The Bellamy-Small saga has lasted long enough

The Dianne Bellamy-Small issue has gone on long enough. It is time for Bellamy-Small to resign from her position on the Greensboro City Council. Now that she has been "called out" by council member Florence Gatten for the sake of the city and City Council, as well as the people whom she represents in District 1, if she really cares about this city she should step down.

She is a distraction to the City Council. She is confrontational and opposes most council actions.

Up until now, it might be said that no one spoke out against Bellamy-Small for fear of backlash from the black community with charges of racism. Her behavior reflects on the black community in a negative light. The black community, even her constituency, is not proud of the manner in which she conducts herself as an elected public official. I, as an Afro-American, am not proud of her.

Apparently, she has become obsessed with the power of her position and continues to flaunt that power in and out of the council chambers. Bellamy-Small has had her 15 minutes of fame. For the sake of all concerned, it is time for her to resign, ASAP.

Let's see. An upper-crust white woman speaks out against an elected black politician. That should definitely end all feelings of racism.

The only black community that Bellamy-Small has to answer to is the community that lives in District One.

I wonder if Pollard Stanford lives in District One?

Dear NP,
Why is it ALWAYS the assumption that if a person is white they are automatically a racist? Could it possibly be that their comments regarding a black person might just have something to do with what the black person has said or done and NOT the color of their skin? C'mon. And any citizen served by the city council is impacted by someone who impends it's smooth function, not just district one folks. Tracy

Tracy,

Good comments. I can't answer your first question. I don't think that way. However, I can tell you that there are many folks who do support DBS who will perceive that Florence Gatten is an uppity white woman picking on a black woman who dared to challenge the status quo.

I think we probably feel the same way as far as DBS's effectiveness and the way she's made a butt of herself. However, I do think her skin color has made her mis-steps a much larger issue than they should be. I say that both on the fact that you've got the "everything is racist" black folk on one side, and you've got the white folk on the other side who unconsciously attack every flaw in black leaders.

NP,
Good points.
Tracy

nit, clarify this comment from the posting above: "...lorence Gatten is an uppity white woman picking on a black woman who dared to challenge the status quo."

How was DBS challenging the "status quo" when she ridiculed and berated a police officier for duing his duty? Did I misread the context of your statement? Help me on this one please.

Shalom

Darryl,

Failing to follow the rules set up by 'the man' qualifies as challenging the 'status quo' for many folks.

So, let me see if I have this correct nit, "the man" setting up speed limits, etc. constitutes racism; regardless of the race of who sets them up?

Wow, that is amazing. I do not know any way to constructively dialogue on this one any further.

Shalom

I didn't like it when Rob Moores, a former county commissioner and a white man, attempted to blame everyone else for his drunk-driving stop. I don't like it when Bellamy-Small coerces a rookie cop to not give her a ticket for speeding. Racism is treating people differently because of race. That's not the case with most of the people here.

Darryl,

I don't think you are getting what I'm saying. Just suffice it to say that you and I agree. The sarcasm just isn't coming through.

"I didn't like it when Rob Moores, a former county commissioner and a white man, attempted to blame everyone else for his drunk-driving stop"

Robert Moores was the epitome of a bad public official. Unfortunately, District Five continues to give us the hayseed commissioners--case in point, Billy Yow. My favorite Robert Moores memory is his toupee---that thing looked like a raccoon cap with chinstraps! You know he was bad if the Republican party censured him! One has to REALLY screw up to get them to distance themselves from the bizarre.
Moores blamed Wally and Skip for his bad behavior, and Bellamy-Smalls claims racism. Proves you can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh_t!
