Praise for Scout sends wrong message

The following is a Counterpoint:

By Rhonda Landreth

I am writing in response to the incident with Michael Auberry. I am the Cub master for a pack in Kernersville. I have had one son to make Life Scout and two sons who are First Class Scouts, so I feel very confident in what I am about to say.

I will be the first to say thank the Lord that Michael survived his ordeal. I want to thank his Scout master and leaders for teaching him the things he would need to survive. However, praising him for disobeying Scout rules is not the way to go.

The day I heard Michael was missing, I told my husband that he got upset about something and walked off, breaking the first two very important rules: 1) buddy, 2) tell an adult. We teach our Cubs as early as Tiger Cubs these rules. Never leave without a buddy, and tell an adult or leader where you are headed. This way the adult makes sure you have your buddy. And, 3) if you do find yourself lost, hug a tree. That reminds them to stay put, we'll find you. Don't keep moving.

If Michael and his family had been on a family camping trip and Michael wandered off and got lost, that would be a different story. He could have the praise. But he was a Scout on a Scout camping trip and broke rules. We have these rules to help protect our Scouts and the leaders.

I understand this became national news; talk shows are calling him; Kenny Chesney has written to him; and maybe many other celebrities will call or write. But, what message are we sending the Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and even children not in scouting? Look, if you break the rules and get lost, you become a famous person.

If the media continue to show this, I hope they are clear about the reason Michael became lost in the first place: He broke rules. I am sure that if he had been my child, a Scout leader somewhere would be writing this same letter to you.

I think the boy just wanted a helicopter ride.

The kid is a brat who refused to take the planned hike up the mountain and took off to "find a road and hitchhike home". He's an 'ADD' kid who has a great desire to be the center of attention in any situation. He had no business going with this group in the first place without his Dr. there to supply him with the new age drugs used to control undisciplined children.

neocon,
You are such an idiot!
The parents took an amazingly brave stand, refusing to go on Letterman, Oprah, or go to the White House.

While Michael Auberry may be immature, he is just 12 years old! How old are you, neocon? Seems that for someone who claims to have fought in Vietnam, you have the mind of a 4 year old. Why don't you start the condemnation by looking at your pitiful life of finger pointing and thinking that YOU have all the answers. It is YOU, neocon, who needs to grow up. Was your separation from service, for mental reasons? We'll hold our breath for that answer, but meanwhile, stick to the things you are an expert on, like being a total assh_le!

I can remember being 12 years old and extremely shy. I had my comfort zone of friends but remember feeling like a fish out of water when placed in situations like Michael faced.

I can relate to the idea of wanting to do anything to escape it. The ADD part is tough because it can cause your mind to race and not always make the most rational of decisions. Having suffered with that for most of my life, I can definitely relate to that part. I have learned to control that to a point but at 12 years old it was tough.

I can't remember hearing anybody praise what Michael did. I think everyone was just relieved that the boy was alive. I think his parents made the right decision regarding any further exposure. Neither Michael or his parents could do much to slow down the media once they found this was a hot story. What they could do, it appears they did do.

Easy to tell to when you get even remotely to the truth...our Canadian wannabee goes balistic.

The kid didn't refuse to go on Letterman or Oprah. His dad did. Even you should be able to grasp the difference world traveler.

The kid didn't "wander off" and the lamestream media has misled the public once again. He left of his own accord because he didn't want to hike with the rest of the pack. He wanted attention. Much like you,wt.

I believe this LTTE write has hit on excellent points. What she did not note was that Michael was left ALONE in camp with only ONE adult! That is a BIG "no, no" in scouting (and other groups as well).

I believe that the father in this case noted that his son (Michael) was homesick due to some of his friends not going on the camping trip. Therefore, he was going to go home. Sounds like a spoiled kid to me. That is what I would have been called anyway.

I found it discomforting to learn that Michael was allowed to "sleep in" while his fellow scouts went on a hike. I found that counter to team-building, etc. That does not sound like scouting to me. However, I have a very limited knowledge of same.

Anyway, good letter with some valid thinking points.

Shalom

YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!!
Neocon blames the liberal media in reference to a missing Boy Scout!! Delusional at best, and mentally challenged at worst, neocon continually proves he IS irrelevant.

Like many who post here, I wish neocon would just go call the "BEEP" over at the Rhino Times rather than post here. Or maybe he could start watching the high pressure system on the weather channel, as it moves South. Or maybe he could hop out of his "Rascal" and exercise a bit.

