Today's new albums
Not much in the way of new albums this week, but here are some "standouts":
Better Than Ezra: "Before the Robots" - I'm not sure who Ezra is, but they must not be very good. The band had a hit years ago, but has somewhat fallen off the radar screen in recent years.
Oasis: "Don't Believe the Truth" - It always amazes me that these guys can get together and make an album. Talk about disfunctional - these guys are the champs. They write a good song or two, but rarely can stay in the same room long enough together to put a concert on.
Kottonmouth Kings: "Kottonmouth Kings" - Something tells me there are at least 50 references to smoking marijuana on this album. But it's just a guess... It's probably more than that.

May 28, 2005CYN - Still charging forward
I still tell myself that they should have won "Battle for Ozzfest" on MTV. They were clearly the best band on the show.
If it weren't for a small town North Carolina band going against a major metro area in Texas - maybe they would have.
CYN (formerly Cynder) are one heck of a metal band. The band emits raw energy in its live performances.
I had a chance to see the band practice when I interviewed singer Ryan Camp a few months back.
They might practice in a small space, but big things lie ahead for the Triad-area group.
The band recently finished a tour with other bands from the show - Manntis and show winner A Dozen Furies.
The other day, I listened to their most recent CD - "Hide the Light."
I don't know if this is still available, but metal fans should check it out if it is.
"Shiver Syringe" is a good indicator of the bands abilities - especially singer Camp's range. From slow to fast, singing to screaming - it encompasses the whole range of style the band is capable of.
A DJ adds some samples here and there, giving a cohesion to the music.
After hearing the band live - they also fall into the category of being better live than on CD, and getting better with age.
"Hide the Light" gives a good impression of the guys' talents, but should only be an indicator of where they're headed.
Their name was changed for legal reasons, not because of any band member changes.
The band has the ability to slow things down, but usually comes charging on full-force.
The TV show was only a TV show - CYN has the talent to go far. They may not be on Ozzfest this year, but I'm sure a spot isn't far away.
Anyone interested in checking the band out around the Triad can find them here:
June 10 at Ace's Basement in Greensboro
June 18 Somewhere Else Tavern in Greensboro
July 9 Ziggy's in Winston-Salem
July 22 Somewhere Else Tavern in Greensboro

May 27, 2005Coldplay heading to Raleigh
I'm not a fan, but lots of people are.
So I thought I'd let you all know that Coldplay will be performing at Alltell Pavilion in Raleigh on Sept. 10.
Tickets go on sale on June 4.
For other area concert info, you can always check out Ziggy's and Cat's Cradle.

May 26, 2005Ziggy's update
Just got an email about Ziggys - apparently, the reason the outdoor music park shows were moved to the Millennium Center is because of noise complaints.
Pretty silly in my view, because a)} the club has been there for years; b) it's not in a residential area.

Idol winner
So, Carrie Underwood won the American Idol title. Not that I was a huge fan of Bo's - I did think he was the better singer of the two - but I'm not sure she was the best singer on the show.
First of all - she has no personality. Her one word answers are pretty bad, and most of the time when she is "singing" it's more like screaming.
Bo impressed me with his a capella song two weeks ago, but he was horrible this week.
Oh well, the fame will fade in a short time anyway - how many people will buy her album if it's steeped in country music?
Probably the same amount that bought Fantasia's or Ruben's R&B album.
There isn't a mass audience for these pigeon-holed performers.

May 25, 2005The Crue sues
Motley Crue is suing NBC saying " the network violated the group's free-speech rights and weakened its sales by banning it after Vince Neil used an expletive on the air in a Dec. 31 appearance on "The Tonight Show" a New York Times article states.
"We meant no harm, but it feels that we're being singled out unfairly," said Nikki Sixx, the band's bassist, said in the article. "This is a discrimination issue, pure and simple. All we've ever asked is to be treated like everybody else, which is why we're taking this action."
NBC replied by saying: "To ensure compliance with its broadcast standards, NBC has the right to decide not to invite back guests who violate those standards and use an expletive during a live entertainment program. The lawsuit Mötley Crüe has filed against us is meritless."
It makes me wonder how this will affect Tommy Lee's show this fall...

