The fast and the furious

I hate the plan to replace Yankee Stadium.

I attended my first Major League game there in the early 1960s and fell in love with the Bronx Bombers and the House That Ruth Built.

Sure, $800 million might buy a pretty nice ballpark, but what's the cost of abandoning a structure where countless fans watched the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra, Mantle, Maris, Ford, Jackson, Munson, Mattingly, Jeter and Rodriguez perform, the scene of so much baseball history?

The main complaint about Yankee Stadium was always its location way up in the Bronx. So it doesn't even make sense to construct a new stadium in the same neighborhood. Leave it alone!

There's a new 100-meter world record-holder, Asafa Powell of Jamaica. He clocked 9.77 seconds in Athens yesterday, bettering American Tim Montgomery's mark by 0.01.

The 100-meter champ typically claims the title of "world's fastest man." But that's not really true. The greatest sprint performance ever was American Michael Johnson's 200-meter world record in the 1996 Olympics: 19.32 seconds.

That comes to an average of 9.66 seconds for each 100 meters. Actually, he was clocked at 9.20 for the second 100. Smoking!

Maybe the new one can be the house that Giambi built...

Really a shame. We'll have to make a trip before it closes down. I wouldn't minda swinging by Fenway and Cooperstown as well. Think the Kia can handle it?

Doug said:

The house that Giambi built? You can't build a stadium with steroids.

As far as visiting Yankee Stadium, your mother came up with the same idea this morning. But hers was: We can go to a Broadway play ... and you can see a ballgame while we're there.

You and your crew went on the cheap. That's NOT what your mother has in mind.

This makes 3 new pro stadiums NYC is considering or proposing simultaneously-- the West Side stadium, and the replacements for Yankee and Shea Stadiums. While some of this may be Olympics-inspired, does this not seem to be a bit much? At least they are not all 100% taxpayer financed.

Doug said:

It seems like more than a bit much, Joe, even for New York. And what if they don't get the Olympics?

By the way, like you, I listened to Cousin Brucie and other DJ's on WABC as a kid -- except during baseball season. Then I tuned my transistor radio to WPIX, stuck it under my pillow at bedtime so my parents wouldn't hear it and listened to Jerry Coleman and Phil Rizzutto calling the Yankees games.

I never, ever, listened to the Mets.

Joe Guarino said:

Holy cow, there was never any doubt which team Rizzuto was pulling for when he called the games. And he was fun to listen to.

You are forgiven for refraining from listening to the Mets. Somehow, I doubt many will mourn the loss of Shea Stadium in the same way that you (and many others, I am sure) are in the case of Yankee Stadium.
