The chairman should be elected at-large

Congratulations to Carolyn Coleman, the new chairwoman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.

She's certainly capable and experienced, and I wish her well in the position.

However, I would have voted for Paul Gibson.

The primary reason: He was elected to the board countywide and not from a district.

Gibson won his seat with the votes of 96,554 Guilford County citizens. Coleman won hers with 10,664 votes. By that measure, it's pretty clear who has a better claim to serve as the county's top elected official.

Gibson campaigned all across the county and is accountable to all Guilford County voters. Coleman ran in one district comprising approximately one-ninth of the county's population, and is only accountable to that small portion of the electorate.

I think the chairman of the board always should be someone who was elected at-large, in the same way that the mayor of a city is elected by all the voters of the city.

That's better for the voters, and it's better for the chairman.

If I were chairman, I'd feel a lot more confident having been elected by 96,000 voters than 10,000.

Doug, How dare you speak of such politically incorrect matters. Don't you know that you will be considered biased, a racist, certified member of the "two America's" group, out of the mainsteam, radical right thinking neocon? Surely you don't think that the majority should speak for the majority. Don't you know that it is a handful who should decide what the remainder should do?
Please Doug, enroll in the next Diversity Class offered.

Doug, on the other hand, if you're at-large, that's all the more people you can ignore when you vote your own radical agenda.

Doug said:

I get your sarcasm, mrp, but of course this has nothing to do with anyone's race. It's simply a matter of accountability to the voters.

Savage, if the voters are aware of the candidate's agenda and elect her anyway, what are you going to do?

Skeet Club Savage said:

So true, Doug. So true.

I had heard that studying High Point politics is mandatory reading at Bennett and AT&T and in eastern Greensboro as a whole. I hear they are even considering it for a course option at the colleges, especially in light of the recent Fantasia flap. If you go on campus, I would wager 90% plus of the students could reel off the names of all three High Point schoolboard members at a snap, name all the main thoroughfares in Emerywood, and tell you the mayor's middle name.

I knew you would understand the satire and no Doug I was not pointing at anyones race however you and I both know that there is one infamous indivdual who would play that card in a heart beat over such comments especially if anything was to happen because of them.
From what I remember about Ms. Coleman and from what I have read about her she appears to be a sharp lady with her head screwed on right and I am sure she will do a good job.I think that all should just give her the opportunity to do what she has been positioned to do. If she fails, then she can be replaced next time around. If she succeeds then she can be continued at will.

It's tough to ignore that many voters for a long time Skeet and survive unless of course you have the money or Skippy backing you.

Mr. P,

Your last three words say it all. Skippy the kingmaker rules in Guilford County once again!!! Davis made it one year, Coleman can too (as long as she doesn't cross you know who).

Stormy said:

Doug,

What you and 96,00 voters would prefer is irrelevant. The only thing that is important is what Skippy wants. Skippy rules Guilford County!!!

DOUG,
YOU'RE A RACIST. WHY CAN'T A BLACK FEMALE DO AS GOOD OF A JOB AS A WHITE MALE? IS IT BECAUSE SHE'S BLACK OR BECAUSE SHE'S A FEMALE? IS IT BECAUSE A WHITE MALE WOULD DO A BETTER JOB OF PROTECTING YOUR EMORYWOOD CRONIES THAN THE BLACK CHAIRMAN DID? GIVE ME A BREAK YOU HYPOCRITE!

mrproduce [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

EMONEY, either you are joking or else you cannot read and comprehend anything at all. I beleive that Doug made the comment that Ms Coleman was to be applauded.
You missed the entire point of the editorial but then those who can't read and think usually do.

I am the one who, in jest, wrote the part about Doug being keel hauled by a certain segment of G'boro community(actually one individual) if he were to be against the appointment of Ms. Colman and make a large issue of it.
He simply stated an opinion based actually on what the majority of communities do in these types of situations. The person with the majority of votes is usually selected to serve in the position. There are exceptions as which occured in Asheville several years ago when the person receiveing less than a majority was selected based on experience of the two candidates in question.

Of course other's who can read and can comprehend understood what Doug wrote and what I wrote. They correctly guessed who the "segment of one" on G'boro society, which I refered to,that would be making all the fuss.
As I stated and I feel that Doug and most would agree that Ms. Coleman has a long way to go and that all should hope that for the benefit of the community, she would do a good job.

Now , EMONEY go back and slowly read, word for word what Doug wrote, and what the others have written and when you finally can comprehend the subject, write back, apoligize to all and then make a contribution.
Until then, I suggest anger management classes as well as remedial reading and comprehension.

EMONEY said:

MR VEGETABLE,

aRE YOU SUGGESTING THAT ALL PEOPLE THAT SUPPORT FEMALES AND THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY AND SOMEONE WHO MAY BE BLACK OR FEMALE CAN'T READ BECAUSE OF SAID ETHNIC BACKGROUND OR GENDER? YOU AND DOUGIE DO GOOD WANT TO APPEAR TO HELP BUT ACTUALLY DO NOTHING! CAROLYN WILL DO JUST FINE. WE DON'T NEED A WHITE MALE IN THAT POSITION TO LEAD THE COUNTY!

mrproduce said:

No EMONEY, I am suggesting that only those who can not read and comprehend as evidently you are one will make such idiotic statements and draw such ridiculous conclusions from what has been written.

No where did anyone make a statement against Ms. Coleman, in fact just the opposite and that is why I suggested you take a reading course and learn to comprehend what you read and not just read into something that which you wish to hear. Again I will suggest the same and the anger management class as it seems that you must scream and shout at someone inorder to attempt to make a point. ALL CAPS IS SHOUTING OR SCREAMING!!

So learn to read and leave your biased remarks for those who are so ignorant that they would welcome them.

EMONEY said:

VEGEMAN,
CANNOT IS ONE WORD. WHO'S THE ILLITERATE ONE?

EMONEY said:

MR. VEGE MAN,
AT YOUR SUGGESTION I WENT BACK AND READ THE PRIOR POSTINGS. I NOTICED ONE THING. YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND LEARN HOW TO WRITE. YOU HAVE TOO MANY RUN ON SENTENCES. WERE YOU EDUCATED IN HIGH POINT CITY SCHOOLS?

mrproduce [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

OIC, now you are an grammarian. Typical when you can find nothing wrong in what was said. I do hope you get some help for your anger problem ,it also causes low self-esteem.
And now, you bore me for you offer nothing of substance to this conversation. You cannot refute anything said, nor can you offer any valid argument as to why or why not Mr. Gibson should have been offered the post.
Again I will congradulate Ms. Coleman and wish her all the luck in the world in dealing with the group of clowns that she now has to lead.

mrproduce [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Oh, and one more thing, I didn't say you were illiterate, I said you were ignorant. But given further thought on the matter and your examples of putting forth a rationale argument, I will have to say that your ignorance is only overshadowed by your besottedness.