May 24, 2005No outdoor music park?
I noticed that all of the concerts that were previously listed as taking place at Ziggy's Music Park (the outdoor stage at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, have now changed to the Millennium Center in downtown Winston.
Hmmmm...
I wonder what happened?
I'll find out - and report back here as soon as I get word.

May 23, 2005New albums this week
Here's a look at some of the albums coming out tomorrow:
Audioslave - "Out of Exile" - It's not Rage Against the Machine or Soundgarden, but the band has their own identity which is pretty good. I was more impressed by "Cochise" than some of the slower ballads on their self-titled debut, but I was impressed all the same. Chris Cornell has a great voice and Tom Morello's guitar riffs are hard to beat.
Nikka Costa - "Can'tneverdidnothing" - I always saw potential in Costa's funky pop music, but she's never caught on to the masses. Of course, I've never heard an entire album of hers, so maybe there's a reason for that.
Bruce Dickinson - "Tyranny of Souls" - Is he anything without Iron Maiden?
Seether - "Karma and Effect" - This band had some potential, but fell off the radar screen a while back. Their new album could bring them back to the spotlight. Check them out in Winston-Salem in early June.
Sleater-Kinney - "The Woods" - One of those Pacific Northwest bands that people either love or don't understand. They're also playing Winston in the near future.

May 22, 2005CD Review: System of a Down "Mezmerize"

Release date: May 17
11 songs. 36 minutes.
The latest release from System of a Down is fast on two levels - quick in length and quick in the fast-paced riffs and drumbeats.
The so-called prog rockers conjure a speed-metal Frank Zappa for a few of the songs on their latest album, "Mezmerize."
"Revenga," "Cigaro," and "Radio/Video" are extremely Zappa-esque in their lyrics and style of delivery.
"Hey man, look at me rocking out, I'm on the radio," followed by a sing-song talking/riffing. It could easily be a Zappa cover.
The album's first single, "B.Y.O.B.," alternates between a speedmetal riff with a catchy "Everybody's going to the party have a real good time" chorus.
Don't miss the politically charged lyrics, however. "Why don't presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?"
System of a Down, while fun and kind of silly at times, they've never backed away from putting their message out there in the simplest of terms.
The album stays away from the repetitive (think "Bounce" from the album "Toxicity") and heads on a straight line forward to provide their best effort yet.
While it clocks in at a disappointing 36 minutes, its high energy pace doesn't leave you unsatisfied.

May 21, 2005Buckcherry update
Remember the band Buckcherry?
To me, they picked up the rock and roll torch where Guns N Roses dropped it off.
They were the hard rock that hard rock was supposed to be - drug-fueled, partying without a care and solidly written - back in the late 90s.
After a few albums, Josh Todd the band apparently fell apart.
Now, Todd is the singer of a self-titled band, Josh Todd.
Needless to say, they sound like Buckcherry thanks to Todd's scratchy, emotion-full singing.
Check out the album over at cdbaby. You can hear the whole thing online - listen before you buy.
It may be something the rock fans want to check out.

May 20, 2005They don't play everything
OK, I've already exposed the 98.7 Simon radio renaming as a big marketing scheme.
But now I thought I'd just complain that the radio is also guilty of false advertising.
They claim "we play everything."
I reply, "No, you don't."
If they truly do play everything, here's what I want to hear from them:
"New World Order" by Ministry
followed by "Goodbye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks
followed by "Yertle the Turtle" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers
followed by "St. Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast" by Frank Zappa
followed by "Breathe" by Faith Hill
followed by "Ticks and Leeches" by Tool
followed by "Rum Tum Tugger" from the Cats Sountrack
followed by "Human Cannonball" by Butthole Surfers
followed by ... do I make my point?
Simon says they play everything, but they really don't.
And they can stop playing Milli Vanilli, too.

