Bench Barry Bonds
There's nothing shadowy about Barry Bonds' home run surge anymore. Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams expose it all in their upcoming book, "Game of Shadows."
This week's Sports Illustrated carries excerpts.
I was engrossed in it last night.
Almost as appalling as Bonds' blatant cheating with performance-enhancing drugs beginning in 1999 are the accounts of his loathsome behavior toward other people. This guy is a total creep. The idea that he could break the all-time home run record set by classy Hank Aaron is distressing.
Commissioner Bud Selig should suspend Bonds immediately and order a thorough investigation. If the drug allegations are substantiated, Bonds should be kicked out of the game and his records stricken from the books.
Of course, that would leave Mark McGwire's single-season home run mark as best in baseball -- and McGwire may be no cleaner than Bonds.
Next after McGwire is Sammy Sosa -- oops, problem there, too.
Many of the game's recent super sluggers are tainted.
Baseball has got a mess on its hands, but it will only get worse if Bonds continues to play.

Personally, I believe that using steroids to enhance performance is cheating, but baseball didn't have a rule against it until recently. How can baseball enforce a rule that didn't exist?

Barry Bonds has poisoned baseball along with the others who have used PED.
Sosa is almost made from the same cloth as Bonds, only a nicer version. Sosa had some controversy with some of his bat configurations a while back.
When Bud and the group finally admit that Bonds used PED, kick him out.
Roger Maris' HR record should be reinstated.
Baseball is a dying sport and this black eye will help to speed it's demise.

Jason, the commentary by Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published on our sports front today notes that in 1991, Commissioner Fay Vincent sent each team a memo banning the use of steroids. While that was widely ignored, it does give Selig justification to take action against Bonds and others who used steroids after that date.

I'm with you, Doug. Beyond that, I think a latter-day Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis would boost baseball's credibility tremendously. But I doubt the owners would ever allow one to become commissioner.

Is the idea of performance enhancers anything out of the ordinary for Major League Baseball? Hardly. Especially if it wasn't illegal at the time. Do you realize that pitchers sneaked vasoline and threw spitters? That umps called balls and strikes for the catcher and rewarded the catchers with favored calls? That coaches and managers steal signals? That players hit many homers with rubber in their bats? That players like George Brett used pine tar to high on the bat? This idea of gaining an advantage is not only the norm in baseball, it is almost as traditional to baseball as hotdogs, peanuts and beer.
