I often agree with columnist Mona Charen's viewpoint, and I think she's right in arguing that we shouldn't be ashamed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement (column, March 31).
Nevertheless, I thought she was way off base to suggest that African Americans should be grateful that their ancestors had been dragged off to the New World as slaves, considering the corruption, cruelty and genocide to be found in Africa. She attributed that statement to African American foreign correspondent Keith Richburg of The Washington Post, but it was still an incredibly callous and insensitive thing for her to write -- and I think she should humbly apologize.

Mona broke PC protocol but she is correct. The African ancestors of todays American black population made tremendous sacrifices against their will. Not only in being taken from their home countries but also serving as slaves here. Because of those sacrifices, todays American black people are fortunate to live here instead of there.
I never can find too many takers, black or white, who would prefer living in Africa than the US.
Shame on Mona for being politically incorrect.

Hey Dan, I bet ol' JDR would love to live in Africa considering how he hates America. Of course I'm sure Cuba or N.Korea would be more of his liking.

I figured all those black folks in Jamestown had just transitioned in from Five Points in High Point.
Gosh, I never knew.
Dan, I agree and actually made that point last week in discussing an apology for slavery.
Then again, I'm not known as the most sensitive person. But I ain't apologizing cause after all, we should never be ashamed of who we are. (think I heard that one on a discussion about gay marriage).
