While driving recently on U.S. 311 from Winston-Salem to High Point, I couldn't help but notice all the orange trash bags on the side of the road. Some crew or civic organization had been picking up our litter and putting it in bags for disposal. I was amazed at the number of bags. Every hundred yards there was another bag or two or three. And it's not just along 311; it's everywhere. All that litter is a disgrace.
When I'm driving, I save my trash until I can dispose of it properly, and I'm sure a lot of New & Record readers do the same. But what about that litterbug we spot while driving? Did you know you can turn him in?
The N.C. Department of Transportation has a Swat-A-Litterbug program. If you see someone throwing any type of trash from of a car, get the license plate number and report it to 1-877-DOT-4YOU (1-877-368-4968). The DOT will notify the vehicle owner of the littering offense, inform the owner of the penalties for littering and urge the litterbug to stop littering.
Just be sure you pull to the side of the road before making that call.

i find that there's nothing more exhilarating than using my grease-coated fingers to wad up my hardee's bag and shovel it out my car window... (in or around sunset drive, near the third hole).
and to those fru-fru women who walk around that place to show-off their entitled unemployment...BURP!!!

Give me your tag # bucky so I can call it in. I think people who litter are idiots most likely raised by idiots.

Dan,
We are on the same page here! Can't recall how long it's been since I've seen anything OTHER than a cigarette thrown out a window, but judging from the apron on I-40, it's still happening.
The "smoker's mentality" reminds me of the folks who walk their dogs and let them lay pipe in someone else's yard. Because a cigarette is a 'lit' item, I think that throwing cigarettes out the window should carry a much higher fine than the $250 or $300 that plain littering carries.
Dan is right on the money, these folks who litter have been reared by idiots. So, when you see a smoker throw a butt out the window, write down the tag.
Does anyone have "neocon's" license number?

What's neocon got do with anything? Has he ever supported littering?
Yeah, I guess they could consider a lit cigarette butt a 'missile' or 'wmd' and throw someone in jail for years. That might solve the problem.
It's rare that I see anyone throw out garbage but I sure do find it a lot around my yard and along the streets. Every long once in a while I actually see it and will usually beep my horn at the offender to let them know they've been seen anyway.
Which, from the sound of it, isn't much different than what this letter is proposing. Without any penalty besides urging them to stop littering, I can't see it will make much difference.
These folks know they shouldn't be littering. They just don't give a ----.

nitpicker, no truer a comment has been spoken (written) than your last one!
I applaud the principle of the 1-800 number in the LTTE. However, I feel this is a waste of public funds having this number and the personnel (equipment) needed. If the only thing happening is a telephone call urging the offender to stop littering, there is yet another waste of the public's monies!
Instead, a citation should be sent to the offender when someone telephones in with the tag number of an offending vehicle. Put a heafty fine on it and then seize the tag if not paid in 30 days and not allow the offending vehicle to obtain another until it is paid! That should stop quite a bit of littering. When you hit people in their wallet, they generally correct poor habits/behavior.

The litter letters don't accuse anyone of anything. They just relay your observations to the registrant of the vehicle whose license tag you called in and provide info on the economic and environmental cost of litter.
In other words, they are harmless.
But they are effective because they look official. Plus, imagine the joy you can provide to mom and dad when they find out what Junior's been up to in their car.

Used to be I would use the bed of my truck, but since they no longer allow me to drink and drive, I'm now forced to throw out the empties .. getting rid of the evidence.
Seriously I have issues with the 1-800 number. One could settle (or start) a feud by simply calling in a license plate number.

"One could settle (or start) a feud by simply calling in a license plate number."
That's my point, James! So, who has neocon's license plate number???!

Golly Gee Whiz! How DO you come up with all those nifty zingers, world traveler?
I haven't experienced such wit since kindergarten. It must be really neat to have such a broad mind!

BTW,
When are you going to tell me what your children's reaction was when you suggested the Canadian flag be sewn to their backpacks on your European trip to cover your cowardice? Were they not the least bit curious? How about your wife? She question your motives? Or did she know of your yellow streak all along and simply went along with you so as not to upset the children?
These questions usually are a show stopper for a thread. I wonder if the world traveler has the guts to answer them here...or will he tell me my Amigo needs a tune up?
