Lex...This is a good example of why I didn't complete my Ph.D. and why I chose to be a reporter, rather than a denizen of the ivory tower.

No kidding. The best journalism training I ever got was from my English adviser. In his classes, you had to do the research for a 20- to 30-page paper ... and turn in a 5-page paper. It was even harder than it sounds. And some of my classmates found out the hard way that he could always tell when you'd only done 5 pages' worth of research. ALWAYS.
