Jennings heading back to Ziggy's
Shooter Jennings is set to return to Winston-Salem.
He'll play at Ziggy's on March 9. His last show there was packed, as I expect this one to be.

Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:
Gilby Clarke "Gilby Clarke" - Is he already making preparations that Rockstar Supernova will fall apart?
Harry Connick Jr. "Oh My Nola" - New Orleans native Connick releases new album which one would hope would bring some bayou flavor.
Norah Jones "Not Too Late" - She'll be in Greensboro soon...
Katherine McPhee "Katherine McPhee" - Yet another album from an 'Idol' finalist.
As always, the names of bands with animal-related names who are releasing albums this week: Matching Mole, Skinny Puppy, The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Yardbirds

January 27, 2007Concert review: Army of Anyone
Army of Anyone
Jan. 26, 2007
The N Club
Greensboro, N.C.
There's no mistaking the barbaric yawp of Richard Patrick. The front man for Army of Anyone and mastermind behind the band Filter has a distinct vocal howl that instantly can ignite a crowd.
Patrick and the rest of the Army of Anyone compatriots didn't disappoint at the N Club on Friday night.
The crowd got their fill from Army of Anyone's debut album, as well as a few selections from the Stone Temple Pilots and Filter catalogs.
Sure, Patrick had to give the crowd a little encouragement to make more noise and repeatedly asked the lighting guy to "tone it down" but the music was hard-charging and struck the right chords.
The band appeared relaxed as they kicked off their 12-song set with "It Doesn't Seem to Matter."
Three songs in, the band kicked open the door to their past by playing the Stone Temple Pilots hit "Vasoline."
Patrick's voice is in a different tone than original STP singer Scott Weiland, but he pulled it off nicely.
Of course, the Filter tunes sounded as good as possible with Patrick at the helm.
The brothers De Leo, Rob and Dean, did their best to show off their musical prowess throughout the night.
The biggest surprise was the energy and power of drummer Ray Luzier. If anyone doubted that he belonged in this "supergroup," he proved the nay-sayers wrong in a short amount of time.
Some people may have wanted more STP, or more Filter, but it was a night for Army of Anyone to show off their new music in their hour-and-15-minute set.
They played a perfect balance of past and present that was capped off with "Hey Man Nice Shot."
That's why I say, "Hey guys, nice show..."

Roth back with Van Halen
Billboard.com is reporting that Van Halen is set to sign a 40-date tour with LiveNation...but not with Sammy Hagar singing.
That's right - David Lee Roth will be singing with the band for the first time in 20 years.
As previously reported, Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang will be playing bass instead of Michael Anthony. People think it's a big deal, but, come on now...it's just bass.
Alex Van Halen will still play drums.

January 24, 2007News briefs
Daughtry hits No. 1
"American Idol" finalist and former McLeansville resident Chris Daughtry has hit No. 1 with his band Daughtry on the new Billboard 100 chart.
He edged out the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack by just 130 copies.
Our boy's all grown up - in the music biz, that is.
Lil Jon prepares solo album
In an attempt to prove that he can say more than "Yeahhhhh!" Lil Jon is working on a solo album.
Wait, you mean he wasn't a solo artist before?

January 22, 2007Rage reunites
I heard it on Sirius radio over the weekend, and now it's confirmed on Billboard.com.
Rage Against the Machine is reuniting to play Coachella.
They first wrote about it here.
Audioslave has been on hiatus since frontman Chris Cornell is working on a solo album and a planned tour.
It'll be interesting to see what happens in the future for all involved.

January 21, 2007This week's new releases (1/23)
Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:
The Good, The Bad & The Queen "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" - Another group produced by Danger Mouse and featuring the singer from Blur/The Gorillaz.
John Mellencamp "Freedom's Road" - He still puts on a great live show, and it's nice to see he's putting out new music.
Saliva "Blood Stained Love Story" - Their first two albums found success, but the last one was a bomb. It'll be interesting to see how this one does, though the first single, "Ladies and Gentlemen," sticks to a formula they've used before.
As usual, the bands with animal-related names releasing albums this week are: Animal Collective, Rob Crow, Deerhoof, Ralph Falcon, New Young Pony Club

January 19, 2007Daughtry to play 3 N.C. shows
Local "American Idol" contestant Chris Daughtry and his band, Daughtry, will be headed back to the Carolinas in March and April.
His official Web site lists dates as:
March 23 - Downtown Greensboro
April 12 - Charlotte
April 13 - Raleigh

January 18, 2007New site for Ziggy's
Ziggy's in Winston-Salem has a new Web site up - and it's a nice improvement from their last one.
While it has the same info as before, they're also adding some new features - a photo gallery and forum among them.
There will also be a "Burn Lounge" where you can download music from artists that play at the club.
A nice new addition for one of the Triad's best live music venues.

January 17, 2007"American Idol" Week 1
So, "American Idol" started last night, and I have to say that I'm not impressed.
Usually, there is a Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry or Fantasia that sticks out from the first auditions.
Of course, it's early in the game, but there's no one to keep an eye on so far.
The entertainment value has been pretty good though, if a little mean.
But hey, after all this time, people should know that they don't hand you flowers if you aren't good.

January 16, 2007World's Biggest Karaoke Contest kicks off
Tonight is the season premiere of "American Idol," the world's biggest karaoke contest.
Sure, there's a live band, instead of a machine playing the music (during the final rounds, at least), but it's basically a karaoke contest.
Play guitar? They don't care.
Play harmonica? They don't care.
Just get up and sing.
First, they have to make fun of the horrific singers who think they have talent, but are strangely confused.
Let the fun begin, once again...

