Worst of 2005

5. The Killers
I'm sorry, but this band had to be one of the worst things in the past few years, if not just 2005. I lived through the 80s. I don't need to hear them again. And listen to the lyrics - it's not like they're headed for greatness. They'll be gone by album #3.

4. CD Re-release trend
Why do artists release an album, and then 3 months later, release it again? Apparently, it's to frustrate and annoy their fans. I don't need two copies of every song on the album. Next time, just save those new songs for the next album, or release a cheaper EP.

3. Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, etc.
I've had enough of your reality shows. I've had enough of your lip-synching. I've had enough of your talentless CDs. Stop trying to make a quick buck, you talentless hacks. This means you, too, Paris.

2. She's b-a-n-a-n-a-s
Gwen, come up with better lyrics. I have no idea why Gwen Stefani's song "Hollaback Girl" is nominated for major awards, but I guess it's because there's nothing good out there? I bet if she did a duet with the Killers, people would think it's the next Nirvana, unfortunately.

1. Leave him there!
Poor R. Kelly is trapped in the closet. I say, leave him there! This has to be one of the all-time worst songs ever recorded. Don't "sing" about spatulas. Don't "sing" about twisted love triangles. I say "sing" because he's really just talking. I can't believe I've seen people singing along to this song. I can't say it enough - this song is horrible. Why are people buying it?

What is she thinking?

In the ever-amusing relationship that is Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, the singer has come out and said she would like another child - "soon."

"Why?" you ask?

Because she hopes it will help smooth things over in her rocky relationship.

Are people really that naive?

The only thing another child will do is help bring more offspring of Federline into the world - which is the last thing we need.

Can this be real?

At first, I wondered if this was a real site.

And then I thought, even if it isn't, are there really 2,551 people interested in being Kevin Federline's friend on myspace.com?

I thought there might be two or three - and that number probably didn't include Britney herself.

Perhaps Federline himself created 2,550 profiles and made them his friend to look more popular?

Either way, the way people defend and support Federline in the comments is pretty amusing.

Shakira in the Middle East

Apparently, Shakira's album cover (below) for "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" was a little too "naked" for consumers in the Middle East, and went through a Photoshop transformation.

Now, instead of a leaf bikini, she's wearing a leaf dress.

Hilarious, if you ask me.

Personally, I was a little shocked that they left the ankles exposed.

I understand the need in other cultures to keep some things covered, but why not create a different album cover completely, instead of creating "Shakira standing in shrubbery" cover?

This week's new releases

Here's a look at some of the new releases for Dec. 27:

Delirious? "The Mission Bell" - The band's name also answers the question - "What do you have to be to release a CD two days after Christmas, and a few days before New Year's Eve?"

Happy Holidays!

Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend!

I will be back Monday - unless there's breaking news...or something else to make fun of.)

Congratulations

Well, things usually slow down around the holidays, so...

- Congratulations to Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale who will be proud parents next year.

- Congratulations to Elton John for his marriage.

- Congratulations (?) to Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney for their divorce.

Bonnaroo - Mark your calendars

Looking for a present for that special someone - how about a trip to Bonnaroo?

The dates have been announced for the fifth-annual music festival.

June 16-18 in Manchester, Tenn. - mark your calendars.

Britney's lawsuit

I had so many comments about this case - and then I thought that the ideas of greasy lovemaking may make people nauseous.

Do people really care if Britney and her husband made a videotape - and if they do care, do they really want to see that mess in action?

Britney Spears has fallen down into a trashy pit next to Tonya Harding, and only one of them - most likely the one with the biggest lead pipe - is going to come out on top.

Our time would be better spent wondering why people are buying/wasting their money on R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" CD and DVD.

This week's new releases (12/20)

Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:

Foxy Brown "Black Roses" - With the recent news that she's deaf, I wonder when this album was recorded, and if she heard the final product.

The bands with "scary" names releasing albums this week: None - I guess we'll find a new trend in the new year.

Congrats to Bono

Bono was named as one of Time magazine's "People of the Year" along with Bill Gates and his wife.

That's great, but then I thought - what's the point? I mean, I know it's an honor, kind of like winning an Oscar, but is this really anything more than a pat on the back to some famous people who have more money than God?

Being named "Person of the Year" doesn't put food on a starving man's plate or clothes on someone's back.

The only thing it may do is sell more magazines...

Simpson collapses

Ashlee Simpson collapsed after a performance in Tokyo.

I could make a joke, and say maybe it's because she wasn't used to singing, but I'll refrain....

Foxy addresses hearing problem

I mentioned Foxy Brown's hearing loss not too long ago.

The singer has come out to address the problem.

CYN video casting call

Remember Curse Your Name, formerly Cynder, from Battle for Ozzfest? Well, they're still around, and recording their new album, "Where Angels Fear to Tread."

They're also casting for their upcoming video, "Spark of Life," and are looking for a male and female actor from the Triad.

