A death to celebrate

This is very heartening news from Iraq.

Al-Zarqawi was not only a terrorist mastermind, he was himself a vicious killer who may have personally beheaded helpless captives.

I'm glad he was killed, not captured.

I've already heard lots of spin that al-Zarqawi's death won't have a big impact on the insurgency in Iraq, that he'll be replaced.

We'll see. Of course al-Zarqawi wasn't a one-man show, and he didn't control all the insurgents in Iraq. Terrorist attacks won't stop immediately.

Yet, he was a dangerously charismatic figure fanatically devoted to the cause of jihad. He gave the insurgency much of its ideological force. Without him, maybe it will lose some of its drive, its reason for carrying on. We can only hope.

The death of his international criminal also reminds us that the battle in Iraq really does have something to do with the war against global terrorism. Because we killed al-Zarqawi there, he won't carry out any more attacks anywhere else.

Congratulations to the U.S. and Iraqi forces that brought him down.

Doug,

I am glad to see that you can put this event into proper perspective. Most of the television media is spinning this out of recognition by totally downplaying its importance. CNN and MSNBC are discounting it, but then when I heard the news on Fox News this morning, i knew that the liberal media would treat the news in this manner. They are truly the But Monkeys, as in yeah, but....

I hate to be cynical but I could almost envision the headline: "U.S. forces kill more civilians in Iraq."

Correct Doug. You can count on the lead stories in the NYT , MSNBC webnews to be just that. They will as some Arab news outlets have done, attempt to make a martyr of him.

For me and my family that was some of the best news to date that we have heard concerning Iraq.

Great news. This guy was vermin. I watched the video link Doug provided of the bombing. There's still something that gives me the willies about watching video of guys being blown up. It's SO MUCH like a video game it's scary. You forget that is actually people getting blown up. I can't look at it as being anything more than ultimately de-humanizing and ultimately numbing. Can it really do ANY human beings any good to watch this?

Doug said:

What would you think about the option of sending an assault team in to try to capture him?

John Appel said:

Great news.
I hope the war will be shortened by Zarqawi's demise.

Skeet Club Savage said:

I don't disagree with what they did. They probably wouldn't have got anywhere near the guy with an assult team and the collateral damage would probably have been just as great. I just question the need for the military to release the video to the public at all. (i presume the video wasn't taken by an independent news source)the video doesn't prove anything one way or the other. It could actually be a video game for all I know. Why release it?

Doug said:

I didn't watch the video. Maybe the military was trying to scare someone with it. If I were in Zarqawa's organization, I'd be worried.
