Super Stones

The Rolling Stones have been named as the performer for the upcoming Super Bowl.

If you didn't catch their ongoing "Bigger Bang" tour, you missed out on a fantastic show that is apparently set to break all the records.

If the Stones retire after this tour, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. They'll surely go out on top.

This week's new releases (11/29)

Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:

Ryan Cabrera "Live at the Wiltern" - If you're not 14 and female, and buying this album because "you think he's cute," you need to take a good, long look in the mirror.

The Darkness "One Way Ticket to Hell...and Back" - The Darkness' 15 minutes ended about 6 months ago, once people realized that they were more annoying than talented.

INXS "Switch" - It's not Michael Hutchence, it's J.D. Fortune. Oh...yippee.... I still don't know how he won that contest.

Dave Matthews Band "Weekend on the Rocks" - More live shows from Red Rocks. It's jammy, but not enough to make you want to twirl.

Shakira "Oral Fixation 2" - Now, in English...

As always, the bands with animal-related names releasing albums this week (nonstop since July 12) - NONE! The streak ends at 20 weeks.

The new trend - bands with "evil" names releasing albums this week: 13 Ghosts, The Darkness, Rancid Vat

CD Review: Avenged Sevenfold "City of Evil"

A7x.jpg
Release date: June 7, 2005

Their album may have hit shelves in June, but Avenged Sevenfold are just starting to hit the airwaves with the first single off their major label debut, "City of Evil."

"Bat Country" sounds like four songs in one - melodic, metal, punk and a combination of all three.

The band is doing their best to bring back the guitar-heavy metal of the past, and they're doing a good job - if you can get past the goofy names.

The band consists of - M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, Johnny Christ and The Reverend. I'm serious.

A double-bass drum line, raspy vocals and intricate guitar work comprise a number of the songs - it sounds like a combination of Guns N Roses, Metallica and Green Day.

Their songs can become to sound alike after a while, but it's mostly because of a similar drum beat and length - most of the 11 songs clock in at more than 5 minutes.

A7X is doing their best to bring back the old school in a new format, and their off to a good start with "City of Evil."

A present for DMB fans?

Do you know a big Dave Matthews fan?

Do you have a lot of money, and don't know what to do with it?

Why not by that person a ticket on the Dave Matthews & Friends Carribean Cruise?

Tickets start around $1,000, but there's a lot of great bands on the cruise.

It's pretty cool - if you can afford it. Send me a postcard.

And the winner is...

Wondering who won at last night's AMAs?

Find out here.

I'd love to give my take on the awards, but I didn't watch. So maybe that's my review.

I didn't watch the American Music Awards because I don't see the point of all these awards shows.

Sure, there is prestige with a Grammy, but other than that, it's getting ridiculous.

The Billboard Music Awards, the radio awards, the "nobody bought the album, but we think they're cool" awards....

I've had enough of them.

Another awards show...

The American Music Awards are on tonight.

If you were wondering who the nominees/awards are, you can check that out here.

Personally, I think the show has an identity crisis. Check out the nominees for best pop/rock album: Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson and Green Day.

Good luck to local girl Fantasia, who is up against Mariah Carey and Destiny's Child for favorite Soul/Rhythm & Blues album.

Yes, you read right, Mariah is up for best album in both categories. Figure that one out...

This week's new releases (11/22)

Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:

Enya "Amarantine" - I'm guessing it's a little difficult to understand, and also kind of celtic.

Ricky Martin "Life" - Martin's 15 minutes were up about 5 minutes ago, but we'll see how this one - with a handful of guest appearances - turns out.

John Mayer Trio "Try!" - I hope this means that John Mayer is in a trio, and not that there are actually three of him...

Nelly "Sweatsuit" - Calling all suckers - if you already have the album, and are a fan of his, you have to buy it again for new songs.

The Rolling Stones "A Bigger Bang" - See Nelly...

Scott Stapp "The Great Divide" - Stapp leaves Creed, falls on to a minor label and sings about Jesus. Nothing new here...sounds like where Creed would have been by now anyway.

System of a Down "Hypnotize" - The counterpart of "Mezmorize" finally hits shelves. Keep your eyes open for a review here soon.

This week's bands with animal-related names releasing albums this week (since July 20) - Chamillionaire, Lil' Tweety, Part Chimp

Walk the Line out today

Need something to do this weekend? Have a few hours to kill?

The new Johnny Cash bio-pic, "Walk the Line," is getting great reviews.

Simmons slapped with lawsuit

For Gene Simmons of Kiss, it's all fun and games to brag about sleeping with more than 4,600 women - until one of them sues you.

A woman whose photo was shown during a VH1 documentary is not too happy about having her past revealed to the world.

OK, I understand that she's upset, because she has kids and she doesn't want them to get the wrong impression of her.

But, um, hello?!? You slept with Gene Simmons! Was this formerly a source of pride? A bedtime story you shared with the kids before it was portrayed in a bad light?

Also, your name was never mentioned in the documentary. People only saw a picture. Now that you've filed a lawsuit - everyone knows your name, your age and where you're from.

People will sue for anything these days - and usually without thinking it through.

What I want to know is, who do I sue for allowing that bug to fly in my mouth while I was laughing at this lawsuit?

And the winners are....

I'm not going to try and pretend to analyze any of the winners of last night's Country Music Awards.

I tuned in long enough to hear Lee Ann Womack say, "I love country music!" about 5 times, and I turned the channel.

If you, on the other hand, are just dying to know who won - click here.

I will note that Sugarland didn't win. I can't say I'm a Sugarland fan, but I do think Jennifer Nettles has an incredible voice and her solo albums are worth checking out.

