« President's Iraq policy lacks credibility, honesty | Main | DARE program was positive influence »

Unannounced candidate evades election rules

Former Sen. Fred D. Thompson, R-Tenn., has not yet declared his presidential candidacy, and why should he?

He can dodge the election laws by simply having a Web site, solicit for donations and spread the word for friends to hold fund-raising parties and call into Rush Limbaugh about how great he is.

All of his fellow Republicans running must adhere to federal election laws which have not yet caught up to cyberspace.

Thus, he has been able to promote his positions and raise money while technically remaining a non-candidate.

Thompson can get all the exposure he needs on the reruns of "Law & Order." Maybe the other Republican candidates should demand equal time from NBC.

As long as he can be an unofficial candidate, he can rake in the money and not adhere to the federal election laws. He's got it going on. A guy that smart needs to be our next president.

Thompson hasn't broken any laws. This is sour grapes over a potential candidate's savvy in waiting to the last minute to declare his presidential candidacy.

Ronald, we have "a guy that smart" in the White House now; look where it has gotten the US!

Shalom

~

Hugh,
You are a funny guy! Thompson will be torn apart, not by Democrats, but rather by his own party. He's had too many wives to suit the "Family Values" crowd, and he's waffled on abortion, since he used to represent Planned Parenthood. He's an empty vessel, whose only claim to fame is being Arthur Branch on Law & Order. When the Republicans swoon over such nothingness, it really shows how desperate they have become.

Oh, and if they want to give credit where it is due, they can thank George W. Bush----you know, the "Decider".

For the political "junkies" out there, here is a great clip of Senator Larry Craig calling Bill Clinton a "nasty boy"!!

I love those "family values" Republicans!

`

There are no election laws being broken or evaded here. Sen. Thompson has the right to set up an exploratory committee. These committees have fewer reporting requirements than regular committees but they also have more requirements fundraising and spending than those committees. Sen. Thompson is still bound by the overall fundraising limits; moreover, should he announce, he will have to report who contributed to the exploratory committee.

He's playing by the rules as they are written.

I'm truly impressed by the creativity some people display in finding things to be outraged about. Having to declare one's candidacy a year and a half ahead of the election isn't one I would have thought of offhand.

`

Brian444,
You are so right on the money! That's why this letter HAS to have come from another GOP campaign. They are salivating at the thought of "swiftboating" Arthur Branch, I mean Fred Thompson. Hope he's not another closeted "sex deviant"!

`

Hugh is absolutely correct.

Meanwhile, DD - or "THE LIBERAL CANADIAN" - is as predictable as ever. Yell about family values, and teach his own to deny their citizenship - claim to be Canadian! Teach his own children to LIE!!! FINE family values!!!! Blame ANYTHING on those nasty Republicans!!!! USE CAPS when they are not NECESSARY!!!!!!

`

Reformed:
1. Are you a "reformed substance abuser"?
2. Are you a "reformed alcoholic"?
3. Are you a "reformed Jew"?

or are you just an assh_le?
From your rearing up on your hind legs, you must be apologizing for Senator Craig's "footsie" in the airport Men's room! One thing is for certain, you are an apologist for the "family Values" Republicans--bit dog barks first! :)

`

A family value footise in the men's room or a family value hummer in the Oval Office. Either way it's pathetic, unless you don't consider either one of them sex, then it's just moot.

Don't look for any meaningful replies from THE LIBERAL CANADIAN on the circumstances surrounding why he made his children lie, reformed. I've been querying for better than a year and a half now as to the reaction of the kids when he told them to don the Canadian flags and lie in order to deflect a few icy stares from the French. All you will get is jumbled gobbledygook like his/her retort to you or ask you about your trailer wheels. There will be no direct answer forthcoming...trust me.

As for Larry Craig, let's see if he survives the next election...if he makes it to the next election. The people who voted him in are not of the same mold as the liberals who re-elected the likes of Gerry Steed after he got caught playing the flute of a 17 year old page boy. Nor are they of the same cloth of those who keep electing Barney "My Boy Lollipop" Frank after it was revealed that his husband was running a male prostitution ring out of their nest.

The people who elected Larry Craig has morals...

Don't fear, neo, no meaningful replies are expected from TLCanadian. Just oh-so-predictable the name-calling. He continues to make Olympic-sized leaps jumping to conclusions about what someone "must" think. I will give him one thing, tho - he is very creative when it comes to blaming the administration for every problem brought up in the Letters column. Even a letter last week dealing with the recent golf tournament segued into a Bush problem! LOL!! (Where have we heard THAT before?!?!)

Here's a fine EXAMPLE of TLCanadian's posts:

Nic,
Go do a Dick Cheney and "F yourself"!

Wouldn't telling someone to "F yourself" be doing a Dick Cheney? Make up that little mind, TLC!!! LOL!!!

`

neo,
For one who is constantly critical of the school system, you certainly are a poster child for educational ignorance.
Example:

"The people who elected Larry Craig has morals..."

Guess your "bible school" edgeee Kashun didn't teech Ingleesh! LOL!
What a numbnuts!
------

reformed,
Go do another Cheney, then head up to Minnesota to the airport to look for your friends!

`

Like I said...trust me.

ANOTHER subject where you just don't get it, TLCanadian!! When you invite me to "Do a Dick Cheney & go F*** yourself" YOU are, of course, refering to the comment made on the Senate floor and recorded by the media. What you don't seem to understand is that YOU are the one emulating our esteemed Vice President! When you make the same invitation a SECOND time, I can only assume you have developed a great repsect for Mr. Cheney, since CONTINUE to emulate him. Welcome to the land of the thinking!! And by bringing Sen. Larry Craig's problems into the conversation, you continue to be predictable and go off subject! Thanks so VERY much!!!
