Dole says she’s running, but where does she live?

I see in the Feb. 18 paper that Sen. Elizabeth Dole is running for the Senate again. I started doing some research on her about a month ago. Lo and behold, questions started popping up.

First, the election office gave me the home phone number of Sen. Richard Burr, but Dole’s district office number. Does she really live in North Carolina? I believe her husband, Bob Dole, lives in the Midwest. Is she just using North Carolina as a mailing address? It seems to me that if she really lived here, we local folks would see and hear more from Bob Dole.

During her term in office, what has she done for North Carolina?

Why did she select Kinston to announce that she is running again? Why not Raleigh, Greensboro or Salisbury?

To me she is like a zero in math: a place holder. Surely, North Carolina has qualified candidates who really live here.

For the record, I am registered unaffiliated and will press this issue about Sen. Dole from now on.

I gotta agree with this letter. Dole has not truly lived here in many, many years.

I would support tougher laws to ensure folks meant to represent us are not just residents on paper.

I would agree with the writer that this is not a partisan issue. Hillary Clinton is a prime example of a democrat doing the same thing, maybe worse. I wonder how much Bill hangs around the house in New York.

The GOP just wanted a warm body that was electable...they didn't care about whether she would actually be a good Senator from North Carolina. We should all be ashamed of having let her election happen, as she is as worthless as teats on a man!
What a joke for a Senator...if you do not think so, then go watch the rerun of "Meet the Press" on the Sunday before the November election 2006. In fact, I beseech all the GOP partisan hacks to watch that show and THEN tell us how great she is! I won't hold my breath.

Give Giddy a break. Everyone knows the DC Metro area offers a much better selection of hair and nail salons and dress shops than can be found in NC.

To begin, comparing Diddy Dole to Hillary is unjust. New York state has had the law allowing such to happen for around 40 years now. That is NY NOT NC. NC does not have such a law as NY.

And for the record, I have heard, seen, read where Bill Clinton has been in/around his office in Harlem on many occasions.

And to conclude, I have one word for Diddy Dole; CARPETBAGGER!

Shalom

Yeah yeah Darryl, please tell us Hillary's ties to NY. At least Dole was born in NC and attended Duke University.

Hillary was born in IL and attended Wellesley College and Yale Law School, located in MA & CT respectively. Hey those states are close to NY, maybe that counts Darryl.

After Hill & Bill were married in 1975 they lived in AR until Bill made the big move to DC. Where are the ties to NY Darryl?

This is ironic. Since Hillary was born in IL she should have moved to IL and run as senator there. Maybe then Obama wouldn't have become a senator from IL and now running for prez against Hillary???? I'm not sure about the seat openings at the time so perhaps it wouldn't have worked. JDR could probably tell us off the top of his head.

Dan,
You are missing one important point here. HILLARY ACTUALLY MOVED TO NEW YORK!! Ms. Dole still has no residence and pays no taxes here. So the Clintons pay NY property taxes and Giddy just says she's from North Carolina.
So, for a moment, remove the partisanship from this and look at it from a practical point. If the Senator does not pay taxes in her state, she's no resident in my opinion.
Dan, you ought to go see "Amazing Grace" the movie. Saw it today and it was great! Story of abolitiionists of the slave trade in England.

Deacon, thank you for point out the fact of who has residency where!

Dan, another point missing is this; I only referenced Hillary as a point. If you do not like the way NY law is written, then I suggest you contact your representative in the NY legislature.

The point is not about NY law however. Rather, it is about the CARPETBAGGER who supposedly represents the people of NC! I find that she rarely, if ever, represents my concerns! I have email evidence to support this.

So Dan, why not comment on the CARPETBAGGER rather than using the old smoke and mirrors technique of focusing on something that does not pertain to the topic matter. That is like the old "bait & switch" marketing principle. So, now back to the discussion of the CARPETBAGGER who does not reside in the State in which the people elected her to represent.

Shalom

I love this letter to the editor because I've been asking myself the same question since we sent Ms. Dole (back) to Washington. Where is she? What is she doing? What does she believe in other than rubber stamping whatever the Republican leadership puts on her desk? I can only guess that if Bob is indeed "somewhere in the midwest" with all those free samples of Viagra he must have received, our Liddy must be somewhere out there too! Bert

Darryl,

I think it goes back to the saying of "those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks".

The lte writer identified themselves as unaffilliated. My comments were simply there to keep the rock throwers from trying to pick up any boulders.

I've got problems with Senators picking a state and running a campaign from it. Even though Dole was born here, I do not believe she was anything near a resident of this state when she decided to run for Senate here.

Honestly, she and so many of the other political figures have been in Washington so long, that MANY of them are truly more residents of DC than they are one of the 50 states.

I guess Dole and Clinton are just so in your face about it that it's more noticeable.

But truly, it really comes down to the voters. If a majority of the voters want to vote for Hillary or Liddy, then I guess we can't complain too much. Perhaps if the dems will come up with better than Erskine Bowles, they'll have a shot this time around. Maybe Al Gore could run for NC Senator. He's probably been here a time or two.

Honestly, though.

Two Senators come to mind.

Jesse Helms:

Born and raised in NC. He's been a resident of this state for 86 years. Probably did more lobbying for state interests than any recent Senators. How'd folks like him?

John Edwards:

Born and raised in NC. Didn't take his job in the Senate very seriously. Didn't do much of anything for state interests because he was too busy lobbying for John Edwards. How'd folks like him?

Maybe there's a reason we had to go out of state to get a Senator.

Nit,
Do you even remember who Giddy ran against??!!
The current President of the University of North Carolina---a lifelong resident and the son of one of the most "devoted" North Carolinians EVER! Hargrove "Skipper" Bowles single handedly raised over 90% of the private funds that built the Dean E. Smith Center on the Chapel Hill Campus. He was from right here in Greensboro and he worked for the benefit of this state during his last days--from a wheelchair. The GOP torpedoed him in 1972 with an unknown candidate, James E. Holshouser. They characterized Bowles as a "wealthy liberal". (Funny thing is, Holshouser would be a LIBERAL if he were running today)

Unfortunately, Erskine Bowles was "Swift Boated" as a "LIBERAL" by the pit vipers of the national GOP. So the NC people got "Giddy" Dole instead of a true North Carolina taxpaying citizen.

One more thing---Bowles' background is a businessman, and a very well respected administrator. Dole is a politician.

If there's one thing even you should know, DD, is that being the son of somebody respected doesn't mean jack shit.

Bowles is a good old Carolina boy and he's probably better off making $400,000 plus at his new job ruining the UNC system.

Bowles wasn't swiftboated. He just couldn't win. And let's not forget, he didn't just lose once. He lost twice. If your candidate loses to Burr, you ain't got much of a candidate.

Bowles was sniped at by remnants of the Congressional Club, and targeted as 'TOO LIBERAL FOR NORTH CAROLINA".
Don't think the atmosphere is right for that kind of campaign to work in the next election. I just hope the Dems put up someone the caliber of Bowles so that we can retire Dole and Burr over the next cycles. People are sick and tired of the character assassins like Karl Rove and the late Lee Atwater. Of course the kingpin of race baiting was Vernon Robinson and we all see where it got him. Paying attention, Hugh?