What will neocon blame the "liberal media" for next? Eczema? Alopecia? Sexually transmitted diseases? His cynical view of things is exacerbated by his lack of formal education. Could someone just volunteer to read him/her a story when he gets home from the sheltered workshop? Yes, neo, we have your number and you are nothing more than a blowhard for right wing causes and FoxNoise channel. Do you ride a "Rascal" or an "Amigo"? Whichever, maybe you need to put it in high gear when you get out to the next boat ramp! LOL!

Apparently your reading comprehension is about 3rd grade level, O Canadian wannabee. I never blamed the kid's actions on the lamestream media.
Where did the lamestream media inform us of the fact that this kid had the problems I have described?
You seem to have grown more and more obsessed with me after you outed yourself as a coward and was called on it. Are these two related? (your obsession and your coming out of the closet and admiting your weak knees) Just curious. Perhaps you should see a shrink.

"The kid didn't "wander off" and the lamestream media has misled the public once again. He left of his own accord because he didn't want to hike with the rest of the pack."

neocon,
Hate to break it to you, but the media was all over this story and you are, as usual, a day late, and always a brick shy. Why don't you go ahead and sling mud at the parents who are infinitely smarter than you are. You are like rust, in that you add little, but can absolutely deteriorate any situation. Glad to know that YOU think you have all the solutions, oh small minded one. Wheel yourself around and shut the hell up.

" shut the hell up"...
The Canadian wannabee has advanced to 4th grade level.

I would truly enjoy being "shut the hell up" by you.

neo,
Hop on your rascal and as your hero says, "bring it on"! LOL!
By the way, is that moustache just there to hide the "stretch marks"!! LOL

You are such a joke, that from now on, I will join the rest of the world, and just ignore you.

"is that moustache just there to hide the "stretch marks"!! LOL"

Now there's a quote that looks as if it came from a mature source. Your alma mater must be absolutely glowing with pride.

" I will join the rest of the world, and just ignore you".

You have been ignoring the questions I have posed to you for several days, now. Could it be that you are ignoring them because they make you reflect upon what your children might have thought of you when you exposed to them the real coward in yourself? Could it be because the answers to these questions makes you a bit uncomfortable? Do you ignore them because you know the children will always remember the time their father cowered in fear and hid his American citizenship behind the flag of another country?
You must be super proud of yourself to set such a fine example. But such stories as your are commonplace among the gutless, eh world traveler?

Apparently, Rhona Landreth has never heard the story of the Prodigal Son. Luke 15:11-32.

Pragmatist, I believe that the "story" of the Prodigal Son in Christian scripture deals ENTIRELY with another realm of thinking. To use scripture in this manner in this case truly takes the scripture story TOTALLY and COMPLETELY out of context.

If discussing scripture is a cause that is cared to be undertaken, I am ready.

Shalom

Didn't mean to strike a nerve, Darryl.

Shalom back atcha.

Neocon,

My guess is that the Canadian Flag thing never happened at all. Just something posted to draw a response.

So take your pick: Coward or Liar.

Saw a couple of good lines on a bathroom wall the other day:

"If you always tell the truth, you don't have to worry about remembering anything"

"Never miss an opportunity to shut up"

I'll do the last.

Have a good weekend.

nitpicker,

I am neither a coward or a liar, but to even carry on a conversation with our "Village Idiot" makes zero sense. He's obviously some poor fellow who has no life, no friends, and his high water mark was high school shop class.
I'll humor him, and love to agitate him, but he is truly irrelevant on this blog and in the game called life.
His intrasigence indicates a very low level of learning and his myopic views on EVERYTHING indicate he has not ventured very far from his lower socio-economic area of comfort. The "blue collar" chip on his shoulder is a result of years' of frustration at being much less than he thinks he should be. He has convinced himself that he is the recipient of tax cuts for the top 2%, while in reality he receives earned income tax "credits". I could go on and on, but I think you and I...and EVERYONE else can see that he is a tortured human being who blames "liberals" for all his shortcomings.

I actually suspected this Canadian flag story was a lie and a lame attempt to blame Bush as the reason NO American is safe anywhere, anytime.

But truth or lie, it has backfired terribly and he can't just lay it down now, can he?

I will continue to remind the pride of WF of his cowardly acts in front of his children and wife and ask what did they think when he told them he was afraid to travel as an American.

Of this I have no doubt: I have made the world traveler very conscious of his cowardice/lies as evidenced by his heightened attacks on me. Like an untrained puppy nipping at the heels of a grownup he is squealing for all he is worth.

Oh how the "Village Idiot" can't join the ranks of a thinking society. Finally figured it out, neo, you were shot by your fellow troops! Hop on your "Rascal" and head to your 'support group'! LOL!!

" Hop on your "Rascal" and head to your 'support group'! LOL!!"

Another quality comment from the mental giant...

You are starting to sound like Ned Beaty.:]