May 19, 2005Apparently. . .
Just some ranting on music:
- Britney Spears has a reality show, and apparently people actually watched it.
- Apparently, no one cares that to most people, 50 Cent's lyrics, "I'll let you lick the lollipop" are more offensive than Janet Jackson's right breast.
- Apparently, Gwen Stefani singing "If I were a rich girl" (to the tune from "Fiddler on the Roof") when she actually is a rich girl, is somehow cool.
- Apparently, blasting your car stereo at 120db on the highway so that everyone can hear you listening to Huey Lewis and the News is entertaining. (Actually, in some ways, it is.)
- Apparently, MTV has just started its 100th station - this one based in Africa. It makes me wonder how many of them actually play music.
- Apparently, I don't mind that the new System of a Down album is only 36 minutes, because it's pretty intense.
- Apparently, American Idol contestant Bo Bice doesn't need a band, because his a capella singing was downright impressive and better than half of the singers out there today.
- Apparently, I once saw Whitesnake in concert, but I am not willing to confirm or deny those rumors.
- Apparently, I went to school with Jon Bon Jovi's little brother. It's true, and the girls loved when Jon would pick him up in his Porsche.
- Apparently, I've run out of ideas about today's music.

May 18, 2005News and notes
Dave Matthews Band was No. 1 on the Billboard Charts this week - beating out Nine Inch Nails - last week's No. 1.
I'm not surprised by the sales - people love Dave Matthews. However, I was kind of disappointed by the album, and don't expect the album to stay on top for a long time.
Kylie's cancer
Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has postponed her upcoming tour.
The 36-year-old Australian songstress is said to have an early form of cancer.
Opening for the Stones
Opening acts for the upcoming Rolling Stones concerts include Pearl Jam, Maroon 5, Black Eyed Peas and the John Mayer Trio.
No word on the Charlotte opener yet.

May 16, 2005Today's new albums
System of a Down - "Mezmerize": I was really looking forward to this album, and then I found out it's only 36 minutes long. I hate when bands do that. Hype your album, but only give us a hint instead of the whole thing. The whole thing would be the second half of the album - "Hypnotize" - which comes out this fall.
Juliette and the Licks- "You're Speaking My Language": I was surprised by this one. Read my review for more of my thoughts.
Toby Keith - "Honkytonk University": I'm not even going to pretend I know much of anything about Toby Keith. I think he's some country guy that hates the Dixie Chicks - is that right? Oh well, he's got a new album out either way.
Van Morrison - "Magic Time": I'm sure it's not "Brown Eyed Girl," but it's probably better than a lot of other albums being released these days.
Insane Clown Posse - "The Calm": Do people really listen to this band? I heard them once in college, and laughed because I thought it was a joke. Apparently, they've got some pretty hardcore fans though. Oh well, to each their own.

May 15, 2005CD Review: Juliette and The Licks "You're Speaking My Language"

Release date: May 17, 2005
Hearing that actress Juliette Lewis has formed a band may conjure images of everything from Russell Crowe's Forty Odd Foot Grunts or Bruce Willis playing harmonica.
As they said in Monty Python's Flying Circus, "Now for something completely different."
Juliette and The Licks are what The Donnas try to be - a punk rock band that's actually punk rock.
Lewis' voice has that smoky, growl to it and her backing band is actually good.
I'm never one for the actors/actresses forming bands, but Lewis has the right idea. Rock for rock's sake.
If you've seen her movies, you know she's got an edge to her that fits right in to the rock and roll lifestyle.
Aside from the somewhat cheezy, "This one goes out to the entire world" on the beginning of the title track, Juliette and The Licks stays away from cliches.
It's fast-paced, as well. Twelve tracks in 40 minutes. This is what punk rock in 2005 should sound like and what Courtney Love wishes she was.
Even when Lewis slows down (momentarily) on "I Never Got to Tell You What I Wanted To" or "This I Know," it's that Mallory Knox voice that draws you in. (Knox would be her character from "Natural Born Killers.")
Juliette and The Licks base their live performances on pure raw energy, and if you've seen any photos of her performing, or clips of their performances, you'll know that's an accurate statement.
Lewis holds nothing back. Check out the band's Web site for a listing of upcoming TV performances and concerts.

