Play clean
Alamance-Burlington School System, which made news last year by allowing undercover drug operations on its campuses, is considering a different approach now:
random drug tests for high school students who participate in athletics and all other extracurricular activities.
The Board of Education may adopt the policy March 21. Chairman Tom Manning and Vice Chairwoman Brenda Foster both told me today they're in favor.
You can read more at the system's Web site.
The first time a student tests positive for a prohibited substance, he or she will be suspended from extracurricular activities for three months. Even then, reinstatement depends on successful completion of a drug counseling or treatment program. The second positive tests gets a year's suspension; the third means the student can't participate for the rest of his or her high school career.
We'll be editorializing on this issue soon. We'd like to know your opinion up front.
