ceased to exist. Yet, the UN's leader seemed to thumb his nose at Americans during his term.

Is the UN a good thing? I think in many ways, it does serve a purpose. It is a means of bringing countries from all around the world together in a central location to keep the lines of communication open. I think many times, where the UN fails, is where it tries to do too much.

Dan,
You obviously didn't LISTEN to his speech. Kofi Anan did not "Bash the United States".

Kofi Anan pointed out in no uncertain terms, the shortcomings of the current Bush regime.

The support for Bush is now at 21% and dropping. The Franklin Pierce and Andrew Johnson folks have to love the fact that "W" will at least push them up from the bottom. George W. Bush will, through arrogance and deceit, hold forth in our history books, the bottom of the barrell among Presidents.

DD, you need to read more. My thread mentions Kofi Anan as incompetent and you bring up Gulf War I. Kofi came around in 1997, long after Gulf War I.

As ususal, you lay into Bush but don't utter a negative word about 'ol Kofi. To be expected, just as stated in my first post. Sudan gets an appointment under the Human Rights Commission of all things but that's peachy king to libs like you. Please tell me what a wonderful leader Kofi Anan was, I can't wait to hear it.

Oil for Food scandal, Kofi's son pocketing money from it, UN "peacekeepers" raping women in Africa, doing nothing in Sudan and elsewhere, what a guy.

I read the speech, it's the same 'ol global community rich nation poor nation rich nations need to pay up, Bush sucks, etc.

I like how he says govts. must be accountable in their actions in the international arena. For someone who wasn't accountable for jack s**t including a bunch of missing money, he is the last person who should be preaching accountability.

There is a reason why Ki-moons top priority is to restore trust in the UN. I hope he can.

Oh Dan! Did you not say Kofi Anan went to the heartland of Missouri to deliver an "America Bashing" speech?
Again, real s-l-o-w....he did not bash America. He lambasted Bush for his policies that have caused world tensions and war. Big difference. Bush does NOT equal America---Thank God!

As for Anan, he's no angel, but he certainly could have been used as a tool for world peace rather than to be villified so as to make Georgie boy look strong. Honey, Puhlease! You just don't get it. W's dad was a diplomat and knew how to avoid tragedies like his son has gotten us into. It is very apparent that W has no idea what the word diplomacy means.

Oh, Dan, how'd you like all the tax money spent on the pomp and circumstance for a disgraced Defense Secretary today? Guess that kind of spending is okay with you? I checked, and it seems that Truman did not give General Douglas MacArthur an expensive going away party when he was fired!
With "W", incompetence carries its privileges! LOL!

Try to stick on the subject DD, you are like a hunter who repeatedly shoots into the air and hopes a duck will fall.

The subject is the UN. The ONLY reason I brought up Bush is the anomaly that people like you who rail about Bush being incompetent give incompetent people like Kofi Anan a pass. Why? Because Kofi doesn't like Bush!! If he did you would be on his case like white on rice. Typical partisan hypocrisy.

The best you can come up with is that Kofi is not an angel, the thousands and thousands of dead people in Darfur could agree with that if they were alive to do so.

Yeah yeah I read his speech, of course it bashes Bush (duh) but it goes above and beyond that. Rich countries are bad and need to pay up to achieve a global community with multilateralism. I hope he sends that message to Al Qaeda.

Dan, it is so funny how you can always find a "bogeyman" to draw attention away from the policies of the current administration. When your "hero" tried to claim we were there to depose a dictator, folks stopped and said, "Why not other dictators who are praticing genocide?" But you just kept on supporting the failed policies. Where was the U.S. in a leadership role on Darfur??? Oh, that's right, we were shelling Sadr City in a war that has no end and was unnecessary. If you would READ more and listen to your right wing radio less, you would at least "come off to the general public" as being more intelligent.

Face it DD, you are so enraged with one man that you cannot discuss anything else, witness the Dudley thread. You bash the president in an LTE about Dudley High School!!

This thread is about the UN and I discuss the leader of the UN in my posts. What a concept!! You on the other hand cannot bring yourself to admit the ineptitude of this UN leader and switch to your "bogeyman" GWB.

'Tis entertaining indeed, but I kinda feel sorry for you as you make a fool of yourself. Keep shooting blanks in the air, a duck will fall sometime.

Even though you didn't mention Rush/O'Reilly specifically, I'll add the right wing radio bit to my collection. Thanks.

Dan, go ahead and quit your day job! You have now become "CHIEF APOLOGIST IN RESIDENCE"! LOL!

You go from "trying" to make excuses all the way to the emotional appeal---you are truly amazing.

READ! READ!
