O Say, Can You See
A salute to the National Association for Music Education and its National Anthem Project.
My wife is a member, and is incorporating study of "The Star-Bangled Banner" into her middle-school music classes.
What's amazed her is that most students knew nothing about the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key and how he composed the poem that would be put to music and adopted as our National Anthem.
Teaching "The Star-Spangled Banner" is teaching history -- which seems to be a largely neglected subject, at least in elementary and middle school. (No wonder. It's not included on the end-of-grade tests used to evaluate schools under the state's ABCs of Public Education program.)
Kids should learn our National Anthem and its story.
The first verse of the song, anyway. Verses 2, 3 and 4 ... well, it might go beyond patriotism to have to listen to them sung before a ballgame.

Why be amazed. Little history is taught in schools today at any level. What is taught is re-written by revisionist who would make those who settled this country into a group of rapist, murders thieves and thugs. Perhaps I left out money grubbers(todays language) or robberbarons as they were called when I went to school.
War is not taught because it is not a politically correct subject and might injury the delicate minds of children if they were to have to understand that it took blood shed and heart ache to establish this country.
No , I am not surprised that kids no so little about our country.
If they know nothing of the past how will they know how to perform in the future.
Congratulations to your wife for taking the time to teach real history.

I'm all for teaching history, but man, we need a more singable National Anthem. The melody, as you know, is from an old English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven," and you pretty much have to be drunk or a professional singer to make it sound right. Why not "America the Beautiful"?

Yea, you got something there Lex. Lot of folks sure as heck slaughter the NA trying to sing it . Some sound like two cats with their tails tied together and thrown across the close line.

I've found that the level of history and civics can vary greatly from school to school. Usually, it depends on the teachers and principal.
Greensboro Academy, a charter school here in town, makes U.S. history and civics a core subject at every grade level. They have an entire hall dedicated to displaying the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and portraits of U.S. presidents.
Recently, Oak Ridge Elementary invited a local soldier who just returned from Iraq. Students at the school sent him letters while he was stationed overseas.
But on the other hand, the public schools in Madison, Wisconsin, have banned the Pledge of Allegiance and The Star-Spangled Banner. So it really can vary from school to school and town to town.

If you don't think that the current generation doesn't have any sense of modern history, try playing this video for anyone under the age of 25 and see how many they can identify and tell you the significance of them. Unless they are unusal people, the answer is "very little".
Billy Joel (reportedly) wrote this song after overhearing a child say that he felt sorry for "older people" like Billy Joel because no "history" happened in their lifetime, that NOW (or the time the song was written) was going to be the world's most historical time period. The comment got to Billy Joel so much that he sat down and wrote this to prove that his lifetime has been FULL of history.
Of course, this song was written over a decade ago, so it is history in itself.
