What's (love) bugging me today

Every time I feel justified in arguing that the newspaper industry is too understaffed/underfunded and is too doing the best it can with the resources it has, I run into a newspaper story like this.

Lemme help you out here.

  • Nobody but Lindsay Lohan and the people she sleeps with should care whom Lindsay Lohan sleeps with.
  • Nobody outside the entertainment bidness and her family and close friends should care about Lindsay Lohan, period.
  • Anybody who does care about Lindsay Lohan, whether or not he/she ought to care, almost certainly has better places to check for information on her than the Arizona freakin' Republic.

Yeesh. It's hard enough tryin' to keep this bidness alive without its trying to kill itself all the time.

Oh, so does my daughter. I just don't see where your average daily newspaper has any business devoting a staffer's time to her love life.

That's what we have CNN for.

Lex, I agree that story was not necessary in the newspaper, but if you had click on their home page you would have noticed that unlike the ingrown two Greensboro section News & Record they actually had some news of the world outside of their city limits.

Why, yes, they do. And if you go here to look at the front page of their print edition for today (Arizona Republic is 2nd from right on top row; put your cursor over it to make a larger image appear), you'll see one non-local display story (full story, rather than a brief, in other words) out of four. That compares with two non-local stories out of five on the N&R's front.

And as you know, we concentrate on local news because we can do it better than anyone else can (in economic terms, we have a competitive advantage) and because, as our market grows more and more wired, people can find that information elsewhere.
