A vote of confidence in rape case outcome?

I wonder whether Duke President Richard Brodhead's decision to reinstate men's lacrosse means he thinks the players charged with rape are not guilty.

After all, it would be highly embarrassing for the university if, during the team's 2007 season next spring, Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans were convicted of the charges.

They are rich. They are white. They got what they have from legacy, favoritism, bias, moving to exclusive suburbs, and otherwise climbing on the backs of the common people. I say the hell with them, guilty or innocent! No Lacrosse!!!!

Could it be that cooler heads have prevailed in the Duke administration and they now understand "innocent until proven guilty?"
I feel the Duke administration owes them the benefit of the doubt until the case is adjudicated in court.

I think Brodhed probably believes that only three players are facing trial on these charges, and that the rest ought to get another chance to represent the university.

Unlike your previous statements on this, I also think Brodhed was right to suspend the team's season this year as this incident revealed a team's partying was out of control and damaging to the University's reputation. Remember that this incident occurred after the players had been involved in a number of arrests and had elicited lots of complaints from the neighborhood.

I don't think I ever said Duke should have allowed the 2006 season to continue.

It may be reasonable to recognize that not all players were guilty of such bad behavior that they shouldn't get another chance to play. Now there's going to be strict personal and collective accountability, supervised by the president himself. It should make a big difference.

Jeeze Skeet , you got someting against Lacrosse? Lots of poor ole boys play the game where I come from and from places that I have lived. You can't always judge the book by the cover Skeet.

Mr. P., Lacrosse was invented by Indians. But they were rich Long Island Indians from the Southamptonoc tribe. Their forebears made their money on shady land and usury scams and bootlegging fermented corn firewater. For years they kept the other tribes down, and it's time the rest of us got ours!
