Davenport column was uncalled for and hurtful

I found the column, "Discipline deficit disorder reaches alarming rate," by Charles Davenport Jr. (Ideas, Sept. 16) quite hurtful. Please set the record straight that disorders such as ADHD, autism and Sensory Integration Disorder are on the rise at an alarming rate.

Parents of children with special needs work endlessly to teach their children proper behavior and self-control. We are making great progress, but our children's development is delayed -- hence the term "developmental delay." To suggest that beating our children (or any child) is an effective solution to a serious disorder is pure ignorance.

Also, attacking single mothers was an uncalled for statement of disregard toward women. We need community -- not criticism.

Davenport and the News & Record owe us all an apology.

... but isn't "Beat your Child so he will not be Spoiled" a verse from the Bible?

Who are you, Annette, Ms. Jesus?

Like most Davenport columns I knew this one would stir a hornets nest.

We went to a kids bday party last Sat. First time we've met this family, the kid is in the same class as my son. The mother of said kid told us he had acted up in school the previous day. She mentioned the kid has ADHD and was being medicated, just as nonchalantly as if she had said he had brown hair and was wearing a blue shirt.

I see Ms. Keisel's and Davenport's viewpoints. While I believe these disorders exist, I also believe some cases of ADHD are diagnosed and kids medicated for convenience without factoring in other options including discipline.

I don't remember Davenport mentioning autism, that is an entirely different animal than ADHD. Wasn't too familiar with Sensory Integration Dysfunction.

Ms. Kiesel, the only problem in this equation is Charles Davenport. Like so many others (in other media markets, etc.) Davenport is nothing more than a sound bite artist. There is a market for him in the N & R. That is why he is there. It is not about what he necessarily says, rather that that some want to read/hear what he mimicks.

Sadly, his mimicking more often than not hurts unknown people. You happen to be one of the "collateral damaged" this time around. For that, I am sorry.

Shalom
