Expand the sales tax holiday
True, the liberal N&R isn't known for pushing tax relief.
But in our editorial today, we repeated our call, which we initiated last year, for an expanded back-to-school sales tax holiday.
The annual tax break is scheduled this year for Aug. 4-6. It's been very popular in the past, drawing big crowds of shoppers eager to save a few cents per dollar on items ranging from notebooks to school clothes to computers.
We say make it Aug. 4-13, stretching it out over two weekends. Give shoppers more time to take advantage of the break.
With the big budget surplus, the state can afford it. Families need it. Tell your legislators to do it.

"True, the liberal N&R isn't known for pushing tax relief."
Yikes, someone on the editorial board actually admitted that the News-Record is a liberal rag. We all knew it was true, but never thought that someone there would actually admit that it is a member in good standing of the liberal mainstream media.

Don't get me in trouble now.
Seriously, what you read is my opinion. Believe it or not, I've heard people complain the N&R is too conservative.

Sir,
A merchant at Four Seasons mall told me the tax holiday is something of a scam. He said the tax still mustr be paid...by the merchants. They, in turn, cover part or all of that in the price they ask the consumer to pay for the item sold.
There ain't no free ride in the free market.

Correction: that merchant was in a mall in Raleigh/Chapel Hill. My error. Same story otherwise.

Freddy, I have not heard that, nor is there any indication in the sales tax holiday legislation, G.S. 105-164.13C, that merchants are required to pay the tax instead of customers.

I am happy to hear I was misinformed.
