Those biased endorsements
I have to laugh whenever a read a letter to the editor that says, "Your editorial endorsement of ... really shows your bias."
And then goes on to endorse the other candidate.
OK, our opinion is biased, and yours is, what? The TRUTH?
In reality, an opinion is an opinion. Our editorial board forms opinions on which candidates we think are best qualified for the offices up for election. We try to offer informed opinions, even sitting down for face-to-face interviews with candidates.
We're not telling people how to vote, and we don't expect that every candidate we endorse will win. However, most of the time voters draw the same conclusions we do -- not necessarily because of our endorsements but probably because we actually share many of the same values and goals for the community with most of our readers.
Is that a bias? It seems to me it's more like citizenship.

You may want to endorse this man. Sounds like the kind the NR likes.
Dan Printz Caswell County
From the Danville R@B. quote
Mr Printz, the thing I am most proud of in my term,we had the gateway signs built. Now we know where Yanceyville is ?????
Asked why the voters should reelect him?? Printz I am not the best canidate, but I do live in Yanceyville!!!!!! Advice to Printz from the Dawg, do not talk to real newspapers, they print what you say, not what they want the voters to read. Will the guy when, yes is tax and spend man.

And what a citizen you are, Doug.
How about sharing the letter-to-the-editor in today's paper? Was that YOUR decision or the decision of the "editorial staff" to NOT include certain political letters in today's on-line editorials?--specifically the one about a ward 6 candidate??
Again, another attempt to do the thinking for your community. You abuse your big "editor" position. Is that what you always thought about being when you were little? "The" voice for your community? You make me sick.

What's the old joke, opinions are like a** holes, everyone's got one and everyone thinks everybody elses stinks.

Now Dougie is trying to say that newspapers don't influence people.
Doug, sounds like you would fit well in the Middle East because you continually abuse your power and then try to be all inocent about it.
It is sickening!

You must admit though, Douglas, there is a difference between editorial opinion and deciding to pimp out your papers' editorial space as a juggernaut to further a political issue favored by sitting politicians that clearly is vantage-point dependent(such as the "you know what" plan) which will result clearly in benefit to one group of people (the incumbents and their constituency)at the expense of another group (the group that is not) as was done by both HPE and N&R in reference to the "you know what" plan.

Doug,
In all seriousness - how do you determine which Letters to the Editor to publish online? Noticeably absent is the letter from Milton who endorses Mr. Brown for HP City Council. Is there a reason that you chose not to run this letter? Is it because you favor Mr. Brown's opponent?

Come on Doug. Answer the question.
VOTE BROWN WOOD ON TUESDAY AND STOP THE ABDUCTION OF OUR POOR CHILDREN!

Of course you're entitled to an opinion. And you're even entitled to express that opinion as an official endorsement of a candidate. Now, to be fair, to claim that has no impact on the outcome of an election... well, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and guess that you're being modest. The fact is, I work in a reasonably informed environment, and I know intelligent, educated people that read the newspaper to see which candidate is endorsed and go pull the lever that way. Quite frankly, too many people shrug off local elections because 'they don't have the time to keep up'. Ironically these are probably the elections in which their votes have the most impact.
To everyone else, the 'Dougy' and other personal attacks... the guy is running a website opening himself up to other's views. How about a little respect and a little less of the ad hominem attacks?

Thanks, Ted. Your point about personal attacks points to the reason we have not posted any election-related letters on the blog -- because of the likelihood of anonymous, personal attacks on the candidates.
Sorry for not answering sooner. I'm out of town and this is the first time I've checked my blog this week. The Monday and Tuesday posts were written in advance and set to go online at the designated times.
