American Idol - Week 2 Men
So, here's the deal - every week, the judges talk about song choice, but no one seems to get it.
Note to "American Idol" contestants: Think back on past years. What do you remember? Chris Daughtry singing "Walk the Line" or "What a Wonderful World"? Katherine McPhee singing "Over the Rainbow"?
Why do you remember those songs? Because of good song choice, originality and a fantastic overall performance.
Keep that in mind before you sing these fluffy or random songs that no one will remember one hour later let alone a season later.
That being said, here are my thoughts on the guys' performances - which were better than week one, for some:
Phil Stacey - Apparently, he didn't get the message about singing a good song. There was no spark to his performance.
Jared Cotter - It's tough to tackle Marvin Gaye, but he did ok with it. I thought it showed power, range and soul and he looked comfortable singing it.
AJ Tabaldo - Smooth vocals, but I have no idea what the song was. Again, not a memorable performance.
Sanjaya Malakar - Sounded like he was forgetting words. His vocals were weak and off-key. He should try a Michael Jackson song with that tone.
Chris Sligh - Has a good tone to his voice, but he was kind of mumbling. He has pretty effortless range and power and should sail through this round.
Nick Pedro - The raspy vocals kind of worked and it had a good jazzy feel. It wasn't risky, but it was a solid performance.
Blake Lewis - Didn't have the right tone for the song, but was ok with the falsetto...just ok. His beatbox/scatting was the only highlight - but is that really singing?
Brandon Rogers - Another wrong key and odd song choice. He tried to make it his own, but it didn't work.
Chris Richardson - He was rapping more than singing, but it worked for a more modern-day vibe. It was an odd song to dedicate to his grandma, but it worked. Finally, someone unique.
Sundance Head - This is the best he's sounded since the first auditions.
At the bottom: Phil Stacey, Sanjaya Malakar, Brandon Rogers

February 26, 2007A chat with The Dead...
I just finished a 30-minute interview with Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead/Rat Dog.
Aside from being an honor to speak with him, it was a fascinating conversation.
He talked about the creation of setlists, the Dead receiving a lifetime Grammy recently, writing new music, politics and more.
Two of the more interesting tidbits - his experiences on Shakedown Street where he would often go in costume to avoid being recognized and a story of performing in Egypt surrounded by thousands of mosquitos, bats and bedouins with rifles.
Now I'll have to cut down 30 minutes of conversation into a story short enough for print... it won't be easy.

This week's new releases (2/27)
Here's a look at some of the new releases for this week:
Billy Joel "All My Life" - A new CD single from the Long Island native.
Nine Inch Nails "Live: Beside You in Time" - It's a live DVD, but after seeing their concert last summer, I'm sure it's worth watching.
Tenacious D "The Pick of Destiny" - The Tenacious D movie comes out on DVD...
Because there's usually more than one of them, the bands with animal-related names releasing albums this week are: Blackbyrds

February 24, 2007CD Review: Harry Connick Jr. "Oh My Nola"

Release date: Jan. 30, 2007
16 tracks: 66:37\
It's no surprise that Harry Connick Jr. has been doing a lot to help his native New Orleans ever since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city.
With "Oh My Nola," Connick looks at some of the musical roots of the cajun city.
In the CD's liner notes, Connick gives some info on why he picked some of the tracks, or why he wrote others.
From the classic Allan Toussaint song "Working in the Coal Mine" to the zydeco standard "Jambalaya (on the Bayou)," Connick rearranges the familiar to make them his own.
There are some old-school arrangements, and some new ones, but the album is mostly fun and jazzy making one think of beniets and crawfish and everything in between.
There are slower tracks such as "Let Them Talk" and new takes on old songs such as "Hello Dolly."
Connick offers a great sampling of New Orleans music that plays as a modern best of.