May 14, 2005Stones sold out
If you didn't get your tickets to the Rolling Stones earlier today, your luck ran out.
The show is sold out. While online sales sites currently say, "No tickets currently available," apparently they're just waiting until Monday to say "Sold Out."
I really wanted to go, and planned to get tickets, but I forgot.
Whoops.
At least on Friday I got tickets to see John Fogerty and John Mellencamp. Sounds like it'll be a fun show.
I spent my morning waiting for DirectTV to come and install a satellite dish that won't pick up a signal.
So I lost on two fronts. I'm still stuck with overpriced Time Warner Cable (that probably went up three dollars a month since I started writing today's blog entry), and the Rolling Stones concert is sold out.
Ugh.
I guess it's one of those days.
Tomorrow, you can expect a review of the Juliette and the Licks CD.
Monday, look for a preview of the week's albums.
Until then...

May 13, 2005Pig-pickin, Juliette and more
The annual Pig-Pickin show is this weekend at Ziggy's. If you're a rockabilly fan, head on over there, cause it's got a heck of a lineup including Greensboro's The Tremors.
And hey, it's only $7!
Juliette rocks
I got an advance copy of the new Juliette And the Licks album in the mail, and boy, was I shocked.
There's been a big buzz about this band that features Juliette Lewis as the singer.
I thought, "Sure, just another actress trying to be a singer." But this is good stuff. Stay tuned this weekend for a review of the album.
The Melon boys
Ever wonder what happened to some of the guys from Blind Melon. Well, two of them produced and are part of the band on the new album by Anna Nalick.
It's a good pop album with a female vocalist that lands somewhere in the neighborhood of Jewel.
Maybe I'll review that one too.
Ozzfest hits the Triad, kind of
The boys in Curse Your Name, formerly Cynder, that were featured on MTV's "Battle for Ozzfest" have a bunch of dates scheduled for the Triad area.
Check out the low-fi version of their Web site for more info on where they're playing.

May 12, 2005Coming to Ziggy's
Once again, Ziggy's will have it's outdoor concerts this summer in "Ziggy's Music Park."
On Friday, June 3, Crossfade, Seether and No Address will perform there in what should be a pretty solid rock show.
On June 29, Sleater-Kinney will perform on the outdoor stage.
The indoor lineup over there is shaping up quite nicely too, including Long Beach Shortbus on June 15. The band includes some former members of Sublime.
We don't have an amphitheatre, but we do have an outdoor music venue that's on a slight incline offering great views of the stage.
See ya there!

May 11, 2005News and notes
Well, Anthony Federov just got voted off of American Idol, so it's all going according to plan....hahahaha
OK, I didn't mean that to sound so sinister. I just meant that I thought he'd be the next to go.
Bo should make the final two - but whether his competition is Carrie or Vonzell remains to be seen.
The Stones coming to N.C.
Apparently, Mick Jagger thought a nice birthday present for me would be to play in North Carolina the day after my birthday.
So, The Rolling Stones will play in Charlotte on Oct. 21. Tickets go on sale this weekend.
NIN hits No. 1
I was surprised that Nine Inch Nails hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart, but then again - who was the competition?
Mariah Carey? 50 Cent? People are searching for good rock music with a pith helmet and a pick axe and they finally found it in "With Teeth."
For my review of the album, check out the upper right corner of the blog's homepage.
That's all for now...

May 10, 2005SOAD on SNL
System of a Down was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this past weekend, and for anyone who watched their performance (their first of the night), they may have noticed a censorship slip-up.
SOAD performed their latest single "B.Y.O.B." which includes a few "f-bombs" throughout the song - five to be exact.
Guitarist Daron Malakian decided to throw in an extra one for good measure, and the censors never saw it coming.
It was one of those moments when I thought to myself, "Did I hear what I think I just heard?"
Of course, it's not as big of a scandal as Janet Jackson's breast being exposed (pardon any puns), but I'm sure it was big to the FCC.
In my opinion - it's around midnight on a Saturday that this happened. If kids aren't in bed, shouldn't we be asking the parents why, instead of blaming a rock band for a word?
Chesney gets married
I read the headline of Renee Zellweger getting married and quickly assumed it was to Jack White of The White Stripes.
Wrong! But thank you for playing.
The Oscar-winning actress married Kenny Chesney, whom she met in January.
Actress marries rock star after four months of dating. Yeah, that has "successful marriage" written all over it, doesn't it?

