"In God We Trust"

The national motto is safe on Davidson County's government building.

Thank ... goodness.

The U.S. Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling that found no offense in the words "In God We Trust" placed prominently on the outside of the county building in Lexington.

Very sensible. The national motto can't be unconstitutional, for heaven's sake.

I never understood what was so bad about the original motto. "E pluribus unum" -- "From many, one" -- speaks to the whole idea of America, to me, anyway.

Hey, don't lump me in with the huddled masses.

Why, aren't you yearning to breathe free, too? :-)

Just to be certain I understand this particular thread, Doug & Lex, you two are complaining that Davidson county was allowed to mention the G-word? Why is it that students are required to read the Qaran down at Chapel Hill, but we have the PC gestapo threatening us with lawsuits for saying Merry Christmas, insted of the requisite Happy Holidays? (Which, by the way, shows an ignorance of the English language... look at Holiday and see if you can tell it's roots.... Oops, now that word will be banned too!)

By the way, an edit feature in these threads would be nice, I'm not nearly so bad at spelling as it would appear. Guess I need to use the preview feature a bit more.

Doug said:

I'm not saying that at all, Ted, and I don't think Lex is. I'm fine with "In God We Trust" on the county building in Lexington -- and with the Ten Commandments in the Guilford County Courthouse.

Ted Harris said:

I misunderstood, I thought you were being a bit tongue in cheek. Did our National motto officially change though? I know "In God We Trust" is a slogan that's popular, but last I checked, E Pluribus Unum was still on my money too.

Ted Harris said:

According to Wikipedia, which granted struggles with accuracy issues from time to time, they're both official mottos.