February 23, 2007No surprises on "Idol"
I can't say I was surprised by any of the eliminations last night on "American Idol."
Nicole Tranquillo hurt herself with a horrible song choice. Whether or not it was too "urban," as Simon said didn't matter. It just wasn't a good choice.
Amy Krebs wasn't the worst of the bunch, but she had a few bad notes and her vocals were weak enough to be voted out.
Rudy Cardenas wasn't bad either, but wasn't great. Actually, none of the guys were really great, so it was anyone's guess who was going to be voted out.
Paul Kim was a little too soft vocally. It wasn't horrible, but again, wasn't great. I wasn't a fan of all the vibrato, anyway.
For a full list of the top 24, go here.

February 22, 2007Tool rescheduled
So, I got an e-mail this morning that said Tool was playing in Winston-Salem in April from tickets.com.
Then I checked another e-mail and found out that the drummer tore his bicep and the tour will be rescheduled.
Let's hope they're still coming to the Carolinas!

Third time's the charm
OK, this is getting silly. Britney Spears is headed to rehab for the third time.
Good luck, but I suspect she'll be out before the week is up...

"American Idol" - The women
Finally, some singers showed up for "American Idol."
The 12 women performed much better than the men. While it's anyone's gues which two men are leaving, the women's competition is a little tougher to pick.
For most of the last two nights, I've agreed with Simon.
Following is the rundown of my comments on each of the 12 female performers...
Stephanie Edwards kicked off the show with a confident performance that was reminiscent of Fantasia.
Amy Krebs was just ok. She hit a few bad notes and could be gone this week.
Leslie Hunt was relaxed, but she didn't have enough power for the song. She needs to do something more bluesy.
Sabrina Sloan had confidence and power in her vocals.
Antonella Barba was off key and tackled a song that didn't fit her voice at all.
Jordan Sparks had some odd reverb in her vocal. Her performance was ok - not great, not bad.
Nicole Tranquillo made some strange faces while she was singing. It was too urban - I just didn't like the song.
Haley Scarnato was too "Broadway." It was too old for her, and too much vibrato.
Melinda Doolittle was oversinging. She'll get to the next round, but it was just too much.
Alana Alexander was a little pitchy and gave an ok performance.
Gina Glockson sang well, but picked a song that was too old for her.
LaKisha Jones was oversinging. The judges loved her, but I thought it was a little too over-the-top.
While Chris Sligh is just about the only guy I'd be surprised to get eliminated, here's my thoughts on the bottom few girls...
Up for elimination - Amy Krebs, Antonella Barba, Nicole Tranquillo, Haley Scarnato and Alana Alexander.

February 21, 2007Go Kevin, go!
I never thought I'd be pulling for Kevin Federline, but I'm impressed.
After his ex-wife, Britney Spears, left rehab twice after less than 24 hours in one week, an emergency hearing will take place in court tomorrow.
The saddest part - there are rumors swirling that Spears has tried to commit suicide twice in the last few days since cutting off all of her hair.
This girl needs psychiatric help - now!
It's sad to see former pop stars fall faster than a brick.
Best of luck to all involved...

Van Halen - postponed
So, I'm sure a whole handful of people were really excited about a Van Halen reunion with David Lee Roth.
The rest of us said - it'll never happen.
Well, the rest are right. The tour that hasn't happened has been postponed indefinitely.
Posted by jeffhahnedisabled at 7:32 PM
The reason for the shaved head?
Interesting. It's being reported that Britney shaved her head because Kevin Federline was threatening to have her hair tested to find out what drugs she has been using.
That's the first thing that I've heard that makes any sense about this girl and her odd behavior.
Oh, and for the second time, Britney left rehab in less than 24 hours.

