Secret union ballot serves workers best
The work force at Thomas Built Buses in High Point is heading for a union vote.
This time it's going to be done right -- by secret ballot.
As Sue's story linked above reports, the UAW was successful in a "card-check" process last year, but the results were challenged and eventually abandoned.
Now, union organizers say their petitions have been signed by more than half of the plant's eligible employees.
So, signs point to a major victory by the UAW in a city where unions have never been welcomed? I wouldn't count on it.
Employees who might feel pressured to sign a petition could vote no on a secret ballot. That was the problem with the card-check exercise. Unions prefer that method of gaining support, not surprisingly because they do much better when everyone knows who signs and who doesn't than they do in secret-ballot elections.
The secret ballot is the best way to determine whether most TBB workers want the UAW to represent their interests.

I know there's a lot of people who want this election, but I have to wonder if those same people will be comfortable knowing how the workers feel when the results become public record. What if it turns out that the vast majority of workers for the city's fourth largest employer want unionization? I don't know if that will jibe well with North Carolina's reputation.
I know we live in a free and open society, but even still, there are many votes we're not privy to when it comes to business decisions.

High Point business leaders will hold their breath over this one. They're afraid a victory by the UAW will scare off companies that prefer to locate in a non-union environment.
There's some sense of betrayal, too. Local and state governments provided $14 million in incentives for Thomas to build its new assembly plant in High Point rather than South Carolina. There might have been a little less enthusiasm for that if anyone had known the UAW might get it.
My own view on that point is that, UAW or not, TBB is still a tremendous asset which High Point could not afford to lose.

Thank goodness they are holding a secret ballot! Maybe "no" will mean NO this time. Some of the people who work there are so very tired of having to fight the union year after year.
