I cannot find a copy of your ground rules for letters commenting on those running for political office, but as I recall, as a general theme, it stipulates no negatives. Therefore, it seemed odd to me that you printed a letter from Yvonne Kane from Asheboro that thoroughly trashed Elizabeth Dole (an example: "I consider her a Republican puppet").
Whether or not the statements by Kane have any merit, it seems to me you violated the spirit, if not the letter, of your own stated policy.
So, given the political bent of the editorial page of your paper, I assume your policy of no negatives applies only to Democrats or liberal candidates.

Editor's note: Here, in part, is what our election letters policy says: "Opinions about a candidate's fitness or unfitness are welcome; allegations of misconduct are not."

Surely this is the first letter Mr. Crouch has ever read in a Letters to the Editor column. Otherwise, he'd have seen plenty of vitriol about candidates of all persuasions. There is clearly enough begative to go around, and if he read the column for more than two days, I'm sure he'd realize he had missed the boat on this one.

Mike,
Surely you jest?
Elizabeth Dole is fast approaching the worst N.C. Senator award, but she has one more hurdle. She must overcome John East, better known as "Helms on Wheels". The guy was such a loser that he couldn't do a thing without Congressional Club approval. If you couldn't find out how he voted, all you had to do was check Jesse Helms votes. East either copied Helms or was absent from the vote. The Congressional Club was so desperate, they had to find a mindless person to run--then they "swiftboated" Robert Morgan, convincing North Carolinians that Morgan single handedly "gave away" the Panama Canal.
So, Dole is not the worst, but she's still alive and could easily overtake East for the number one dolt. Maybe she'll continue to call the Iraq War, the "Wah on Tara" and get laughed out of her seat! Or maybe she'll make so many public appearances, she'll torpedoe her own candidacy! She is without a doubt, as useless as tits on a man.

Anyone want to take the time to see if any NC Dems have ever voted in "lock step"? I havent the time or inclination to either verify TLCs above statements or my own assumptions.
No need to I suppose as we all know the ugly truth.

Has Dole announced her bid for re-election? If not, then why the whining about "...letters commenting on those running for political office,...?"
I thought the LTTE by Ms. Kane to be forthright. It sounds like dear ole Mike just cannot stand the heat in the kitchen! Remember what Harry Truman stated; "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!"
So Mike, I strongly suggest that you find the nearest exit from the Kitchen. Before the next senatorial election cycle, should the Carpetbagger choose to run again, it may get a lot hotter!

Darryl,
I think Dole will win easily.
If there is one thing you can count on with North Carolinians, once they elect somebody, they just keep on electing them until they retire, die, or get thrown in jail.
(see Earl Jones, Billy Yow, Jesse Helms, Jim Black, Mike Easley, Jim Hunt........)

"I think Dole will win easily"
Wow! That's funny. Terry Sanford died and Broyhill was appointed--he then ran and lost. The seat was also held by (R) Lauch Faircloth, who was defeated. It was also held by (D)Robert Morgan who was defeated.....Edwards did not run for re-election....need I go on?
Nit,
A statewide Senatorial election, with national consequences, cannot be compared to Earl Jones and Billy Yow. Clue: Billy and Earl are in tiny districts and as an aside, truly "represent" the people who live in those districts.

"need I go on?"
If I thought you'd really listen, I'd answer that question.
"Broyhill was appointed"
Kinda different than being elected, isn't it? Besides, Broyhill wasn't appointed because Terry Sanford died, was he? I thought that was John East who committed suicide. Could be wrong, though.
"Edwards did not run for re-election"? Well, it's kinda hard to win if you don't run.
Admittedly, not EVERYONE in NC is re-elected. But I've seen enough do nothings be re-elected numerous times to know that Liddy should be a lock.