"American Idol" - The Men
OK, so "American Idol" kicked off last night with the top 12 men singing.
I wondered if anyone would stand out, and after two hours of average singing I got my answer, "No."
There's no Taylor Hicks. There's no Chris Daughtry. As expected, the only memorable performance - mildly memorable - was Chris Sligh.
I usually give contestant-by-contestant comments, but no one stood out.
Rudy Cardenas wasn't enunciating, Brandon Rogers and "Sundance" Head were both weak vocally, Paul Kim has too much vibrato and Chris Richardson started in the wrong key.
Nick Pedro was whispering, Blake Lewis had no personality, Sanjaya Malakar was boring, Jared Cotter hit some bad notes, AJ Tabaldo was off-key, Phil Stacey was just ok.
I found myself agreeing with Simon Cowell all night.
The song choices were also horrible.
Let's hope the girls show some kind of talent, or it's going to be a long, long season.

February 20, 2007Idol men sing tonight
While there's no front-runner after the first rounds of "American Idol," a better idea of who to beat may come to light after tonight's round.
The top 12 men will sing tonight (women tomorrow).
Entertainment Weekly has a poll up online for the top 20 contestants here.
It's no surprise that Chris Sligh is at the top - his dry sense of humor and solid vocal ability have made him the early viewer favorite.
Now let's see how he does under pressure.

February 19, 2007Dead-ly interview

This week's new releases
Here's a look at some of the new releases for Feb. 20:
The Dixie Chicks "Shut Up and Sing" - Since they won so many Grammys recently, I thought it would be worth mentioning the DVD that's coming out this week.
The bands with animal-related names that are releasing albums this week are: Bunny Rabbit, Ducks Deluxe, El Coyote Y Su Banda Tierra Santa, Elephant Man, Fish, Kittie, Minus the Bear, Pigface,

February 17, 2007Hi, help? It's me, Britney.
In a move that can only be called, "Crazy," or a call for help, former pop queen Britney Spears shaved her head.
Yep, that's right. Ms. Spears dumped FedEx (Kevin Federline), was seen without underwear, partied hard, entered rehab for less than 24 hours and then shaved her head.
It's nice of her to do all she can to make sure Federline wins a custody hearing. No judge is going to hand kids over to be raised by crazy.
It's a trainwreck...a sad, sad trainwreck. I liked her better when she was barefoot in gas station bathrooms.
Check the YouTube video of bald Britney here.

February 16, 2007A new supergroup trend?
So, first it was Chris Cornell leaving Audioslave, and now another big name is leaving a "supergroup."
Now, Ian Astbury has announced that he's leaving Riders on the Storm - formerly The Doors of the 21st Century - to reform Cult.
Am I smelling a trend?

TRL cancelled?
It was only a matter of time before MTV tried to get rid of the last bits of evidence that they were a music channel.
In a move that will have teenagers crying and the Backstreet Boys wondering what happened to their kingdom, justjared.com is reporting that the network has decided not to renew TRL.
To this I say - what took them so long?

February 15, 2007Cornell quits Audioslave
Wow - I didn't see this one coming...
With a solo album due in May, and siting personality and musical differences, Chris Cornell has "permanently" quit Audioslave.
He told Billboard.com, "This is something I don't want to do anymore."
The other three members will reunite with Rage Against the Machine singer Zach De La Rocha at Coachella in April.
I'm sad to see this happen, as I thought Audioslave was a solid music producing group.
However, if this means a revitalized Rage - I'm all for it.
Bulls on Parade!

Good enough for Grammys, not Idol
The winner of the "My Grammy Moment" on Sunday - Robyn Troupe who sang with Justin Timberlake - was also a contestant on "American Idol" this season.
The result: She was eliminated on Tuesday's show.

Idol names top 24
Well, they've been narrowed down to 24, as America's karaoke contest has gotten in full swing.
Entertainment Weekly has ranked the top 24 here.
My thoughts: No one stands out. In previous years, you had the "ones to watch" - Fantasia, Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks. You knew they would be in the top 5, let alone the top 12 or 24.
This year, no one singer looks or sounds like the next Idol.
In fact, I was pretty surprised last night as I watched part of the show. Some people who hadn't sung well but were "marketable" were kept in, while others who had performed better were given the ax.
It just goes to show that it's a business.
It will be interesting to see how these next few months play out.

