Yes.
One decision does not indicate anything, Doug.

I have lived long enough to see Justices come and go and the pundits have to my knowledge never been right in predicting how they would rule once on the bench. It is all a big political show; fun to watch the posturing if you accept it for what it is.

Most are very predictable. It was forecasted Scalia, Thomas, the late Rehnquist were gonna vote right. Ginsburg and Breyer were gonna go left. Can't recall much about Stephens, Kennedy or O'Connor.
Souter was an exception primarily because Bush 41's admin didn't vet him thoroughly, especially on his philosophy. Bush relied almost entirely on the recommendations of his Chief of Staff Sununu (from New Hampshire)and then Senator Rudman (from New Hampshire) who championed Souter (no surprise, from New Hampshire) to the President.
A lot of the right wing never forgave Bush 41 for this appointment. Claimed he was a traitor to their cause, even though Bush was as surprised as the rest of them when lo and behold, Souter went left in his opinions.
