Some thoughts on a Day Without Immigrants
Are any immigrant kids really staying home from school today? Estupido!
I like the Spanish-language version of "The Star-Spangled Banner." (Thanks to Brad and Britt for airing it this morning.)
What day do the rest of us boycott Mexican restaurants?
In Mexico, meanwhile, people aren't going to buy Gringo today. So, what does that do for the Mexicans who sell Gringo?
I'm pretty sure my immigrant grandparents didn't arrive with the attitude that this country needed them more than they needed this country, or that the United States owed them something.
Can I hope that David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez won't be playing for the Red Sox against the Yankees today?
Why do some people say it's racist to oppose illegal immigration? Do they think no one would mind if there were 10 million undocumented Eastern Europeans here?
It's interesting that some immigrants -- Sudanese and Vietnamese come to mind -- don't complain about being here.
If all illegal immigrants here now suddenly were made legal, how many new illegal immigrants would they welcome to come here and compete for their jobs?
Does today's moratorium also mean no one is smuggling drugs across the border? We could stand every day without immigrant drug traffickers.
Finally, is today's boycott really helpful to the cause of immigration liberalization or is it confrontational and antagonistic? I guess we'll know more by day's end.

Doug, you forget that back in the 1840's we ran a "Kearns" on Mexico. WE drummed up some kind of baloney, like California wasn't diverse enough, put the congressional votes together, and Jimmy Polk went and took a couple states from them. People don't forget this kind of stuff.
Now I don't pretend to know the answer to the immigration problem and imagine how weird a place California would be if for the last one hundred and sixty years it was under Mexican control...(wait, a minute, could it be any weirder...)but it might be a little different than your eastern European analogy. Anyway, Mexican's are just taking the entitlement ethos a step farther than the usual b.s. that is business as usual in this country.

I don't know, either, what California would be like today if it had remained part of Mexico all this time. We probably could assume that Arnold Schwarzenegger wouldn't be governor.
I do know that Mexico lost Texas because of all the illegal immigrants from the U.S. who poured in and took over the place.

Very good point, Doug. Were the Texans just grabbing land or were they rebelling against Santa Ana's unreasonable dictatorial demands? Did Santa Ana have a right to dictate to the Texican's? I don't know. Were the Texicans demanding an Enlish language Mexican National Anthem? Maybe there are some history scholars out there who could help.

Well Doug, the world didn't end and the economy didn't collapse. At Lowes the Mexican people were shopping and going about their business. No Mexican owned restaurants were closed but they were laughing at the ignorant one's who put themsleves in the spotlight "por nada".
Wal-Mart parking lot was full of happy Mexican folks rolling baskets full of groceries out to their cars. Many were shopping in anticipation of "Cinco de Mayo" and laughing at those who were boycotting and missing out on the Monday specials. The landscape crews were busy putting the finishing touches on the overpriced houses in the gated subdivisions nearby while the tomato fields were being planted and readied for staking in a week or so.
Looks like the deal fell through here in the mountains and down in Spartanburg/Greenville area. I am sure the PC crowd would have been disappointed and would have castigated those who were working, shopping and supporting their families rather than exposing themselves to possible arrest and deportation.

Unfortunately, David Ortiz did NOT participate in the day without immigrants yesterday. He crashed a huge home run to help beat the Yankees.
Mrp, when is Polk County going to get its own Wal-Mart so you folks don't have to drive all the way down to Spartanburg?
My father-in-law always says he never thought he'd see the day when Columbus had a Mexican restaurant.

Doug,
"I do know that Mexico lost Texas because of all the illegal immigrants from the U.S. who poured in and took over the place."
Perhaps, you should read up on your Texas history. The people that moved into the sparsely settled area were invited by the Mexican government and were offered land grants. They in no way could be considered illegal immigrants because they were invited to immigrate. It was the dictorial regine of Santa Anna that ultimately caused the unrest in Texas to become an outright rebellion.
Actually, if you read the history of Texas independence, it is not that dissimilar to the U.S. battle for independence. In both cases, people were invited to colonize a territory of a foreign government, and when that government became dictatorial, the people rebelled, prevailed and formed their own independent government. So, if the Texans were illegal immigrants, then all of the founding families of the U.S. were illegal immigrants.
And, before anyone says anything about the American Indians, they, too, were also immigrants to this land as they probably migrated across the Bering land bridge form Asia.

And, before anyone says anything about the American Indians, they, too, were also immigrants to this land as they probably migrated across the Bering land bridge form Asia.* Stormy
I just had to say something about Stormy new age Asia immigrantion theory about those indians hustling over the Bering straight to get here.
Stormy! Has it ever occured to you where all of those big indian stone and dirt pyramids came from in both Americans?
And don't tell me they were from a Buddist temple Architect plans in Japan!

Who invited John Wayne, I mean Davy Crockett?

Connie,
What the heck are you talking about? You are incohernt as usual. What do pyramids have to do with people crossing the Berit Strait bridge to become the original inhabitants of North America?

No Doug , we don't want or need a Wal-Mart. Our local IGA is just fine for groceries. Cowan's Hardware or the Ace hardware is good enough for our hardware supplies. Clothes for those looking for bargins can be had at several consignment shops or the local thrift store. Much better quality and lower prices. Columbus may soon cry for one since they are trying to outgrow themselves. With all the new and from what I read overpriced housing coming there the Flordia yankees and yankees, who will be moving there, will soon be demanding the big box stores. How unfortunate.

I'm with you. I'd hate to see it in Columbus.
