High gas prices aren't the worst tragedy at the moment
Please, don't send me any more of those email petitions to the White House demanding that President Bush cut the price of gasoline.
The president doesn't set the price of gasoline, and except for releasing some crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, he doesn't have much influence over supply.
Besides, we've just had a natural disaster of almost incomprehensible dimensions. It has severely disrupted production and distribution of oil/gasoline and natural gas.
More importantly, it's taken a devastating toll in human terms.
Yes, I just paid $3.35 per gallon for gas this morning. Next week, I may ride the PART bus a couple of days. This is a hardship for all of us, and it will crimp our economy.
But I still paid a lot more for gas in Canada back in July ($1.10 Canadian per liter, or somewhere around $4 a gallon U.S.), and the Canadians seem to handle it OK. Our prices probably won't get that high and may very well recede within a few weeks.
In the meantime, we do have a supply problem. High prices actually will help that, particularly if they encourage foreign refiners to sell us gasoline. Slapping on price controls would be the worst response, guaranteed to exacerbate shortages.
But let's try not to burn what we have wastefully. Maybe you DON'T have to go to the beach or mountains this weekend.
And kill that stupid petition that's going around.

I have 2 jobs- delivering papers and a sales job in Clemmons. I wish I could do something... by the way- speaking of outrage, michaelscornerblog mocks and belittles Revelutionary War hero Peter Francisco.
"While walking through Battleground Park yesterday, my wife overheard a young father reading aloud to his four-year-old from one of the monuments. The plaque read something like:
This monument commemorates Peter Francisco who single handedly killed 11 soldiers with his saber making him the most famous private soldier of the Revolutionary War.
The father never quite finished reading the quote as he began to falter at the number ‘11′ and trailed off after that.
Odd that we would honor a mass killer with a huge phallus in the middle of the park. Too bad there isn’t the equivalent monument to someone who cared for the wounded or the broken hearted, or the poor soldier who committed these acts who probably later suffered from PTSD.
But then, have you ever seen a statue that looked like a huge vagina?"

Mr. Christspeak:
I feel your pain with driving to Clemmons each day. However, I don't understand someone who is confused about a statue of a man from the 1770s who killed people in war with a sword.
Would you prefer he invited the British to tea as they gleefully gunned him down a la the Boston Massacre.
I can't stomach modern weakness judging the valor of those who came before us.
Just last night I was thinking on the men who stormed Normandy in the face of Hitler's fortress. How could a man summon up the bravery to do such a thing? It had to be love of liberty and inspiration to defend his way of life.
That's what the Continental Army fought for. That's why there is a statue at Guilford Courthouse.

I am really amazed that we as a society don't have a greater understanding of how our economy works. People don't understand the basics of supply and demand. Without an understanding of economics, you really can't understand what's going on in the world today. I can't imagine why economics doesn't get taught in our schools. It is so vital to who we are as a nation.

My apologies to Christspeak. I should pay more attention to the posts I am commenting on.

Yeah, I tend to believe that a basic misunderstanding of economics is responsible for why people think they're getting gouged for gas. Gas is not a big ticket item for convenience stores and they have to anticipate price changes in advance or they'd start losing money. Bush or rich texas oil buddies an easy answer to lean on, but it's not realistic. He's just an easy target. This is a hurricane related hike, in my opinion, not a conspiracy by greedy oil barons in hot dry Texas towns who run around in cowboy hats scheming like a James Bond villian.
But I will say, if you bought an escalade or hummer recently, you really shot yourself in the foot and should be kicking yourself for your dumb fool move.

"Gas is not a big ticket item for convenience stores and they have to anticipate price changes in advance or they'd start losing money."
Gas is the very purpose of most of these convenience stores, the junk food they sell on the side is icing on the cake. The argument that they have to anticipate price changes is totally false. They have bought x number of gallons of gas that is in the ground for let us say, 3.00 a gallon and they normally sell it for 3.25 per gallon, which is pretty typical of the increase from buy to sell. Now if they" anticipate " as you say and sell for 6.00 a gallon, that is not aticipation, that is gouging and they should be shut down. When the next truck arrives and they charge you 5.00 a gallon then you raise your prices accordingly. It happened in Georgia yesterday when several stations raised prices to over 5 and 6 dollars per gallon. The Governor of the state, shut them down. Thankfully it was only a few of the greedy one's who attempted such a highway robbery move. The remaining stations stayed in the 3.00 range and some a few cents less.

Any way that we can save a little bit of money on gas is great. I don't know if any states dropped the sales tax on gas yet. Last night on the news I heard about a website that is mapping the cheapest gas stations. www.mapgasprices.com