February 12, 2007This week's new releases (2/13)
Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:
Van Morrison "At the Movies" - Yep, Van Morrison is releasing a CD of 19 songs from movies, including "Comfortably Numb."
The bands with animal-related names releasing albums this week are: Chicken Legs Weaver, Iceage Cobra, Seafood

February 11, 2007The Grammys - End
It's winding down now. All that's left is Album of the Year, Rock Album of the Year and a performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers perform "Snow (Hey Oh)." It's nice to see an old-school rock group that still around. It's stillodd to see them so toned down compared to the old days. There's a message on the speakers behind Flea, but I can't make out what it says. Confetti flying down around the theatre. The sign says "Love to Ornette Coleman." Coleman is one of the innovators of jazz.
Al Gore (?) and Queen Latifah are presenting the award for Rock Album of the Year. The winner is Red Hot Chili Peppers. I love that Chad Smith said, "Start a rock band. We need more rock bands!" I couldn't agree more.
Scarlett Johansen is recording an album? Oh please, as much as I like her as an actress, these Hollywood types need to stop getting into the music business. Ugh
Album of the Year - The Dixie Chicks. Wow - this was definitely their year for the Grammys.
In summary - there weren't too many awards. It was chock full of performances. I was surprised by the wins by the Dixie Chicks, but happy for them just the same. I expected a bigger tribute to James Brown. I think there was a good variety of winners and there weren't really any "lowlights" to the night.
Find a complete list of winners here. Keep up with CNN's coverage here.

The Grammys - Hour 3
The Best New Artist winner is Carrie Underwood. Wow - the Idols are taking over. I'm surprised (a little) that she thanked Simon Fuller and "American Idol." Good for her...
Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci at music awards?
Smokey Robinson performs. Wow...a nice surprise. His voice sounds good for "Tracks of My Tears." Not as powerful as it was, but still solid.
Lionel Richie now singing. He seems prime for a comeback - I've seen him all over recently, but he's always singing his old songs. He needs to hit the airwaves with something new and hip.
Chris Brown performs. Did he fall down the stairs or slide? He's doing a step show - "Stomp the Yard" - with an odd Halloween mask on. His vocals sound a little off - maybe it was too much dancing? Actually, he's not singing much at all - he's too busy dancing. The backup singers are handling the chorus. He's not singing all of the verse either - more like singing random words and notes. It's a performance...not much singing here.
Christina Aguilera singing "It's a Man's World" - interesting choice, but she's doing well with it. She's got impressive vocal power, so it's a fitting tribute... James Brown video in the background. Jamie Foxx shown in the crowd smiling and nodding.
Two teenagers are showing off their musical abilities on the piano and violin.
In Memorium... including June Pointer, Denny Doherty, Syd Barrett, Billy Preston, Gerald Levert, Ahmet Ertegun and, of course, James Brown. Chris Brown comes out and does a dance tribute to James Brown... a cape is then placed over a microphone stand.
Rihanna and ... David Spade? announce Ludacris with Earth, Wind & Fire and Mary J. Blige. I'd like one rap song, heavy on the music and soul, please. Ludacris throws his jacket into the crowd - I hope he emptied the pockets. It was a good song with meaning.
James Blunt dedicates "Beautiful" to Ahmet Ertegun. Blunt sings along with acoustic guitar and a piano. Though the song is overplayed, he does a good job with it and showcases his vocals. I like the stage in the middle of the crowd - it's offering some more personal performances.
A commercial of thanks from Prince - didn't see that one coming.
A fan is picked to sing with Justin Timberlake. I had no idea he could play guitar. The winner has a good voice - not sure what the point of this is... He already performed tonight. Too many "I Know"'s in this song. And now he's singing another song... there is a thing as too much. Now he's joined by T.I. Why did he do the earlier performance?
Record of the Year is - Quentin Tarrentino needs to take it easy - The Dixie Chicks. Another big win for the trio.
Posted by jeffhahnedisabled at 9:59 PM
The Grammys - Hour 2
Shakira and Wyclef now performing. It's a new version of "Hips Don't Lie" - Wyclef on acoustic guitar to begin with, then it picked up. Shakira's hips going crazy. A team of dancers join in for an active performance.
As they talk about Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, I wonder what, if anything, they'll do to remember James Brown.
Song of the Year is "Not Ready To Make Nice." Wow - a mild surprise there.
The Grateful Dead win a much-deserved Grammy for Lifetime Achievement.
Gnarls Barkley performance - with both Cee Lo and Danger Mouse in pilot uniforms. It's a toned-down version to start out with an orchestra and a large group of backup singers dressed as flight attendants backing them up. I prefer the sped-up normal version.
Best Rap Album goes to Ludacris. I was surprised by Pharrell's nomination as the album got bad reviews. The category was weak this year - I thought it was between Luda and T.I. Good to see Ludacris get recognized. Funny that he gave a shout-out to Oprah and Bill O'Reilly.
Mary J. Blige performs. It's a good song with a solid vocal, but I've never understood what causes people to say she's so amazing. I think she's lumped together with Beyonce and other R&B vocalists that have some pop appeal. I don't see a unique quality that makes her stand out. That's not saying she can't sing - I just don't see her as "above and beyond." the song did have a powerful ending though...
LeAnn Rimes has some interesting veneers... I'll leave it at that.
The Country Album of the Year goes to The Dixie Chicks. It's good to see that all the controversy didn't impact the awards. Funny that they won for Best Country when a lot of country stations shunned them. Kudos to Maines for working in a reference to "The Simpsons."
Carrie Underwood performing - and it's straight country. She has an effortless singing voice. Rascal Flatts are now singing "Hotel California." Yikes. I'm not liking this version... The singer is also doing a weak air guitar... Next up is "Desperado" by Underwood. She did it well. Why is she singing two songs? Hmm...Rascal Flatts again singing a bad version of "Life in the Fast Lane." They're joined by Underwood who isn't really helping... I guess I'm not a fan of country versions of rock songs.

