Party time?
Somehow, Mardi Gras just doesn't seem like the right thing for New Orleans to do this year.

Doug,
Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
No!!!
It's not over until we say it's over.
Seriously: New Orleans is the most unique city in North America, and most tourists go there simply because it's a party town like no other. Canceling Mardi Gras would be akin to Disney World canceling it's nightly parade. That's what people come for and it keeps the Mouseketeers working, just as the tourists are what provides a livlihood for hundreds of thousands of people in New Orleans.

I see your point, Emery. Still doesn't feel right to me.
Maybe if I were there ...

I think this is the most important Mardi Gras ever.

Doug, It doesn't seem right to us on the outside when there are so many more thintgs those people could spend their limited funds on. But to the residents of New Orleans it was the one and only thing they have control over that means "normal" for them. It is like the security blanket after a nightmare.
