This rookie has promise
Here's why North Carolina's 11th District Congressman Charles Taylor is in trouble.
Today is Heath Shuler's 34th birthday.
I predict he'll be sworn in as a member of Congress a few days after he turns 35.
Democrats scored a touchdown when they recruited this young man.
Shuler's football career ended early. His political career could last a long, long time.

Don't hold your breath on this one Doug. I fear Heaths politial career, as far as Congress goes, will be as short lived as his football career.

"I fear Heaths politial career, as far as Congress goes, will be as short lived as his football career."* mr produce
mr produce! You must not know much about the red state zone. At the moment 29 % of the voters in North Carolina have no faith in the Republican Congress in DC. That clearly means Heath is at your 20 yard line and it is first and ten and has a 71 point lead and it not even half time yet! Are you one those dudes that hang around those sport bars, but never place a wager and short tip the Hooter hosts?

No Mack but I live in WNC, and have for many years. I know Charles Taylor on a personal basis and have for many years. I know the voters in WNC probably better than you do and they sure ain't tired of Mr. Taylor. He has done more for the folks in this area than any rookie could ever do. You need something done here, you pick up the phone, call Mr. Taylor's office and bingo you have an answer. If necessary Mr. Taylor will handle the situation himself. That I know for fact.
There have been many better qualified candidates come up against Charles Taylor and lost than Heath will ever be.
Thankfully it is the WNC voters who will decide this.
And no I don't hang around in bars. Perhaps you should take a break from what ever and where ever you are drinking and come to WNC and get a dose of reality.
Taylor goes back, Heath goes to selling off our mountain land to Fla. Yankees.

Mack,
You must have been imbibing heavily early yesterday when you made your post. If 29% of North Carolina voters have no faith in the Republican Congress, then that means that 71% either favor it or have no preference. How does that translate into a 71 point lead for Democrat Heath Shuler? It simply doesn't compute. Perhaps, you are incorrectly associating your candidates with political parties? I further expect that Western North Carolina has a much different political perspective than Greensboro, i.e., red state. George Bush received 56.1% of the 2004 vote. A very solid red state vote.
In any event, if Shuler has the ball on the 20 yard line, his Redskins Football performance would suggest that he just as likely to throw an interception anyway. Listen to Mr. Produce, he knows of what he speaks. He's a "homer" in North Carolina and has first-hand knowledge of the political environment there. Health Shuler has a good personal track record since departing professional football, but he is, after all, a rookie in the world of politics. And, we all know that rookies are usually abused by seasoned veterans in their first foray into any endeavor. Mr. Shuler will likely garner good support as he is a local hero in WNC, but he will likely come up short in this his first foray into politics.

Whistle!!! 15 yards against the Red State Taylor team for having too many votes in the Congressional huddle. First and goal at the Red State five for the Shuler team.

Mack your ignorance is only exceeded by your aggogance and stupidity. You evidently know of nothing of what you speak. I will not waste my time in responding to your ignorant, arrogant racist rants.
You evidently know nothing of Mr Taylor's business or you would know that all the crap you have spluttered is from the farleftwingnut camp, which I am sure you are a solid follower. All has been disproven and no charges have been brought against Mr. Taylor, but then that makes no difference to the farleftnoids like you would are not educated enough to know that , or perhaps should I say want to know that. So in your words, 4th down, you tried to run and fumbled in the end zone. Suckers walk the field.
If you knew anything of WNC you would know that we do not tolerate ignorant aggrogant people. We invite you to depart to whence you came. We can certainly point the way to I-26 and to I-40 if needs be. We also know the way to I-85 I-75. So I suggest you take you arrogance and try it on someone who will cowtow and bow to stupidity.
I trust I will have no need to engage with mindless arrogance again on this board.

Gosh mountain man! I didn't realize that somehow you have controling interest in the N&O and can make decisions on who speaks here. First you tell me to shut up and now you are kicking me out. This certainly makes a great example for republican democracy in action on the internet to others. I am somewhat confuse about your knowledge in professional sports and as a informed citizen on the banking system in Russia. Are you telling me that the good citzens of western North Carolina are informed enough to understand that Congressman Taylor was trading and stashing his investment in a former Communist State with some of them still thinking the Soviet Union State was a powerful force batting the United States for world power at this time? I can see the headlines in some of those small mountian areas without the internet during the campaign.
" Congressman Taylor banking with Communists"
I think you have been watching to much of the new & old release movie " The Longest Yard" Still thinking the guard shot Bert in the back under the Warden's command at the end and won! Good luck on your new sport career as a Warden for the political Guard wingnuts team and the religious prime time preacher cheerleaders who are really big sissies at half time in this political game of life.

I probably shouldn't jump in, but what qualifications does Mr. Shuler bring to a congressional race, other than some celebrity?
If being a mediocre quarterback is all it takes, can we look forward to Rep. Kerry Collins or Sen. Kordell Stewart in the near future?
Posted on January 3, 2006 10:31 AM
Bruce, that's a good question. I was addressing electability more than qualifications.
