Thoughts on current controversies

Using the power of an institution to insult people gratuitously over their religious beliefs is rude; for a journalistic institution to do so is unworthy and unethical. That said, refusal to do physical harm to someone strictly because of the ideas they express is a very wide, bright line separating civilized from uncivilized, and there can be no compromise on it.

For the record, any speakers at my funeral are not only welcome but are also encouraged to address the issues that were important to me in my earthly life. You need not even agree with me on those issues, as long as you fully and forthrightly acknowledge what my views were and the basis for those views. Being funny would be helpful but is not mandatory.

Also, there should be plenty of beer, barbecue and blues at the wake.

That is all.

I too feel that an individuals relationship with his God should be off limits for ridicule. Certainly NOT as a law, but perhaps an eleventh commandment. That said after listening to CNN'S 360 report last night it seems the Muslim world wish to control the worlds thinking and bend allto conform with their views. This we simply have to refuse to do. Not by printing silly and poor quality cartoons but with steadfast refusal to be intimidated on important issues.*********I really like your idea of a wake! I am of Russian decent and my grandparent’s generation certainly knew how to throw a funeral party. As a kid I was too young to participate and when I got old enough my parent’s generation had turned funerals into morbid and boring affairs.

Lex & Brenda,

I support your funeral ideas. My own personal agenda is to have mine early enough in the day so that the pallbearers can get in at least 18 holes before it gets too dark.

I can see it now, the First Annual Mad Dog Invitational. I wonder if Chrysler would agree to sponsor this magnanimous event?

I plan to BE the BBQ, though hopefully not too soon.

I'd do the same if I thought there'd be enough of me to go around....

I plan to supplement with Boston Butts. If I'm properly prapared, no one will tell the difference.

Sorry to see where you have taken down your personal blog. I enjoyed the exchanges even though you banned me several times. Beer, barbecue and blues.. yup, works for me.

So long,

Ralph

You guys! Though I have often in my life accused the male of the our specie to being closely related to Porky Pig I really don't think barbequed man would be a necessarily delightful culinary experience.

C'mon, Brenda -- it tastes like chicken!
