I have been living in Greensboro for one year now. I moved here from New York City. I like this town very much. It's nice, clean and a great place to live.
But I have only one thing to say about Greensboro: When is the City Council going to stop people from talking on their cell phones while driving? I almost got hit two times. I think hands-free phones are in order. If people can walk in the street with an earpiece, then they can drive with one.
I know this is not the big city, but please, does someone have to get hurt before something is done? I look both ways before I cross. Are the drivers looking at the road and talking at the same time?

and also, when black people are holding a phone to their heads 24 hours a day, are they really talking to someone?

Janet, what does your being from New York City have to do with anything?
I love the way people flee the liberal, nanny state strongholds, then come here and advocate everyone adopt the 'way we did it' back home.
"I know this is not the big city"...
Thank God for that.

I rang my young son's neck the other day. He was driving me around and pulled out his cell phone to check a text message.
Dad used vocabulary reserved for bad referee calls and school administrators.

Neo, you must be really out of sorts with the failure of your neocon buddies. It's the only reasion I cam imagine that you feel the compelling need to show how dumb you really are by commenting on every LTE with an anti democratic statement. For your information, New York was one of the first of many states to ban talking on a cel phone without a hands free device. It's a good law, and make the roads safer. Every time i am driving and see a car that is moving in a slow, erratic, or otherwise unsafe manner, the driver is on a cel phone.
It's a good idea, and one that is overdue.

I don't think the bad driving is caused by driving with one hand. It's caused by folks looking away from the road and at their phone to read text, phone directory, etc.
If you pass a law requiring two hands on the wheel then you're gonna cause a lot of problems with the drive-thru Big Mac, Whopper, and Java crowds.

mikeg,
Great post! About a week or so ago, the village idiot got REALLY spankekd, and I mean incesssantly, by several of us. With only one in four Americans still supporting Dubya, he's been forced to deal with little or no support on this blog. Don't get me wrong, there are a few "brain dead" who will parrot whatever Rush, Hannity or Savage tell them, but even they are too embarrassed to make fools of themselves as often as neo does.
He doesn't know, that he doesn't know!!
LOL!
Keep up the good posts!

Mick, you are too funny! Supporting your buddy neo again? Does the phrase, "Water seeks its level" mean anything to you?

buckreeds,
Why do you come out with such stereotypical drivel as
"and also, when black people are holding a phone to their heads 24 hours a day, are they really talking to someone?"

I think there should be a law that guarantees that the first time somebody says "I moved here from New York City...", that they are shot on site.

DWTOC "Driving While Talking On Cellphone" is almost as bad as DWI "Driving While Intoxicated" Driving is full time with all of the drivers attention. When the attention is divided, the ability to react is greatly reduced. However, a cellphone user while driving will rationalize that they can drive as good if not better while they chit-chat. For years as a law enforcer, I heard drunk driver always claim that they are better drivers after a few belts of their favorite numbing beverage. I've watch drivers drive through a red light at the normal speed, never slowing down. And, not a "just changing light". Horns blasting, tires screaming, and the offending driver, windows rolled up, radio on and yaking away, did not even notice it. Here's my rule for myself: I always pull over into a safe parking area if I need to make a call. If the phone rings while I'm driving, I find a safe place to pull off and then I answer the phone. Oh, it stopped ringing! Oh dad Gum it. Now, I have to take about 1 second and look at the last number called. Then I can decide whether I need to recontact the caller or not. Not much of a brain thrust on my end. The thing is, I know I'm a lousy driver. So, I take every precaution I can. Hands at 10:00 and 2:00. Never exceed the posted limits, stay awake and alert. I've never had a citation which means I've saved a bundle of $$$$$ with insurence premiums, traffic fines and court cost. I'm outa here.

How was my statement supportive of Neo? It was simply "ANTI" you. I will not delve further into my disdain for your behavior here.

Pay no mind to T L CANADIAN Mick. He is obsessed with ol neo. Without me, he'd have no one at all to pat his head. He vows to 'ignore' me every time I spank his little hind end, but he quickly learns that without me, he has no one...except for an occassional pat on the rump from Rufus or sweet pea.

mikeg, please show me where I mentioned the democrats in my post. Thanks in advance.
Your simple minded rant speaks for itself. I was just asking what "New York City" and "this is not a big city" had to do with cell phone useage.
Did mama forget to give you your ritalin today?

I will speak on a cell phone when driving but I pull over if I have to write something. Common sense.
A few questions, how well is this law enforced in other states where it is law? Do cops actually pull people and give them a citation for talking? How many people abide by the law? How many people simply put the phone in their lap if a cop passes by?
How many cops pull someone now for not wearing seat belts? I often see unrestrained kids in cars.
Is it a good use of our police force to track down cell phone users? Will we have to raise taxes to afford more of them?
I see people daily doing stupid things behind the wheel without a cell phone in hand.
Personally I don't think this law is enforceable. Sure they will catch a few but what percentage of speeders are caught.
Just more govt. control over our lives because we are too stupid to take care of ourselves.
One note: a plane at the airport where I fly landed with the gear up last year. Turns out he was talking on a cell phone while attempting to land and forgot to lower the gear!! Then he was stupid enough to actually ADMIT it!!
Now THAT is when you don't want to be using a cell phone!!
The FAA has not banned cell phones whilst piloting private aircraft. I think they understand there are a few idiots but most are responsible.

I agree that generally, cell phone use while driving should be banned. However, I'm afraid it will be just another law on paper. Besides, is using a cell phone while driving any more dangerous than the young people who are driving with their seat practically in a reclining position to where they can't see over the steering wheel?
The other day, I saw a teenage male driving with his seat laid back AND talking on a cell phone AND wearing a ball cap that was practically covering his face with his windows rolled down and the music blaring so loudly that it rattled MY windows. Maybe I'm wrong, but there are many things drivers are doing now which shouldn't be allowed!

I agree that talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous. It's not the holding of the cell phone that's so dangerous, however; it's the diffusion of the talker's attention. For me personally, I tend to zone out even when talking to a passenger beside me while driving. That's just as dangerous as talking on the phone for me.
None of this is an excuse to legalize robbing people for talking on their cell phones while driving, however.

Neo, you ignorant dolt, you referenced the " liberal strongholds in a direct reference to New York" If anyone has read any of your drivel over the past, it's clear that you would never call one of your beloved republicans a liberal. perhaps you are backtracking for implying that its perfectly safe to drive while talking on a cel phone, and we all should do more of it! you epitomize the "throw the baby out with the bathwater" mentality. Can't admit error, NIMBY, I'm right, your an idiot. That's you ever spout. BLAH BLAH BLAH

"it's clear that you would never call one of your beloved republicans a liberal"...
Wrong mikey, I've refered to 'rinos' many times.
"Perhaps you are backtracking for implying it's perfectly safe to drive while talking on a cel[sic] phone"...
Wrong mikey, I never implied it was safe to talk on a cell phone while driving.
"You epitomize the "throw out the baby with the bathwater" mentality"...
Wrong mikey, I just don't think the nannies have the right to tell us when it is ok to talk on the phone.
"Can't admit error"...
Wrong mikey, I was in error to even to respond to such a childish and ignorant rant as you just posted.

My question is, what have we, as a society, gained to talk about so much now that cell phones have evolved that we did not have to talk about previously.
