Day to honor Native Americans overdue

I have always wondered why we have never set aside a day to honor the memory of the millions of men, women and children — the Native Americans — who died at the hands of our ancestors.

Over and over we hear the stories of the Holocaust survivors, stories of the men and women who fought and died for this country. We hear about the hard lives and unjust treatment of slaves and the atrocities committed and devastation caused by war. But we do not hear the voices, the stories of atrocities committed on our own land by our own people against the Native Americans. Why?

Taking the land of Native Americans and their forced march across North America was the epitome of greed carried out by government.

We had no right to kill the Native Americans or to force them from their land. This was their home. We were the invaders; we were the terrorists.

This would be a good time to put some reality in our American history. We need a day to remind us of the millions of Native Americans condemned to a harsh life or death so our forefathers could establish our land of the free.

Come-in, Mr. Willett - everyone knows the Indjuns were a Terrorists Threat.

Compare them to the Taliban:

Illiterate.
Men Ruled.
Women were barefoot and pregnant.
Many lived in the stinking desert or in caves.
They dressed funny.

In the very early days, every town in America had it's one Green Zone .. usually defined by a tall picket fence in which the good guys cowered.

It is only because RPG's and IED's had not yet been invented that we were saved.

AND ultimately they were treated well I mean we ended up giving them their very own territory - of course we kept the good stuff for ourselves, but remember: "Our forefathers were very aware that there were then (and are now) imbedded in the general populace those who would attempt to fashion the Constitution to impose economic and social dogmas to gain advantages for themselves."

David, the injuns don't carry enough political clout to get their own day. If only Jefferson or Strom Thurmond had enslaved a couple of them or knocked up a squaw or two, not only would they have had their own day, but perhaps an entire month would have been devoted to them in order to allow the country to reflect on how evil America truly is.

Illiterare ? By who"s standard. All my children have degrees, one has two, guess what, we worked and paid their way in school. I must have been a real dumb ass, myself, I retired when I was 57 . Neocon you are right we have no clout. Rockfeller, I was not the one that posted Nixion took us off the gold standard, and being a prostitute, was legal in Las Vegas. Another thing Rockhead, when my forefathers ruled we had no taxes, if you did not work, you did not eat. You think you could get us in some of those cave men ads. Maybe some day, I will let you come vist my cave, if I had one. My tribe, has always lived in houses, and not goverment housing, can you say the same for your tribe?

I think mine is the Tribe Called Quest or something.

"I have always wondered why we have never set aside a day to honor the memory of the millions of men, women and children — the Native Americans — who died at the hands of our ancestors."

We do. It's called Thanksgiving. We thank them for giving us their country and then we eat.

"We hear about the hard lives and unjust treatment of slaves and the atrocities committed and devastation caused by war. But we do not hear the voices, the stories of atrocities committed on our own land by our own people against the Native Americans. "

Don't know about you but I remember studying about this in US History in school. We studied about the Trail of Tears, the interaction between settlers and Natives, the destructives of diseases that many Europeans brought with them, many of the more popular Chiefs and Warriors, and about skirmishes and battles between settlers and natives. Course, my education may have not been the norm?

Interesting how history repeats itself. The new settlers are Mexican and I guess we're now the natives. Wonder what diseases we won't be able to tolerate. Is it a coincidence that our foods are polluted with salmonella or that the Noravirus is crawling around our hospitals?

Doggie:

I was being sarcastic. I hold a Great Deal of respect for the Classic American Indian. Although they are only now starting to become meaningfully incorpoated into the White Mans World, I'm not sure that's a good thing, but it is practical.

It is true that most (all?) American Indian Cultures lacked written word, and that makes them illiterate .. which does NOT mean they lack intelligence or sensibility. I would also guess they had more spiritualality than most this side of the Pope (and his counterparts).

The rest was pure sarcastism - however there is certainly some truth that 19th century white men .. the ones that believed the only good injun was a dead injun - probably considered them somewhere between in-edible but fun-to-hunt animals and terrorists.

... and for the record, I have NO respect for the Taliban.

As for the rest of your rant (since you brought it up):

I posted that Nixon took us off the gold standard (finished it anyway). So what. It's true and certainly had context, although I sure can't remember what was then being discussed.

Prostitution is legal in Las Vegas. So what. It's true and certainly had context, although I sure can't remember what was then being discussed.

When our forefathers ruled we had no taxes - but they did collect Tariffs. You think they ran the government for free?

If one doesn't work, you don't eat. Sounds like a reasonable plan to me.

Your tribe has always lived in houses. Good! Make your mother proud!

Can I say the same for my tribe? If I answered that, Neo would accuse me of being falsely proud. Get his permission and I'll speak to the topic.

Chill out dude.

"We had no right to kill the Native Americans or to force them from their land. This was their home. We were the invaders; we were the terrorists."

I don't know why you're saying "we." I didn't do any of that stuff.
