Paper should increase coverage of the arts

Greensboro has an active cultural life. In the music field, we have the Eastern Music Festival and a very good Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. Productive people are often drawn to communities by such attractions. It is good here, but it could be better.

Neither the festival and orchestra, nor the people who might patronize them, are well served by the News & Record's spotty coverage of their concerts in recent years.

I ask the News & Record to recognize its great potential as a patronizer and publicizer of the arts in Greensboro. Music reviews provide the best publicity, even (or especially) if they are sometimes critical. Please give us more of them.

Newspaper's try to keep their reader base high. If music reviews are determined to interest their readers enough to buy papers, they'll print them.

Here's the issue I've noticed. You seem to be okay with critical reviews. However, I've seen many, MANY letters that were indignant because the N&R wrote a critical review of a play or concert.

I heard an interesting distinction:

Newspapers and media in general publish information that draws readership that matches the advertising ... in otherwords when Chevy buys ads, the editors are more inclined to print that which the average Joe who likes Chevy's will want to hear.

The opposite is what we have falsely assumed:
Newspapers publish what's going on and then search for advertisers.

Very good point, James.

Isnt there an entire section devoted to arts, music, etc every week? I dont know if I would call the coverage of the EMF spotty. I seem to remember plenty of articles on EMF and Fringe events. Could be wrong. Hey maybe it's those $15-$30 tix... nah couldnt be.

BTW, James, the city manager and the Mayor's office must buy a LOT of ads.

;)