May 9, 2005New albums this week
Here's a quick list of some of this week's new albums:
Dave Matthews Band "Stand Up" - Obviously the big name of the week. I'm sure it'll be near the top of the bestseller list in no time. I heard part of the first single this morning, and it sounds pretty good to me. It's gotta be better than Matthews solo record which, to me, was somewhat disappointing.
John Cena & Trademarc "You Can't See Me" - Does anyone even have plans to buy this "rap" album by a WWE wrestler? I hope not.
Robert Earl Keen "What I Really Mean" - I think he releases an album every 4-6 weeks. Is this guy the hardest working man in music today, or what? Every time I turn around, he's got a new album out.
Stephen Pearcy "Fueler" - The former lead singer of Ratt has a new album out. I can hear the crickets chirping now.
Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation "Mighty Rearranger" - Unless it's a Led Zepplin reunion, no one really cares.
Weezer "Make Believe" - I still haven't decided if this band is underrated or overrated. There's a huge buzz about them every time a new album is released, but it's from a small group of people.

May 7, 2005Idol chat
First, let me say that I'm glad that Scott Savol and his arrogant attitude were voted off of "American Idol" this week.
I'm not sure who I want to win, or if I really care, but I'm glad that it's not going to be Savol.
This guy was just a few steps from William Hung on the annoying scale.
In other Idol news this week, some talentless hack named Corey Clark has come out to say that he had an affair with Paula Abdul.
Personally, I doubt any of this is true.
1. Why would Abdul want to date someone that looks like Sideshow Bob of "The Simpsons" and sounds like Micheal Jackson?
2. See above
3. Why didn't ABC have an interview with anyone other than Clark? Don't talk to other contestants that have no clue what happened. Talk to a security guard, Abdul's publicist... someone. This is the reason people say journalists are biased.
4. Clark is trying to pitch a new CD and a tell-all book. Ding ding ding. We have a winnner! Until this past week, people would have said, "Corey who?" Now, people know his name. If you have plans to buy this clown's CD or book, you should be ashamed of yourself.
5. How about this? -

Notice any resemblence?
Forget "American Idol," this guy is giving "The Simpsons" a bad name...

May 6, 2005Getting to Carnegie Hall....or Ziggy's
"How do you get to Carnegie Hall...or Ziggys?"
"Practice, practice, practice."
I always wondered what bands around the area did for practice space.
The guys from CYN (formerly Cynder) that were featured on MTV's "Battle for Ozzfest" practice in a small shed near the home of singer Ryan Camp.
Apparently, other bands will practice in storage sheds. Check out today's story by Allison Perkins.
Many times while driving down Wendvoer, I've heard them practice.
Perkins offers the inside story. It's a great read.

May 5, 2005Where are the shows?
We're hitting a lull in concerts in the Triad at the moment, or so it appears.
Over at Ziggy's the usual names are stopping by this month - Robert Earl Keen, Pigface, David Allan Coe, Gavin Degraw - but the Coliseum has hit a slow spot.
They had the "big" names of Ashlee Simpson and Motley Crue recently, but a check of their upcoming shows lacks a big name (outside of local American Idol Fantasia).
I guess it's the outdoor concert time of year - when people flock to Raleigh and Charlotte's amphitheatre's to see popular artists such as Dave Matthews, Velvet Revolver and others.
I've often wondered why Greensboro doesn't have an amphitheatre, and I'm not sure on the answer.
Is it the lack of land? I doubt it. Other amphitheatres are not in the city limits - most are out of the way, but easy to get to from the Interstate.
Is it due to competition? I don't think this is the case either. Competition is a good thing. Wouldn't three venues be better than two? Maybe it would attract concerts that haven't been to the Carolinas before...
My guess is it's because of attendance worries. Charlotte will pull in people from all over to their shows, as will Raleigh. But would an amphitheatre here bring enough people from outlying areas, and would enough Greensboro residents show up?
Judging by attendance at past concerts in the area, it really depends on the band.
Attendance at the Yes concert in Greensboro was disappointing. Even Motley Crue didn't sell out the coliseum.
I guess the idea of an amphitheatre in Greensboro would be a great novelty, but the reality seems impossible.