Find out more info here.

Scraps for the can

Here are a few news bites/scraps for the can:

Tre Honored
A show at the Blind Tiger tonight will feature 11 bands paying tribute to Trey Stylez who was killed just more than a week ago.

MTV New Years
Shakira and Kanye West are scheduled to perform at this year's MTV New Year's special.

The only part of that show worth watching is the midnight cover song.

Solo Floyd
David Gilmour - best known as the singer/guitarist of Pink Floyd - will release a solo album and head out on tour in the early part of next year.

With any luck, he'll bring the rest of Floyd with him and do the tour right. Of course, that's probably just wishful thinking.

This week's new releases (12/13)

Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:

Beck "Guerolito" - Why re-release "Guero" with a new song or two (like so many other artists), when you can simply remix the same songs...

Bo Bice "The Real Thing" - Something makes me want to yell "Free Bird" every time I see the American Idol runner up.

This week's bands with scary names releasing albums: Youngbloodz

What would Stapp do?

I can see the bracelets now - "What Would Stapp Do?"

And, apparently, if you're in a bar, the answer is - "Get in a fight."

The former Creed singer with the religious-heavy lyrics got in a fight with 311 recently at a hotel bar, and now, Stapp has released a statement saying, "I didn't start it."

OK, maybe you didn't throw the first punch, but apparently you insulted someone's wife and were a billigerent drunk.

And that isn't the first time, either.

And the nominees are...

Wondering who is nominated for a Grammy this year?

HERE are the nominees.

The Garage staying open?

Not too long ago, it was announced that The Garage in Winston-Salem was planning on closing its doors.

Now comes word from owner Richard Emmett that the club will stay open - at least until April.

Great news for music fans who have come to appreciate the venues intimate setting.

The e-mail from Emmett said:

Music Lovers and Friends of The Garage,

Thanks again for all your support these last few weeks. It has really meant a lot. More than you’ll ever know. So much so, that I’ve decided to postpone the closing of the Garage until at least April pending my attempt to sell a minority interest in the business in order to raise money to pay back some debt and up fit the bar for draft beer and liquor.

Special thanks to all those of you who have expressed interest in buying shares in what some of you have so kindly called "a Winston institution." Yes, a true institution, a home for crazy’s like you in me who still hold fast onto our idealism, believing that even in today’s America "art for the sake of art matters" and "dreams are what nourish our souls."

I know your probably saying…alright already…is he closing it or not. Well believe you me, I ask the same question of myself most every day, running the numbers through my head, and trying to figure out a way to balance the art with the commerce.

Bizarro world of marriages

I feel like this is an episode of Superman, and we've entered the Bizarro World - a world where everything is opposite.

Why?

Eddie Van Halen is getting divorced from his wife of 24 years, Valerie Bertinelli.

At the same time, Eminem claims he is getting back together with his ex-wife and may remarry her.

It's a strange world we're living in. I'm glad I'm here to enjoy the ride.

December 6, 2005

I'm sorry, "What?"

Apparently, Foxy Brown is deaf.

The strangest part of the story is not that she's deaf, but that "she refused to discuss the possible cause of the problem."

Why? Unless you wanted to know what happened if you jabbed yourself in the head with a q-tip - on both sides - and that was the cause, why not talk about how it happened?

Another for the "Whoops" files

I don't want to "speak ill of the dead," but this is just plain stupid - as in not smart.

A budding rap star put a pen gun to his head, thinking it was jammed, and pulled the trigger, killing himself.

At what point, at any time, is putting a gun to your head and pulling the trigger a good idea?

Fallen Idol....contestant

American Idol contestant Julia DeMato was busted for drugs and DWI. Whoops!

I guess things aren't all "Clay Aiken" (or even "William Hung") for all of the contestants of the Reality Show.

Triad loses young talent

The Triad lost a young talent over the weekend at a house party.

There's a story about it on gotriad.com and one at news-record.com, so I won't re-tell the details.

However, The Five L's show this weekend at Ziggy's will be a tribute to Tre Stylez if anyone is interested.

This week's new releases (12/06)

Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:

Funkmaster Flex "Car Show Tour" - My "What year is this?" for this week.

Korn "See you on the Other Side" - I'm interested to hear how the band, whose guitarist left "for Jesus," has regrouped.

Lindsay Lohan "A Little More Personal" - Personally, I couldn't believe she released the first album. Now she has the audacity to release another. Oh well, I guess they'll make for good gag gifts during the holidays.

Now in its second week - the band's with scary names: Mt. Eerie

I actually found something worse than Lindsay Lohan and Ashlee Simpson.

Need to kill time?

There are 75 bands in this picture - can you find them all?

For example - the ones I saw right away:
1. The Eagles
2. Guns N Roses
3. Blind Melon
4. Gorillaz
5. Smashing Pumpkins
