"Angry Wind"
I concur with this review of "Angry Wind: Through Muslim Black Africa by Truck, Bus, Boat and Camel" by Jeffrey Tayler.
This is a fascinating book about a North African expanse where few Americans visit, or would care to. But the author, a one-time Peace Corps volunteer and experienced traveler and linguist, describes his journey in such intimate detail that you can just about feel the Saharan dust blowing up your nose and into your eyes and ears.
"Angry Wind" introduces readers to this harsh environment and the amazing people who manage to survive there. Throw in Tayler's easy-to-digest history lessons, view of religious and cultural conflicts and his assessment of future challenges in the region, and you're got a book that ought to be read by anyone who wants to fill in a knowledge gap about a region that isn't as obscure or unimportant as you might think.