Aerosmith/Lenny Kravitz

Aerosmith is going on tour with Lenny Kravitz, and they're making a stop in Greensboro on Jan. 21.

Pre-sale tickets went to sale this morning at 10 a.m.

Ticket prices are $55, $85 and $125. So, of course, I had to go for the $55 tickets.

I caught Aerosmith when they hit the Coliseum with Kiss a few years back and they put on a great show.

I haven't seen Kravitz before, but I've been a fan since the days of "Let Love Rule."

Rock on!

This week's new releases (11/15)

Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:

Big $ Rich "Comin' to your City" - I don't like country. I watch ESPN. I don't understand these guys...

Bowling for Soup "Goes to the Movies!" - It's an album of covers of TV themes, original songs and a cover of Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time." Do people actually wait to buy this one?

Jimmy Buffett "Live at Fenway Park" - If he's smart, he'll leave out the country songs.

Mariah Carey "The Emancipation of Mimi - Platinum Deluxe Edition" - If you bought the original, you'll be annoyed that she's re-releasing it with a few new songs. (That is, if you liked it the first time.)

Elton John "Peachtree Road: Collector's Edition" - See Mariah Carey, above.

Madonna "Confessions on a Dancefloor" - If the confessions include reasons she regrets starring in "Swept Away," people will line up.

Moody Blues "Lovely to See You, Live" - My "What year is this?" for this week.

Spongebob Square Pants "The Yellow Album" - It's CDs like this one that make me wonder why I'm not a millionaire in the music business. If Spongebob can make an album...

Carrie Underwood "Some Hearts" - She's a little bit country...

As always, the band's with animal-related names releasing albums this week (nonstop since July 20) - Calico System, Pitbull, Snapper and Mad Glock Click,

Going to the movies? Be careful

50 Cent's movie "Get Rich of Die Tryin'" opened this weekend, and people are just dying to see it.

After someone was killed in a movie theatre lobby in Pittsburgh, the Loew's theatre chain has pulled the movie from its theatres.

It's just another example of how killing people ruins all the fun...

Wake up, "Harry"!

Daniel Radcliffe (the actor who plays Harry Potter) doesnt like American punk music like Green Day because "it all sounds like Good Charlotte."

Wh-wh-what?!?

Um, Daniel, you need to get your head out of your robe, and out from under that wizard hat and wake up - Good Charlotte is nothing close to original music. They also came after Green Day.

Of course, before I get annoyed at the comment, I should mention that Radcliffe likes Franz Ferdinand.

AMA Collaborations

Wondering when you'll finally get to see Pharrell perform with Gwen Stefani? How about Cyndi Lauper and Sarah McLachlan? Bow Wow, Omarion and Ciara?

Yeah, neither am I, but those are some of the lineups for the American Music Awards this year (Nov. 22).

This week's new releases

Here's a look at some of this week's new releases (11/08):

Kenny Chesney "The Road and the Radio" - Maybe he was too busy working on his new album to spend time with Renee?

Neil Diamond "12 Songs" - It's produced by Rick Rubin, but it still qualifies for the "What year is this?" for this week.

Peter Gallagher "7 Days in Memphis" - That's right, it's an album from the "O.C." actor. No word on whether or not his eyebrows have a solo.

Cyndi Lauper "The Body Acoustic" - OK, so maybe there's more than one "What year is this?"

The Mars Volta "Scabdates" - It's a live album from one of the best bands I've heard in a long time. Look for a review up here soon.

Limp Bizkit "Greatest Hitz" - The track listing includes covers of "Lean on Me," "Bittersweet Symphony" and "Home Sweet Home." Instead of wasting time recording covers, the band needs to get to work on something decent for a change.

Nonpoint "To the Pain" - One of the most underrated hard rock bands these days. From what I've heard so far, the new album is some of their best work in years.

Twista "The Day After" - I bet he raps really, really fast... I also bet the novelty won't last too much longer.

As always, the bands with animal-related names releasing albums this week (Going since July 12, 2005): Diane Cluck, Dogs of Winter, Grizzly Bear, Tarantula A.D.

A Genesis Reunion?

Phil Collins says he's open to a reunion of the orginal Genesis in a story over on Yahoo.

Now, when I say original Genesis, I had to read further into the story - yes, he means with Peter Gabriel singing.

Unbelievable!

I would love to see this happen.

Early Genesis is simply incredible, theatrical music that stands the test of time.

If you're a fan of the era, or Peter Gabriel, check out "Trespass," "Foxtrot" or "Nursery Cryme." You'll be glad you did.

It just keeps getting worse...

Spatula?

Did he really just say spatula?

Yes, in the continuing travesty that is R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet," he actually sings the word "spatula" - not once, but at least three times.

Why do I do this to myself? Why do I sit through this idiocy? So I can rant about it on here, I guess.

I can easily say that "Trapped in the Closet" (Volumes 1 to however many there are) is THE WORST song/story/soap opera ever written and recorded.

VH1 is dedicating half-hour blocks to this garbage.

The latest portion - Volumes 6-8 - not only included singing about spatulas, but also included a Southern accent.

When R. Kelly sang/talked about her, half the time he used an accent, and half the time he didn't.

It also teased the next parts where he'll be playing another part.

So, why am I watching?

It's like a horrible movie. You sit there and wonder, "At what point did a music executive say, 'Oh yeah, that's a great idea!'?"

Please, make it stop...and let there be no copycats.

If I had a Hammer...

If you're sitting around reading this blog while perched on top of a teetering mound of money, wondering what you could buy, I have the answer.

MC Hammer's publishing catalog is up for sale.

You'll get 50 perecent of "Can't Touch This" and 90 percent of "2 Legit 2 Quit."

Personally, I'd like someone to buy it so no one has to listen to those songs again...
