In response to Steve Gorden's letter (Feb. 19) accusing the "far left" of having its head in the sand, I would say ... huh? I guess Mr. Gorden is part of the 20 percent of this country that still feels that this bumbler-in-chief and his merry band of criminals are doing a fine job.
May I remind him that if we were not dumping a billion dollars a week down the toilet in Iraq, we might have been able to finish the job in Afghanistan and confront the nut-job leaders of Iran and North Korea instead of ignoring them until they became real threats. It is his heroes who are killing our education system with their unfunded mandates, running up ridiculous deficits with their No Millionaire Left Behind tax policies and ignoring the dwindling middle class.
As for invoking Big Brother, has he even been paying attention over the last six years? If he were to remove his head from the sand for a few minutes and take his ideology out of the equation, he might notice that his man Bush is driving us over a cliff.

I thought it was closer to $2 billion a week .. not including military equipment replacement or soldier rehabilitation or rebuild of Iraq.
Written prove of the uneducated liberal Bush basher!

Must admit, the 21% are a fiesty group. Not very bright, but fiesty. "Reality Challenged" and fiesty. God love 'em.

"do you find it strange they you never see a letter about Raliegh in this paper ?"
Spelling aside, no. Greensboro is so important that we don't even have room in our newspaper for news out of Raleigh, let alone Ashville or Wilmington. NYC, Chicago, Seattle, and LA don't exist unless some celeb gets drunk in public, and the rest of the world is reduced to less than a dozen one or two paragraph blurbs buried on inside pages.
Get real, man! We're so important that we don't need to read any science, we only need meaningful economics once every other month or so, and national politics can be covered in the same way that the miracle of the week story is. Foreigners don't have politics to report on.
We are, however, fully informed about the really important and enduring values of Western Civilization: who stubbed his toe playing basketball and who was caught cheating trying to make his non-stock car go as fast as it can as long ass it can in a race that is supposed to show whose car can go the fastest longest.

Great letter to the editor, Mr. Welsh, in stark contrast to the letter from Mr. Moschetti. I completely agree that we should have concentrated on the situation in Afghanistan, which was difficult enough. We should NEVER have gone to Iraq in the first place. We have created a breeding ground for terrorists in Iraq, not eradicated the known breeding ground in Afghanistan.
And for all the conservatives' brave words about "supporting the troops," the ones whose shattered bodies and brains come back are getting the runaround and the shaft. We should be mortified with shame.

Nit,
Mr. Welsh and I are not the same person, but I do like his letter. My comments were directed at Dog.

Don't ya think it's past time to update your percentage, DemonDeacon? If it ever WAS 21%, site your source and DATE. I believe current numbers are closer to double that figure. Still below 50%, you say? Acknowledged ... but then EVERY recent President has had similar ARs.
Playing the game your way, I guess it would be okay to drag out the 89% rating from 2001 and beat that drum to death, eh? You know ... just find a number ya like and stick with it ... never mind if it's current, right?
Reality challenged? Well, only if one continues to swallow out-of-date pablum from those who flog dead horses.

Jack,
You are so right about bringing my numbers into line with the new year. Below are the results of this past month's poll on Bush's handling of the Iraq war:
ABC News Poll From 1/16-19/2007
Shows 29% Approval 70% Disapprove 1% unsure
So not even three people in ten support the President and his terrific job performance in Iraq.
The real point about my oft quoted 21% is that's the number of "hard core" or as I say "kool ade" drinkers who would support Bush even if he invaded Canada. These folks represent the "reality challenged" segment of our society.

Jack,
You may want to add this to your "favorites":

results for this period are not coming in too favorable for your man so far.

I notice you "cherry-picked" the lowest approval rating of 2007 for your example, not the most recent one, DemonDeacon. Gotta hand it to ya, though, you are a MASTER of statistical selection.
I imagine that I can find a recent poll showing a overall positive AR for President Bush without a great deal of difficulty. But why bother? I already acknowledged that his rating is generally below 50% ... or did you selectively overlook that as well?
My man? Hardly! My man would have selected the "Go Strong" option over the "Go Long" concept from the beginning.

This real conservative has to agree with you. I apologize often for voting for the man, although I would not have voted for Bush's Skull & Bones brother Kerry either.

PatriotBeliever,
I can respect you, because you do not deny the blunders of the current adminstration. What I cannot understand are the ones who see and STILL do not believe. Yes, it's a character flaw with me.
