So, here's the deal - every week, the judges talk about song choice, but no one seems to get it.
Note to "American Idol" contestants: Think back on past years. What do you remember? Chris Daughtry singing "Walk the Line" or "What a Wonderful World"? Katherine McPhee singing "Over the Rainbow"?
Why do you remember those songs? Because of good song choice, originality and a fantastic overall performance.
Keep that in mind before you sing these fluffy or random songs that no one will remember one hour later let alone a season later.
That being said, here are my thoughts on the guys' performances - which were better than week one, for some:
Phil Stacey - Apparently, he didn't get the message about singing a good song. There was no spark to his performance.
Jared Cotter - It's tough to tackle Marvin Gaye, but he did ok with it. I thought it showed power, range and soul and he looked comfortable singing it.
AJ Tabaldo - Smooth vocals, but I have no idea what the song was. Again, not a memorable performance.
Sanjaya Malakar - Sounded like he was forgetting words. His vocals were weak and off-key. He should try a Michael Jackson song with that tone.
Chris Sligh - Has a good tone to his voice, but he was kind of mumbling. He has pretty effortless range and power and should sail through this round.
Nick Pedro - The raspy vocals kind of worked and it had a good jazzy feel. It wasn't risky, but it was a solid performance.
Blake Lewis - Didn't have the right tone for the song, but was ok with the falsetto...just ok. His beatbox/scatting was the only highlight - but is that really singing?
Brandon Rogers - Another wrong key and odd song choice. He tried to make it his own, but it didn't work.
Chris Richardson - He was rapping more than singing, but it worked for a more modern-day vibe. It was an odd song to dedicate to his grandma, but it worked. Finally, someone unique.
Sundance Head - This is the best he's sounded since the first auditions.
At the bottom: Phil Stacey, Sanjaya Malakar, Brandon Rogers
