Medical care in Canada isn't so great, either

To those suggesting Canada's health care is great, I have news for you. I have a daughter who has lived in Canada for 30 years and has a dual citizenship. If you need to see a doctor there, you go to a clinic, which she compares to a visit to an emergency room here on a Saturday night. She just waited 18 months to have surgery for a major rotator cuff tear. They don't get in a hurry up there.

Once, she had a growth on her foot and was concerned. The doctors there would not do anything. While she was visiting me, I took her to my family doctor, who, after examining her foot, made her an appointment with a foot specialist. He recommended that a biopsy be done. She went back to Canada, told the doctor there what the American doctor said, and he immediately did a biopsy.

Oh, and by the way, the free health care is not really free. She and her husband pay a monthly fee to the government for their health care. If you want to believe "Sicko," go for it. Just keep in mind who made the movie and his purpose for making it.

Bob: You exposed your prejudice with "Just keep in mind who made the movie and his purpose for making it." That's like saying, "Yea, but he's BLACK."

Here's an alternative view.

Yeah Bob, everything your daughter has experienced is null and void because you mentioned the blimp and his 'movie'.

BTW, I'll bet that 'dual citizenship' is a dream come true if she ever decides to visit France, huh?

4.5 months waiting time from seeing a GP, to specialist visit, to surgery. For all the govt. run health care advocates, be careful what you ask for, you might get it.

When I've visited Canada, I've spoken with many people about their likes and dislikes of their country.

Most people who I talked to who lived there LOVED their health care. They also loved the fact that violent crime is so low there even in the larger cities.

I'm read several examples where there health care has problems. No system is perfect.

My problem with our system is simple. I have to pay big bucks for my health care and the return on my costs is pretty pathetic. Then I must turn around and pay big bucks for others to get free health care through medicare, medicaid, etc.

I know this sounds selfish and classist, but I truly feel that people who actually pay for their groceries, health care, etc should get to cut in line in front of people who don't.

I'm going to agree with NP. Every Canadian that I've ever asked about their health care system likes it. Now that's only 5-10 but that's my experience.

I talked to a man from Holland a couple of months ago & he told me he keeps dual citizenship just for the Dutch health care.

Our medical technology is the best in the world. The distribution system stinks.

I have friends in Germany who swear their healthcare is superior to ours. One of them would move their mother here to live, but she can't leave the excellent healthcare where she lives in Germany. I have no idea, but I do know that ours is truly screwed up and the medical profession and the pharma industry will NEVER reform themselves.

TLC, why should those two groups reform their selves? What would be the motivating factor/s? What would be the self benefit of doing so?

Shalom

Thread dead, but I do note N-P and tLC and Rufus all have talked to those with personal experences very different than the undocumented opinoins from others' ... hmmm
