On May 3, 10 Republican candidates for president held a debate at the Ronald Reagan Library. Much of the discussion was framed in terms of President Reagan's virtues. This led me to think more about his legacy.
One major thing President Reagan did was authorize the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. That act provided a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented workers who were in the United States at that time. They had lived here for years, worked hard, paid taxes, and generally had been law abiding. The act allowed families to reunite and provided an economic foundation for U.S. business by assuring an adequate supply of legal resident laborers for agriculture, construction and other facets of the economy.
President Reagan demonstrated traditional Republican values with his immigration reform act, including minimized government intervention, family preservation, rewards for hard work, compassionate conservatism, and a foundation for further economic growth. It was enacted without rancor, hate-mongering or scapegoating. Historically the United States has regularly updated immigration laws in accordance with our nation's most cherished values and needs.
The government defines legal status. It is time again to fix our broken immigration system with a new comprehensive immigration reform act.

Yes, let's do rush to reward anyone who enters our country illegally. Yea, they deserve all the freebies we are giving them as reward for being here as illegal aliens. That ought to fix the immigration problem. Let us just throw more American money to blanket that problem. I can see the logic in that...NOT!

I am appalled that anyone would associate Ronald Reagan with compassionate conservatism. Reagan stood for good old uncompassionate conservativism, the kind that, instead of buying off old people with free drugs, was premised on the belief that Americans could and should assume responsibility for their own lives with a minimum of governmental interference. Compassionate conservatism is, in truth, little better than liberalism.

As I recall, the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act was also a "One time only, last chance" pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented workers ...
... I do have a question ... if "traditional Republican values ... including minimized government intervention .. ", why did the Federal Debt get so durm much bigger during his term?

Ah! It's May and on the wind wafts the smell of flower, fresh cut grass and the gentle chirping of Reagan worshipers. Hail Ronnie, Hail Ronnie, Hail Ronnie.
Perhaps we should rename the Mexican border for Ronnie and that would make them happy perhaps the Rio Ronnie.

If my memory serves me, the 1980s and prior most Americans had jobs. In this area (Triad & surrounding), there were MANY textile and furniture jobs available that paid fairly well WITH benefits. Now, that is no longer. All that remains are shells of those long gone factories!
So, with that in mind, exactly where are these people supposed to work? Where are all of the people who once worked in the above mentioned factories getting jobs similar to what they had?
I recall that in Winston-Salem there was an illegal person/family who had purchased a house with an FHA loan (illegal for an illegal). The "man of the house" had a job in GSO making over $40k. Then it seems that he was also going around raping women! After his arrest, I have heard NOTHING from the media about this case.
This is only one example. There is another in the "Life" section of today's
N&R. I feel for these people, yet, poor choices have poor consequences. If I make a poor choice, then I suffer the poor consquences. No one is exempt from that. No one should be!

Fence along the border:
I can almost hear Ronnie now,
"Mr. President, tear down that wall!"
Did Reagan leave a "Great" legacy?
I'll answer that with Ronnie's words:
"I don't recall".
