The old jokes are usually, but not always, the best jokes

So at a preinaugural dinner Tuesday night, James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, stood up and announced that the creators of Spongebob Squarepants had enlisted the cartoon sponge in making a video with a message supportive of gay people. It's not clear from the story, but Dobson also appeared to be implying that they did so because Spongebob is gay.

The article goes on to explain that Dobson was laboring under a misunderstanding (although Dobson's spokesman said Wednesday that Dobson stands by his accusation anyway. Where have we heard that before?).

As it happens, I blogged about this issue more than two years ago on my personal blog, to wit: Spongebob Squarepants isn't gay. He's just, like, 10 years old.

It's a different character on the show, Squidward, who is gay.

I read the initial story in the NY times yesterday and like some other conservatives I was turned off by Dobson's quotes. However in 24 hours some of those in the blogsphere who had been critical were rethinking the whole controversy.

For a somewhat differnt take than the Times news story go to Toon Zone and read the opinion piece by Maxie Zeus, dated 1-21-05.

In any event ,I thought sponges reproduced asexually.

Once again, conservative pro-family Christian values are de-valued and misreprented in the main-stream press. Dr. Dobson at no point said Spongebob was gay. He was warning about the "We Are Family" video, which presents homosexuality as biologically and morally equal to heterosexuality - which IT'S NOT! But of course the media jumps all over Dr. Dobson and labels him another "crackpot Chrsitian". sigh.... Anyone still wonder at the emergence of the so-called New Media for TRUTHFUL reporting??? And I was hoping from more from thoughtful bloggers - perhaps more than a knee-jerk response to the New York Times and MSNBC... perhaps a little research and finding out the truth for themselves?
