Regarding a recent reader's comments about the Grasshoppers, he is 100 percent correct. We now have a first-class facility in First Horizon Park, but Class A baseball is not where we need to be. A city the size of Greensboro deserves better.
It is my opinion we should now be in AA or AAA baseball. It would cost the owners more at the start to go to a higher classification, but it would pay big dividends in the future for both the owners and the city of Greensboro.
As it would take time for this change to develop, the owners should now be considering this change -- for themselves, the city of Greensboro and, above all, the loyal fans.

Id love to see it too, AA anyway. There are as many "has beens" in AAA as there are "gonna be's". However, I am unclear as to why the owners would make the move at this time. Much more cash outlay for them and the stadium is nearly packed for every game as it is. I really dont think more people would go to the games and I am unclear wether Gso's notoriously frugal citizens would pay more for tix. As a business owner why increase your investment for the same gross income? I dont even know wether the stadium is up to AA or AAA standards as is. Sure would be fun though.

Mick,
I gotta agree with you on this one.
I'll admit that I'm not a serious baseball fan. However, most who go to see the Grasshoppers would probably fall into that group.
It's more about entertainment. Can somebody tell me how AA baseball would be any more entertaining? From my ignorant perspective, it seems like what we have is actually MORE entertaining. I see a lot more hits and home-runs than I'm used to in big league baseball.
Now, on a totally different subject, I could tell a HUGE difference when the same issue was discussed in regards to hockey. The Generals could not hold a candle to the Monarchs who could not hold a candle to the Hurricanes. There was just no comparison.

I just wish they'd do something about the lame song on their radio commercials!

The question to be answered here is what does Greensboro want. If they are real baseball fans and want to see good baseball, then AA is a good answer. If they just want some good family entertainment and place for young adults to socialize and party, then what it has now is fine.
Greensboro doesn't impress me as a town that really cares about professional sports. The Bats were never supported when they played in War Memorial. The big fan turnout now can be attributed to the attraction of the new stadium. You never saw most of these people at the old stadium. So, now it's family outings or social outings at the Grandstand.
The test will come when the attraction of the new stadium wears off. What will happen then? My educated guess is that moving to AA, if the team could find and afford such a franchise, would not be a good investment for the team. If there is any interest in seeing a higher level of play, then moving to a High A league, such as the Carolina League, would be sufficient. Such a franchise is more affordable and provides a good level of play. Being in the Carolina League would also provide a great Triad rivalry between Greensboro and Winston Salem.