May 4, 2005Random notes
There have been some good discussions about anonymity, pen names, civil discussion and defamation on The Editor's Log. After discussions and pondering, it has been decided that a name and e-mail address are required to post a comment on our blogs. I hope this doesn't prevent someone from posting here.
On to the music...
- Is anyone else tired of the Micheal Jackson trial yet? I can't believe it's only about halfway over.
- Scott or Anthony should be voted of American Idol tonight.
- Some ex-Idol contestant claims he had an affair with Paula Abdul. I think he's the only one who believes his claim, too.

May 3, 2005CD Review: Nine Inch Nails "With Teeth"

Release date: May 3, 2005
Finally, after a long waiting period, Nine Inch Nails has released a new studio album.
It's first since 1999's "The Fragile," "With Teeth" offers 13 solid rock tracks that will make any NIN fan happy.
It's what I expected - enjoyable, but not the band's best work. I wasn't expecting the almost-disco beat on "Only" but the chorus of "You Know What You Are?" is one of the best (from Trent) I've heard in a while.
More mellow than previous releases, the album does find its moments of energetic rage - "You Know What You Are?"
Those two remind me of early NIN songs. While NIN also finds a softer side on "Right Where It Belongs."
I'm sure the more I listen to the album, the more I'll like it - and I like it enough already.
It's no surprise that the band is selling out shows all over the world. If they visit your area, be sure and check them out. I've seen the band a couple of times, and have never been disappointed.
Dave Navarro continues his glowing comments about their recent Vegas performance.
It's not Trent Reznor's finest work, but it's one of his better albums.

May 2, 2005Ice turns to slush
I caught the latest edition of VH1's "Remaking" this weekend. Have you seen this one?
The show which first madeover Vince Neil before the current Motley Crue tour, decided to take on Rob Van Winkle - aka Vanilla Ice.
So, Vanilla Ice signs up to be on the show, but then refuses to take part in most of the "parts" of the show.
How about a new hairstyle? "No, thanks."
How about a new wardrobe? "No, thanks."
How about some trust classes? "Not interested."
How about some new lyrics? "New music, ok. New lyrics, no thanks."
How about a better stage presence? "No thanks."
Of course, his response was more often, "I don't want to throw you under a bus...."
So, the show was fairly entertaining, but drew mixed emotions.
In the beginning, I was thinking, "Give the guy another chance. If he truly was a 'creation of the industry' he deserves a second shot." And I wanted him to come out with a really great song.
In the end, it was just Rob Van Winkle. He didn't want to change. He didn't want another chance. He just wanted an hour on VH1, or so it seems.
I was left with one question - "Why did he sign up to be on the show, if he didn't want to participate?"
If you watched the show, let me know your thoughts.

May 1, 2005New albums this week
A quick rundown of some of the albums coming out this Tuesday, May 3:
Mike Doughty - "Haughty Melodic"
The former frontman of Soul Coughing is a heck of a songwriter and a great acoustic musician. I believe he's now playing with a full band. I caught his show at Ziggys (along with a total audience of about 15) and was impressed by his solo live show. He's also a heck of a nice guy to interview - another in the long line of former heroin addicts.
Limp Bizkit - "The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1)"
What happened? Limp Bizkit was once at the front of the rap-rock movement, and then the lights slowly dimmed. Their first two albums were fun and unique, but the band then turned into a cliche of themselves. Their last album was only remembered - for better or worse - for their cover of The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes." Now original guitarist Wes Boreland is back in the mix. Hopefully, they'll return to the raw energy of the past.
Nine Inch Nails - "With Teeth"
When a new Nine Inch Nails album comes out, it's almost like a Star Wars movie. Fans wait for years until the next one, and when it's finally released, you're either blown away or sadly disappointed. Early word is that "With Teeth" is a return to form for Trent Reznor. It's not instrumental - it's full-blown Nine Inch Nails. The first single "With Teeth" reminded me of "Pretty Hate Machine." I'm hoping for good things from this one.
Joe Perry - "Joe Perry"
The Aerosmith guitarist is putting out a solo album with covers including The Doors and Woody Guthrie. Something tells me it won't come close to an Aerosmith record.