January 15, 2007This week's new releases (1/16)
Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:
Aerosmith "Classics Live" - They need to write a new album and stop releasing all these live ones already.
Bif Naked "Purge" - She keeps releasing new albums with little fanfare. I'm surprised she hasn't done better in the music world.
Crowded House "Farewell to the World" - A live CD of the band's last concert from 10 years ago.
Diana Ross "I Love You" - The "What Year Is This?" album of the week.
The Smithereens "Meet the Smithereens" - A CD of them playing Beatles songs. Yes, you read that right.
Sorry, no bands with animal-related names releasing albums this week.

January 11, 2007Cobain did it first
Sure, people are talking about Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy and how he started a fight at a recent concert.
Well, Kurt Cobain did it first.
Of course, after hitting the security guard in the head with his guitar, the security guard hits him back.

January 10, 2007Richard Patrick interview
I just got off the phone after a 25-minute interview with Army of Anyone singer Richard Patrick (also the frontman of Filter).
I can easily say it was one of the best interviews I've done - easily in the top 10.
Patrick was laid back, easy to talk to and extremely knowledgeable of the music business.
His passion for music is easily felt when you talk to him.
Aside from the usual questions about the upcoming tour, the new album and the future of Filter, he also talked about how much the music business has changed from the days when he was in Nine Inch Nails, just starting out.
It's going to be tough to cut it all down to a 12-inch story for the paper, but it will get done.
So, thanks go to Richard. I can't wait to see the show.

Richard Patrick ?s
I'm interviewing Richard Patrick, lead singer of Filter and Army of Anyone, today at 1:30 p.m.
If you have a question you'd like asked, let me know and I'll see what I can do... as long as it's a valid question.

January 9, 2007Fall Out Fight
So, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz wants everyone to know that he protects his friends - especially when there are big security guards involved.
He jumped into a fight between security and one of his roadies at a show last weekend.
The best part, someone caught it on video and put it on their myspace page. (Note: Language may not be suitable for some viewers/readers.)
Seriously, if Wentz and the security guard went one-on-one, I'm sure the outcome would be much different.
After all, it's easier to fight when you're not in the middle of an audience.

January 8, 2007This week's new releases (Jan. 9)
There's not much on tap for this week in the way of new releases.
The Grateful Dead "Live at the Cow Palace: New Year's Eve 1976" - It's great to see that there are still new live CDs coming out.
Bands with animal-related names releasing CDs this week: Kelvin Mockingbird, Superpumas

January 7, 2007"I'm From Rolling Stone" Week 1 (Part 1)
Tonight was the premiere of "I'm From Rolling Stone" on MTV. The show follows a few interns as they vie for a position as a writer for the famous music magazine.
As someone who would love to write for Rolling Stone, I was curious to see what the show was like.
I only could get through the first 10 minutes though...
When editor Jann Wenner calls 23-year-old Krishtine, her answer is "For reals?" (Since when did words like real and hell get an 's' added on to them?)
Another contestant, Russell (the favorite), tells Wenner, "Later, skater."
Ugh...
I know it's a music magazine, but some professionalism is called for when you're offered the chance of a lifetime - one that other people would kill for.
Maybe when the show replays on Tuesday night, I'll give it another chance.
For now, as a journalist, I'm disappointed.

January 4, 2007News of the day
While Fox has announced that "The O.C." will end in February, there's also some interesting entertainment news on the music front:
Smash!
News has been out for a while about the Smashing Pumpkins reuniting.
Now, Billy Corgan has made some comments on the band's myspace site.
As an article over at billboard.com says, it's only known that Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain are in the band.
As the myspace site says, "Who's in the band?" "Not telling."
Hopefully, the band will return to their old hard-edged sound instead of the poppy, mechanized version we heard on "Machina."
Reunited?
Rumors are also swirling that a reunion of Police could be just around the corner.
I think Sting's solo career has slowed in recent years, so this would be a nice pick-me-up for all involved.

January 3, 2007Spears' album doomed?
A post by Cindy Adams says Britney Spears' new album is on hold because the record label isn't pleased with early results.
Apparently, they're also worried that the former teen queen has been partying too much and harming her image with fans.
So, they don't know if they should dump her or just dump the first few tracks.
Personally, I find it sad and humorous.
I think Britney's career hit a dead end when she got married to a backup dancer, a la Jennifer Lopez.
Spears was never a singer - she was an entertainer. She lip-synched her way into the hearts of millions, but never had the vocal talent.
Now, she's got to create something new. Her greatest hits album bombed, as did her ex-husband's album.
It's going to take a lot more than a snake around her neck this time.

January 1, 2007A New Year's Request
There's not much in the way of new music this week.
Instead, I'd like to make just one quick wish...something that everyone in the music business can adhere to easily.
A New Year's Resolution for the music company masses:
No more mediocre music.
For the bands, from the fans, for everyone involved... Give us good music.
Throw the yodeling out the window, put the generic gangsta rap on the side, get Lil John to scream something other than "Yeah!" while holding a pimp cup, give me a quartet that can simply rock the masses, let emo sit at home and cry.
Stop trying to sell to the masses your Nickelback pop, and give me music that means something.
Give me music that I'm not tired of after hearing the song three times.
Give me music that makes me scream out - "Check out this band!!!!" or "That song is incredible!!"
We've been waiting for "the next Nirvana" for far too long. Come out of hiding. Now, is the time.
Well....
I'm waiting....
