Cobb concedes

Britt Cobb finally did the right thing and conceded the election. Congratulations to Steve Troxler, a Browns Summit farmer and the new commissioner of agriculture.

Troxler would have been installed as the legitimate winner sooner or later. Cobb simply decided not to drag out the process any longer. I commend him for that.

Britt Cobb should not be commended for anything he did from 11/02/04 until today. He knew he lost, the entire state knew he lost. He was willing to drag the entire process out for three months and almost ended up causing the state to waste millions of valuable tax dollars on a senseless new election. Anybody with half a brain realized that no matter how long this mess dragged on, Steve Troxler would eventually be elected.
The only thing Britt Cobb did today was concede the election and end the pissing contest! He shouldn't be commended for that. He should be ashamed that he wasn't man enough to concede it three months ago.

While I was diasappointed by both of the most recent presidential election outcomes, I do feel like Al Gore and John Kerry did the best thing by conceding within a reasonable amount of time and not dragging things out.

I almost look at it like sports.

If a team loses a game at the last minute and blames the loss on a bad call, I always feel like the team should simply accept that they had an infinite number of earlier opportunties to ensure that the game did not come down to one last play. Teams that do not accept defeat graciously deserve little or no respect.

Politicians (and their supporters) should look at the game of politics the same way. Al Gore and John Kerry had their chances to figure out ways to defeat George W. Bush. Both failed to acheive that (at least by the standards we use to determine presidential winners). While we should be furious if we ever learn of intentional vote-tampering, and while we should do everything humanly possible to guarantee that no mistakes are ever made in counting votes, we should understand and even accept that mistakes are probably made, just as no sports contest is ever perfectly officiated. If a politican does not figure out a way to guarantee that an election is not close, then that politician should accept the possiblity that he or she might end up on the short end of the stick. And a politician under those circumstances should accept the outcome.

I will have to agree with Jim Russell about Britt Cobb.

I feel the same way about Trudy Wade.
