CD Review: Avenged Sevenfold "City of Evil"

A7x.jpg
Release date: June 7, 2005

Their album may have hit shelves in June, but Avenged Sevenfold are just starting to hit the airwaves with the first single off their major label debut, "City of Evil."

"Bat Country" sounds like four songs in one - melodic, metal, punk and a combination of all three.

The band is doing their best to bring back the guitar-heavy metal of the past, and they're doing a good job - if you can get past the goofy names.

The band consists of - M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, Johnny Christ and The Reverend. I'm serious.

A double-bass drum line, raspy vocals and intricate guitar work comprise a number of the songs - it sounds like a combination of Guns N Roses, Metallica and Green Day.

Their songs can become to sound alike after a while, but it's mostly because of a similar drum beat and length - most of the 11 songs clock in at more than 5 minutes.

A7X is doing their best to bring back the old school in a new format, and their off to a good start with "City of Evil."