The Grammys - Hour 1
The Grammys are kicking off - and the reunited Police are playing "Roxanne" to start it.
The band sounds great, and all members look like they're having a great time.
Tony Bennet and Stevie Wonder just won a grammy - nice to see two deserving legends being honored.
The Dixie Chicks are now performing. Natalie Maines looks good as a brunette - though the band is dressed in surprisingly formal attire. The band sounds good playing "Not Ready to Make Nice."
The formal outfits on The Dixie Chicks makes me think - this is the premiere music awards ceremony, so why don't they have more fun with it a la MTV awards.
They just showed that Gnarles Barkley won for Alternative Music Album - Crazy!
John Mayer and Christina Aguilera each won for pop vocal performances.
Beyonce's performance begins. I have to admit - I'm not a big fan... Her voice sounds shaky, but I guess it's just vibrato. She's got a good voice, but not my style.
Carrie Underwood wins a Grammy - shows that the Idols continue their success.
I wonder why there aren't more awards given out - as far as a lot of awards being handed out outside of the televised ceremony.
And the best R&B album is - Mary J. Blige, "The Breakthrough." She was bound to win with all of her nominations. Wow - she's naming everyone she's ever met...
Someone will win a chance to sing with Justin Timberlake - why do we care? Celebrate the artist, not a contest winner...not at this show.
Is it just me, or are a lot of the commercials more music-based tonight?
Justin Timberlake - says the song is written about a "friend." ummm, sure. JT is playing the piano with a large backing band and four backup singers...sounds good, though I'm not a fan of his. The closeup camera angle is kinda freaking me out....there is such a thing as too close.
The Doors win a much-deserved lifetime Grammy.
The winner for Female R&B Vocal Performance is....Mary J. Blige again. I'd say she's on her way to a big night. Hopefully, her speech is shorter this time.
The Flaming Lips won a Grammy...as the brief winners list on the bottom of the screen rolls on. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have also picked up three awards, and the Dixie Chicks have won one.
Rick Rubin won his first Grammy after five nominations for producer of the year.
Corrine Bailey Rae performing with John Legend and John Mayer... Rae sounds great - solo with an acoustic guitar. Mayer now comes in for a little solo work over her singing... now Legend is playing piano with her. A nice soulful song that is showcasing her vocal talent. Legend is now singing solo. Mayer and Rae join in for the chorus. Now it's Mayer's turn for a nice bluesy song. His faces while he plays/sings always crack me up. A nice trio of performances.
Best Pop Vocal Album winner is...John Mayer. Wow - that's a surprise, considering he was up against Aguilera and Timberlake.

