--I disagree Doug.

It doesn't matter how down and out this young man's past has been. He is intelligent enough to wake each day, get dressed and go to school. He is also intelligent enough to know right from wrong. This is EXACTLY where adults are going wrong today. We cannot wipe the butts and noses of these kids forever. He's an ADULT and there is NO excuse. Let me share this:

I WAS "DRUGGED"

The other day, someone at a store in a small town read that a methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question, "Why didn't we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?"

"I did have a drug problem when I wuz a kid growing up on the farm." I had a drug problem when I was young:
I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather.

I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in
everything that was asked of me.

I was drug to the kitchen sink if I uttered a profane four-letter word. ( I do know what Lye soap tastes like.)

I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden and flowerbeds and cockleburs out of dad's fields.

I was drug to the homes of Family, Friends, and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one, to mow the yard, repair the clothesline or chop some fire wood, and if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the wood shed.

Those drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack or heroin, and if today's children had this kind of drug problem, America might be a better place today.

I understand the anger, and I appreciate the "drug" story. That was more or less how my wife and I tried to raise our sons - and thank the Lord they have grown up to be fine young men (in my not-so-objective opinion).

Unfortunately, some kids are "drug" in the wrong direction or left to drift, often in dangerous currents. That's a waste, and something to be lamented.

I am one of those hated bleeding heart liberals many of you curl your lip, roll your eyes and wrinkle your nose (as if smelling something unpleasant) when you speak of "my type". Therefore, I am sure my take on this will surprise you. While I agree this is a sad situation, it is no justification or excuse for what this young MAN did.

A child learns right from wrong by the age of six, if not before. If it is not taught at home (and according to Mr. Moore's family it was) by loving parents (or parent), it is taught (in the form of acceptable and unacceptable behavior) by society when a child starts to school.

It is apparent Mr. Moore knew his behavior was wrong or he would not have offered an apology. He chose to ignore the wrongness of his behavior. Now it is time he learned about personal responsibility, ie, all actions have consequences.

While I am not advocating locking him up and forgetting him, I am suggesting it is long past time society quit taking the blame for every sad case out there and start demanding some personal accountability from these offenders.

I realize many offenders are living what they are taught: Blame everyone else for your problems. Too many parents do not teach personal responsibility. It is always a teacher's fault or a neighbor's fault or a friend's fault when their child does wrong. This, in my opinion, still does not excuse Mr. Moore. He is well into the age of personal accountability.

Dumb, that's what it is, just plain dumb. Do criminals know what they do is wrong? Sure they do. Do they know they can go to jail? Of course they do. And sometimes the kids raised under the best parents in the world do the dumbest crimes you've ever heard of.

I can probably show you 50 guys that I grew up with right here in east Greensboro who all had strict parents who were just as quick to tan their hides as my parents were quick to tan mine. Some of them had stricter parents but they went to prison and I didn't. Why? Because they were just plain dumb, that's why.

Here's the deal: I don't care if you beat your kids (beat meaning corporal punishment, not abuse) or use some new age touchy-feely way of keeping them in line (both styles work about the same) if you're not engaging their minds then they'll get in trouble. Children aren't born dumb, they're raised that way. The best parents in the world will always fail if they're unable to engage the minds of their children.

My question: How did a 16 year old manage to have the time to get into so much trouble? Did no one know where he was?

THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE BUT UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN SITTING BEHIND A BIG 'OL DOOR NOT KNOWING IF YOU'LL EVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY AGAIN, DONT TALK ABOUT STUFF YOU NOTHING ABOUT. THE PROBLEM IS THAT WE LOCK TO MANY PEOPLE UP AND FORGET ABOUT THEM. THESE MEN AND WOMEN ARE MOTHERS, FATHERS, SONS, DAUGHTERS, BROTHERS, AND SISTERS. TO YOU THEY MAY JUST BE A STATISTIC, BUT TO ME AND MILLIONS OF OTHER COMMON PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE MISTAKES THEY ARE GOD'S CHILDREN JUST AS WELL

Tony, your record indicates you made further mistakes last year and are currently on probation. I hope you follow the terms of probation and keep yourself out of any more trouble.