February 10, 2007CD Review: Incubus "Light Grenades"

Release date: Nov. 28, 2006
13 tracks; 47:44
It's not easy to describe a band when they don't fall into simple categories.
Incubus has always been that way for me. From their debut EP, "Enjoy Incubus" to their last, and most disappointing album, "A Crow Left of The Murder," the band has wandered through a number of genres - nu metal, funk, punk, pop rock, etc.
When I first heard the band back in 1997 with their debut EP, I was instantly blown away. They combined forces of music through various genres and knocked the doors off everything a music fan was familiar with.
They continued getting better from there, but slowly started a decline after the release of 2001's "Morning View."
"A Crow" failed to hit the right notes or create anything memorable.
Unfortunately, "Light Grenades" is following suit.
While it's a step up from "A Crow," it doesn't quite match the magic of their earlier albums.
The first single, "Anna-Molly," aims for commercial success, but the silly name takes away from its bite.
There are some highlights on the album, but I expected more from a band that has given so much.

February 8, 2007Do we need another boy band?
So, Britney Spears is sitting on the sidelines writing new music (or maybe just looking for underwear), Justin Timberlake is busy bringing sexy back and Lindsay Lohan is in rehab.
Yep....sounds like the perfect time for a new boy band.
Taking a hint from Audioslave, Velvet Revolver and Army of Anyone, VH1 is now putting together a supergroup of their own...of former boy band stars.
I wish I was kidding.
Chris Kirkpatrick of NSYNC will team up with Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees, Bryan Abrams of Color Me Badd and Rich Cronin of LFO.
Now... All the ladies in the house say, "Who?" or maybe "Who would buy this garbage?"
Oh, and the funniest part - the name of the show: "Man Band."
Again - not kidding.

Why didn't Prince get fried?
"This is what is smells like, when doves fry...."
I could see the headlines now - Prince electrocuted during Super Bowl halftime show.
It was a question on a lot of people's minds - why didn't Prince get electrocuted?
Well, you can find the answer here.

February 7, 2007Prices can't get any lower than this!
With many concert goers complaining of ticket prices these days, the organizers of Ozzfest have come up with a brilliant idea - free tickets.
That's right, tickets for Ozzfest this year - which will actually be headlined by Ozzy Osbourne - will be free.
The distribution method hasn't been decided, according to Billboard.com, but they plan on making all tickets free.
Considering that the show in Raleigh last year was about half-full, this is a sure way to put some butts in the seats.
It'll be interesting to see who else is on the roster, and how they'll get the tickets out.
Stay tuned...

February 6, 2007This week's new releases (2/6)
Here's a look at some of this week's new releases:
Barenaked Ladies "Barenaked Ladies Are Men" - Probably would have been an appropriate title for their first album. Then again, who even knew they were still making records?
Belinda Carlisle "Voila" - The "What year is this?" album of the week.
Tanya Donnelly "Whisky Tango Ghosts" - Good to see she's still making new music.
Fall Out Boy "Infinity On High" - Catchy emo rock... get it while it's hot.
As always, the bands with animal-related names releasing albums this week are: Chicken Shack, Deerhunter, Dear & The Headlights, Teddybears, White Mice
